A Desperate Venture

When the Doctor and Ian go missing while searching for the cause of the Sensorites' woes, Barbara and Susan must use the Sensorites' mind technology and their own cunning to rescue them and expose a traitor within the Sensorite city.

On the Sensorite planet, the Doctor and his companions find themselves embroiled in political intrigue and must uncover the source of the poisoned water to save the Sensorites. Carol is kidnapped by a rogue Sensorite engineer, forcing Barbara, John, and Susan to intervene. The Doctor and Ian venture into the aqueducts to investigate the water supply but find themselves captured by paranoid survivors from a crashed spaceship, who still believe they are at war with the Sensorites.

As Carol is held hostage, she manages to get word to the others about her captivity. Simultaneously, the First Elder reveals that the Doctor and Ian have gone missing. Barbara suspects a Sensorite conspiracy, further fueled by the discovery of a forged letter implicating Carol in the disappearances. The First Elder denies any involvement but allows Susan and Barbara to search for their friends. Using a mind transmitter, Susan guides Barbara and John through the treacherous aqueducts where The Doctor and Ian are being held.

In the tunnels, the Doctor and Ian are caught between the paranoid spaceship survivors, led by a delusional Commander, and must use their wits to navigate the situation. The Commander's mistrust escalates when Barbara and John's presence is detected, leading to a tense standoff. The timely arrival of Barbara and John helps to defuse the situation, but it also exposes the Commander's delusions. The Doctor orchestrates a plan to bring the Commander and his men back to the surface, where they are apprehended by the Sensorites.

Back in the city, the First Elder uncovers the treachery of the Second Elder, who is banished for his role in the conspiracy. Captain Maitland agrees to take the deluded soldiers back to Earth. With the water supply secured and the conspirators dealt with, the Doctor and his companions prepare to depart in the TARDIS, leaving the Sensorites with a newfound understanding of trust and the potential for a brighter future, though Susan expresses a longing to return to her and the Doctor's home planet.

Act 1

Carol, captured by the Administrator and an Engineer, is coerced into writing a deceptive note for John, fabricating a story about going to the spaceship. Her captors reveal the Doctor and Ian's presence in the aqueduct and the party's division, aiming to prevent suspicion regarding Carol's disappearance. Upon receiving the note, Susan, John, and Barbara immediately recognize it as a forgery, identifying Carol's forced handwriting and the timing of its delivery. Barbara, recently returned from the spaceship, suspects a Sensorite power struggle, not a general xenophobic attack. The First Elder arrives, initially evasive about the Doctor and Ian's whereabouts, claiming they requested secrecy. Barbara presents the forged note, forcing the First Elder to confront the possibility of internal treachery. Despite initial denial, the First Elder acknowledges Carol's imprisonment as serious, especially after Susan points out a smudge on the note, indicating its recent creation. He reluctantly admits the disintegrator room, rarely used, is the only other nearby building. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Ian discover their map is tampered with and their weapons rendered useless, leaving them vulnerable in the aqueduct. Carol, still held, learns from the Engineer that her life holds value only as long as she serves their purpose. John attempts a rescue but is caught, and the Engineer threatens Carol with a power lead, leading to a struggle that results in John's recapture by a Senior Warrior. The First Elder, now fully aware of the Engineer's escape and Carol's kidnapping, vows to punish him and identify his accomplice. Barbara further pressures the First Elder, revealing the Doctor and Ian's compromised equipment. She demands action, offering to lead a rescue with Susan if the First Elder provides an authentic map. Recognizing the Doctor's past assistance, the First Elder agrees to help.

Act 2

Deep within the tunnels, the Doctor and Ian discover their "ambushers" are not Sensorites but paranoid survivors from a crashed spaceship. They realize these men are responsible for poisoning the water, though their motive remains unclear. Back in the reception room, Barbara proposes a daring plan: she and John will enter the aqueduct, guided by Susan using a Sensorite mind transmitter. The First Elder grants permission, and Susan demonstrates her natural telepathic abilities, confirming the transmitter's potential. Susan and the First Elder engage in a profound discussion about the nature of trust, with Susan cautioning against blind faith and revealing her longing for their home planet. Barbara and John then embark on their mission, with Susan directing them. They soon discover the Doctor's deliberately crumpled and marked map, confirming the sabotage of their original guidance. This leads them to abandon Susan's direct guidance and instead follow the Doctor's chalk marks, hoping to track his movements. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Ian are formally brought before the Commander of the spaceship survivors, a delusional man who believes he is still fighting a war against the Sensorites. He boasts of his "victory" and claims the planet's resources, revealing his motive for the poisoning. The Commander's warning system detects Barbara and John's approach, immediately escalating his paranoia. He accuses the Doctor and Ian of lying and being Sensorite spies, threatening a court-martial. Barbara and Ian's unexpected reunion further complicates the situation. Thinking quickly, the Doctor improvises a story, presenting Barbara and Ian as part of a "committee" there to celebrate the Commander's "victory" and escort him to the surface. The Commander, eager for recognition, accepts the deception and orders his men to prepare for departure.

Act 3

At the aqueduct entrance, a Sensorite Warrior and guard await the Commander and his men. John, Barbara, Ian, and the ragged survivors emerge first, dropping their makeshift weapons without resistance. The Doctor and the Commander follow, but the Commander quickly realizes the deception, crying "Treachery!" The Warrior, demonstrating remarkable restraint and a commitment to justice over revenge, paralyzes the Commander instead of killing him, reflecting the Sensorites' newfound understanding of ethical conduct. Back in the reception room, the immediate threats are resolved. Ian informs the First Elder that Captain Maitland has agreed to transport the deluded survivors back to Earth, acknowledging their complete insanity and the "game of war" they were playing. The First Elder confirms the Second Elder's treachery, directly linked to the tampered map found by Barbara, and pronounces his banishment to the outer wastes. With the water supply secured and the internal conspiracy dismantled, the Doctor and his companions prepare for their departure. The First Elder expresses gratitude, sealing the lock to their ship. In the TARDIS, Susan reflects on the loss of her telepathic abilities due to the Sense Sphere's frequencies and expresses a deep longing to return to her home planet, a sentiment the Doctor acknowledges but cannot promise. The episode concludes with the Doctor, in a moment of characteristic irascibility, misinterpreting Ian's comment about Maitland's ship knowing its destination as an insult to his own navigation skills. He threatens to leave Ian at their next stop, injecting a final note of personal conflict and uncertainty into their journey.
