Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor skillfully fending off an assassin in a Roman villa, a chaotic confrontation where he uses a lyre, a plant pot, and wine to subdue his attacker before the assailant escapes through a window. Vicki then reveals the Centurion who brought them to the villa has also vanished, prompting the Doctor to deduce the Centurion orchestrated the attack, likely targeting the real Maximus Pettulian, whose identity the Doctor has inadvertently assumed. Despite the clear danger and Vicki's apprehension, the Doctor insists they proceed to Rome, asserting his determination. Concurrently, Barbara endures the harsh realities of slavery in Roman cells, witnessing the despair of a sick fellow prisoner and learning of her own impending sale at auction, a fate that also awaits her companion in the arena. A bald, aristocratic man named Tavius approaches, offering to buy Barbara privately, but she refuses his terms for conditional freedom, and the transaction is blocked by Sevcheria, who insists on a public auction. Meanwhile, Ian and Delos suffer aboard a galley, contemplating escape amidst brutal conditions. Ian's attempt to subdue the Galley Master is thwarted, but the imminent threat of a severe storm offers a desperate glimmer of hope for freedom. This act establishes the immediate perils and the divergent paths of the separated companions, all converging on or within Rome, setting the stage for their individual struggles.

Act 2

Barbara's plight escalates significantly as she is put up for auction in Rome. Tavius, the bald, aristocratic man who previously attempted to buy her privately, outbids all others with an exorbitant sum, securing her purchase. He brings her to Nero's palace, explaining she will serve Poppea, a position that offers a more comfortable existence than general slavery. However, Barbara immediately declares her unwavering intention to escape, highlighting her indomitable spirit despite her new, gilded captivity. Simultaneously, Ian and Delos achieve a hard-won freedom, escaping the sinking galley amidst the chaos of a violent storm at sea. Washed ashore, Delos frees them from their wrist cuffs. Ian, driven by his loyalty and concern for Barbara, insists on heading directly to Rome to find her, overriding Delos's cautious suggestion to go north. This determination, while noble, leads directly to their recapture by two soldiers upon their arrival in the city, immediately thwarting Ian's mission. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Vicki arrive in Rome, assuming the identities of Maximus Pettulian and his child to gain access to the city. They secure an audience with Nero, where the Doctor skillfully bluffs his way through a command to play the lyre, temporarily impressing the Emperor and securing their precarious position within the imperial court. Tavius, upon hearing of Maximus Pettulian's arrival at the palace, exhibits alarm and decides to meet him personally, foreshadowing the impending conflict and danger for the Doctor's elaborate disguise.

Act 3

The narrative intensifies with immediate threats and grim discoveries for both sets of companions. The Doctor and Vicki, having successfully infiltrated Nero's court under the false pretenses of being Maximus Pettulian and his child, explore the apoditarium as Tavius had cryptically mentioned. There, behind a curtain, they discover the brutally murdered body of the real Centurion, whom Vicki immediately identifies as the man who initially brought them to the villa. This chilling discovery confirms the depth of the conspiracy surrounding the identity of Maximus Pettulian and directly implicates their disguise in a murder, placing them in extreme peril within the heart of imperial power. The Doctor, initially dismissive of Vicki's curiosity, now grapples with the grave implications of this finding. Simultaneously, Ian and Delos, having just arrived in Rome with Ian determined to find Barbara, are immediately apprehended by two soldiers on the street. This capture abruptly halts Ian's mission to locate his friend, plunging him back into captivity just as he was on the verge of his search within the vast city. These twin developments leave both sets of companions facing profound, immediate danger and significant obstacles to their respective goals, concluding the episode on a high note of suspense and uncertainty, as their paths become increasingly entangled with the machinations of Nero's Rome.
