The Knight of Jaffa

After Saladin's forces mistakenly capture a knight aligned with King Richard, political tensions escalate, further complicated by a Genoese merchant's machinations, which lead to the abduction of Barbara, prompting Sir Ian to embark on a perilous rescue mission.

In the aftermath of a minor skirmish where Saladin's men capture a knight mistakenly believed to be King Richard, Richard and his court, including the Doctor, Vicki, and Ian, attempt to leverage the situation for propaganda purposes. Richard considers proposals to exchange the captured knight for prisoners, and he entertains the notion of a peace treaty with Saladin, potentially cemented by a marriage between his sister Joanna and Saladin's brother, Saphadin.

Meanwhile, tensions rise as the Genoese merchant, Luigi Ferrigo, seeks an audience with Saladin to secure trade concessions. He becomes entangled with El Akir, an Emir scorned by an English woman named Barbara, who serves as a storyteller for Saladin. El Akir desires revenge and Barbara's capture, and Luigi, seeking favor, betrays Barbara to El Akir.

Back at Richard's palace, Ian is unexpectedly knighted as Sir Ian, Knight of Jaffa, and tasked with delivering a message and gold belt to Saladin, hoping to secure the release of Sir William des Preaux and Barbara, unaware of the treachery that has befallen her. Upon his arrival, Sir Ian discovers Barbara has been kidnapped. Sir William reveals that Luigi engineered her capture as revenge on El Akir's behalf.

As Sir Ian seeks to rescue Barbara, the Doctor and Vicki find themselves embroiled in a misunderstanding involving stolen clothing from the palace, which is eventually resolved. News arrives of El Akir's cruelty to his captives. Determined to rescue Barbara, Sir Ian leaves to confront El Akir, signaling a dangerous confrontation in El Akir's territory, Lydda.

Act 1

King Richard's court navigates the political fallout from Sir William des Preaux's capture by Saladin's forces. De Tornebu, the Doctor, and Vicki suggest leveraging the incident for propaganda, portraying Saladin as fearful. The Doctor proposes a prisoner exchange, a notion Richard, impressed by the Doctor's wit, considers. Princess Joanna's arrival introduces a jewel from Saladin's brother, Saphadin, prompting discussions of a potential peace treaty through a strategic marriage between Joanna and Saphadin. This diplomatic maneuvering sets a complex backdrop. Concurrently, in Saladin's camp, the Genoese merchant Luigi Ferrigo seeks an audience to secure vital trade concessions. He encounters Emir El Akir, a vengeful figure who desires Barbara, an English storyteller who previously scorned him. Luigi, seizing an opportunity for personal gain, agrees to abduct Barbara for El Akir in exchange for his coveted audience. Despite Sheyrah's urgent warnings to Barbara about El Akir's malevolent intentions, Luigi, under the guise of an urgent message from Sir William, successfully deceives Barbara. He leads her from her tent directly into El Akir's waiting grasp at the stables. Barbara's abduction marks a critical escalation, establishing a deeply personal stake within the broader political and military conflict.

Act 2

In Richard's palace, Ian prepares for an unspecified mission, initially finding the elaborate armor ridiculous. The Doctor, however, shrewdly deduces that King Richard intends to dispatch Ian to Saladin. Richard, engrossed in dictating a peace treaty proposal centered on a marriage alliance between Joanna and Saphadin, formally summons Ian. He entrusts Ian with a diplomatic mission: deliver a gold belt to Saladin and secure the release of both Sir William des Preaux and Barbara. Richard reveals his underlying motive for choosing Ian, an outsider, over his inner circle: a genuine desire to halt the incessant bloodshed and forge peace. To imbue Ian with the necessary authority for this sensitive task, Richard performs an impromptu knighting ceremony, dubbing him "Sir Ian, Knight of Jaffa." Simultaneously, a minor but amusing subplot unfolds involving the Doctor and Vicki. They face accusations from the Chamberlain and Daheer regarding stolen clothing. The Doctor, through quick thinking and sharp questioning, exposes Thatcher, a palace guard, as the actual thief who sold the garments. This brief diversion, though resolved, underscores the Doctor's resourcefulness. Ian departs, now bearing a noble title and a weighty, dual mission of diplomacy and personal rescue.

Act 3

The narrative shifts to Saladin's court, where Luigi Ferrigo attempts to negotiate trade concessions with Prince Saphadin. The ongoing discussion about Barbara's mysterious disappearance interrupts these proceedings. Sheyrah, Barbara's attendant, recounts finding a man's glove, which Sir William des Preaux immediately identifies as belonging to Luigi. Confronted with the evidence, Luigi confesses his treachery: he abducted Barbara and delivered her to El Akir, fabricating a story about her supposed passion for the Emir. Sir William vehemently refutes this lie, exposing Luigi's deception. Meanwhile, Barbara, now a captive of El Akir, makes a desperate, though ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to escape outside El Akir's palace, highlighting her immediate and severe peril. Sir Ian arrives at Saladin's court, ready to execute his diplomatic mission. He learns from a distressed Sir William that Barbara has been kidnapped by El Akir, a scheme orchestrated by Luigi. Sir William warns Ian about El Akir's notoriously cruel reputation and the grim likelihood that Barbara is destined for his harem in Lydda, his personal territory. Faced with this stark reality, Ian's mission dramatically shifts from negotiation to an urgent, perilous rescue. He resolves to pursue Barbara into El Akir's dangerous domain, setting the stage for a direct confrontation.
