The Ambush

The Doctor and his companions, trapped on the Dalek's planet, must warn a group of approaching Thals about a deadly ambush, risking their own safety to repay a life debt and prevent further bloodshed.

Following their capture by the Daleks, the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan find themselves imprisoned but quickly devise an escape plan. Susan feigns distress to lure a Dalek guard, allowing the others to disable the lift's sensor and temporarily trap the Dalek inside. Their escape is short-lived as the Daleks remotely lock down the lift and begin cutting through the door to their location. Ian becomes stuck as they try to get him into the lift. Knowing that he cannot be moved, he persuades the others to escape without him by promising that they will send it back, sacrificing his safety. They reluctantly agree and reluctantly leave him, though they do send it back almost immediately. However, Ian escapes before the lift gets back and is able to rejoin the others on the surface where they find evidence of the Thals. They soon deduce the Daleks' insidious plan to lure the Thals into a trap under the guise of offering food. The Doctor is reluctant to get involved, but Ian an Barbara insist they must warn the Thals. Ian goes on his own, while the others head back to the ship. As the Thals enter the food storage area, Ian's warning comes too late; Temmosus, the Thal leader, is killed. Ian manages to help Alydon, another Thal, escape the carnage. The episode concludes with Ian and Alydon's meeting, setting the stage for their next move against the Daleks.

Act 1

The episode opens with Barbara and Susan struggling to move Ian, who is stuck in a sink-plunger, as they attempt to escape Dalek custody. Ian quickly figures out how to operate their makeshift transport, leading the group to a guarded lift. Employing a clever ruse, Susan feigns distress, prompting a Dalek guard to push them into the lift. Once inside, the Doctor disables a sensor, trapping the Dalek. However, their escape is short-lived; the Daleks remotely lock down the lift and begin cutting through the door to their location. Ian becomes trapped by a magnetized floor. Recognizing his immobility, he heroically persuades the others to escape without him, promising they will send the lift back. Reluctantly, they ascend, sending the lift back almost immediately. Ian, with mere inches of the door remaining to be cut, manages to free himself and rejoin his companions on the surface. From their vantage point, they discover the petrified jungle and, more critically, spot a human figure—a Thal—approaching. Susan quickly deduces the Daleks' insidious plan: to lure the Thals into a deadly ambush under the guise of offering food and friendship. This revelation shifts their immediate goal from personal escape to a moral imperative to intervene.

Act 2

With the Daleks' treacherous ambush plan exposed, the group faces a moral dilemma. The Doctor expresses reluctance to intervene, arguing that the Thals are not their concern and involvement would jeopardize their own lives. However, Barbara and Susan vehemently insist on warning the Thals, citing their life debt for the anti-radiation drug. Ian, recognizing the danger of involving the entire party, proposes a compromise: he will go alone to warn the Thals, while the others return to the ship. Despite Susan's initial protests, Barbara supports Ian's plan, acknowledging his increased chances of success unburdened by the group. Meanwhile, in the city below, the Thals, led by Temmosus, cautiously approach the Dalek food area. Alydon expresses deep suspicion about the Daleks' sudden offer of help, fearing a trap. Temmosus, however, remains steadfast in his belief in peaceful negotiation, dismissing Alydon's fears as illogical and rooted in hatred. He insists on leading the peaceful delegation, unarmed, convinced this will be the strongest argument against conflict. Unbeknownst to them, four Daleks conceal themselves within the food area, awaiting their arrival. Ian races towards the gateway, while the Doctor, Barbara, and Susan head back, the tension mounting with every step.

Act 3

As Temmosus leads the unsuspecting Thals into the food area, Ian watches from his hiding place, his warning still unheard. Temmosus attempts to initiate peaceful dialogue with the unseen Daleks, expressing the Thals' desire for cooperation and a shared future. He emphasizes their willingness to wait for a response, believing in the power of unarmed diplomacy. However, his words are met with brutal betrayal as the concealed Daleks emerge, surrounding him and his companions. Ian, witnessing the unfolding tragedy, shouts a desperate warning—"No! It's a trap! Get out of here! Run!"—but it comes too late. The Daleks open fire, killing Temmosus instantly. Amidst the chaos, Ian's quick thinking and intervention allow Alydon, another Thal, to escape the immediate carnage. Ian and Alydon meet in the gateway, confirming the horrific ambush and Temmosus's death. Alydon, shaken and bewildered, questions the Daleks' senseless violence. Ian, recognizing the immediate danger, cuts short their discussion, urging Alydon to gather his surviving men and retreat. This pivotal encounter establishes a new, urgent alliance, shifting the narrative from a failed warning to a necessary regrouping for future resistance against the Daleks.
