The Group of Jolly Tars are the hypno-programmed crew of the racing yachts Buccaneer and Enlightenment, their cheerful epithet masking the mechanized precision of their actions. Clad in mismatched and sealed twentieth-century/environmental naval attire beneath pressurized helmets, they act as extensions of their respective ships’ unseen command structures rather than autonomous individuals. Blank expressions and rehearsed movements betray no personal volition, their loyalty directed toward whichever unseen force guides their vessel. Their primary roles are functional—hauling lines, retrieving crew, and enforcing the ships’ rigid hierarchies—but their demeanor reveals no fear or hesitation, only hollow compliance. They embody their ships’ manufactured realities, operating as mindless cogs in systems that value ritual over survival or morality.
