Woman Constables' Informant

A working-class Londoner with a sharp eye and black humor, she serves as an accidental informant to the constables patrolling the Thames. Her gruff demeanor masks a visceral reaction to the grotesque corpse’s appearance—'make an 'orse sick'—revealing both the brutality of the disappearances and her own shaken state. She occupies the social periphery of policing, neither officer nor suspect, but a witness compelled to speak by the horror of what violence has wrought.
