The Warlords

During the Crusades, Barbara escapes El Akir's clutches with Haroun's help, while Ian faces death by ants before escaping. Meanwhile, the Doctor and company are branded traitors and must escape the clutches of King Richard's men.

Barbara is held captive by El Akir, who intends to punish her for her defiance. El Akir attempts to bribe his guards to recapture Barbara but she escapes to the seraglio, where the women, led by Maimuna, hide her, displaying loyalty against El Akir. Haroun, Maimuna's father, infiltrates the palace to rescue his daughter, and reunites with Maimuna. He kills El Akir when El Akir threatens Maimuna with a sword, then escapes with Barbara, who he learned was also in the palace by his other daughter, Safiya, and Ian with the aid of Ibrahim, who steals horses.

Elsewhere, Ian is staked in the desert, threatened with death by ants by Ibrahim, who seeks to steal his gold. Ian bargains and eventually overpowers Ibrahim. When Ian learns Barbara is El Akir's captive, Ian forces Ibrahim to take him there to save Barabara.

Back in Richard's camp, Vicki's true identity is revealed, leading to accusations of treachery against the Doctor. Leicester tries to expose the Doctor as a traitor, as well as Vicki, but Richard sides with the Doctor because Richard needs Leicester. Richard is having second thoughts about battling Saladin for Jerusalem, but Richard is driven to his goal. Richard lets the Doctor and Vicki go, but Leicester orders his soldiers to follow them. The Doctor and Vicki escape with the help of Ian and Barbara by using the TARDIS. Ian pretends he is going to execute the Doctor for Leicester, allowing the Doctor to distract Leicester and get to the TARDIS.

Act 1

Barbara, a captive of the tyrannical El Akir, defiantly engineers her escape from his chamber, triggering a frantic palace-wide search. She finds an unexpected sanctuary within the seraglio, where Maimuna and the other women, bound by their shared animosity towards El Akir, courageously hide her from his pursuing guards. Concurrently, Ian faces a brutal ordeal in the desert, staked out on the sand by the opportunistic Ibrahim, who intends to use a trail of ants to inflict a slow, agonizing death and extract information about Ian's perceived wealth. Meanwhile, in King Richard's camp, Vicki endures accusations of treachery from the suspicious Leicester, who highlights her use of disguise. The Doctor vigorously defends Vicki, confronting Leicester's bullying tactics. Although Richard acknowledges Leicester's prior betrayal regarding his marriage plans, he strategically dismisses Leicester, prioritizing his military leadership for the impending battle against Saladin. Richard grants the Doctor and Vicki leave, urging them to depart for Acre and subtly conceding the ultimate futility of his campaign to permanently hold Jerusalem. This series of unfolding events establishes the immediate perils for each character group and clearly defines their initial, disparate objectives: Barbara's desperate struggle for survival, Ian's fight for freedom, and the Doctor and Vicki's forced departure from Richard's court.

Act 2

Ian, still tormented by Ibrahim and the approaching ants, eventually outwits and overpowers his captor. He learns of Barbara's capture by El Akir, shifting his immediate goal from mere escape to a determined rescue mission. He coerces Ibrahim into helping him infiltrate El Akir's palace and steal horses for their escape. Within the seraglio, Barbara learns of Maimuna's father, Haroun, and reassures Maimuna of his love, revealing El Akir's lies about his death. This emotional connection strengthens their bond just as Fatima betrays Barbara's hiding place. Haroun, having infiltrated the palace to rescue Maimuna, arrives just as El Akir threatens Maimuna with a sword, killing El Akir in a decisive moment. Haroun reunites with Maimuna and, learning of Barbara's presence from Safiya, facilitates Barbara and Ian's escape from the palace with the stolen horses. This act sees the resolution of the immediate threats from Ibrahim and El Akir, leading to the reunion of Ian and Barbara, and setting their course back to the TARDIS.

Act 3

As the Doctor and Vicki attempt to return to the TARDIS, they find themselves encircled by Leicester's soldiers, who believe them to be traitors heading to Saladin's camp. The Doctor is apprehended, but Ian and Barbara arrive just in time. Ian, leveraging his quick thinking, devises an elaborate ruse: he pretends to be "Sir Ian, Knight of Jaffa," accusing the Doctor of being a Saracen spy responsible for the deaths of his friends. He convinces Leicester to allow him the "honor" of executing the Doctor. The Doctor, playing along, requests one final look at Jaffa, using this as a pretext to walk towards the TARDIS with Ian and Barbara. Once inside, they quickly enter the TARDIS, and it dematerializes just as Leicester and his soldiers realize they have been tricked. Leicester, embarrassed and fearful of being branded a fool, orders his men to keep silent about the impossible event. Safely aboard the TARDIS, the companions share a moment of relief and banter, but the TARDIS unexpectedly goes dark, leaving them in an unknown predicament and setting up a cliffhanger for the next adventure.
