Gayev is a traumatized Soviet soldier stationed in the ruins of Maidens Point. Reduced to incoherent panic by an invisible predator stalking his camp, he clutches a metal identification tag as proof of survival. His body bears the marks of unseen violence—shaking hands and screams defy rational explanations, speaking to a horror beyond espionage or war. He exists on the fringe of power, unseen and untrusted by his superiors like Sorin, yet becomes an unavoidable witness to unfolding horrors through his fragmentary presence and whispered emblems of dread.
