Emaciated inhabitants of the impoverished Mayapore village endure a curse from the stolen Sankara Stones. They extend meager hospitality to Indiana Jones, Willie Scott, and Short Round by serving gruel and fruit despite their own hunger, then trot alongside Indy, question him in Hindi, and weep openly as sacred elephants depart to fund the Pankot journey. Their grief-stricken faces and desperate pleas expose Thuggee exploitation, binding their survival to outsiders' intervention and village traditions.
