The Dimensions of Time

A time-traveling Doctor and his companions find themselves trapped in an alien museum, where they must evade capture by both the ruling Moroks and a local rebel group while trying to locate their time machine, the TARDIS, before they become exhibits themselves.

The Doctor, along with his companions Ian, Barbara, and Vicki, arrives on the planet Xeros and soon discovers it is a museum showcasing various artifacts and life forms from across the galaxy. They quickly realize that they are in danger of becoming exhibits themselves. As they try to navigate the labyrinthine museum in search of their ship, the TARDIS, they encounter various threats and moral dilemmas.

Their efforts to escape are complicated by the presence of the Moroks, the emotionless rulers of Xeros and curators of the museum. Governer Lobos is alerted to the arrival of the alien visitors and orders their capture, hoping to add them to his collection. A messenger informs Lobos of the arrival of a spaceship, prompting him to alert the commander. Simultaneously, a rebel group, led by Tor and Sita, plots to use the new arrivals to their advantage. The group decides to find the aliens and ask for their help.

The Doctor and his companions move through the museum halls. The Doctor becomes separated from Ian, Barbara, and Vicki, falling into the clutches of the rebels. While they are initially hostile, they intend to sway him to their cause. The Doctor pretends to be unconscious. However, the Doctor manages to outwit his captors and escape, but is then captured by Morok guards. Meanwhile, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki continue their search, employing a makeshift thread to avoid getting lost. The Moroks capture the Tardis and the group sees it at the end of a corridor.

Act 1

The episode opens in Governor Lobos's office on Xeros, a planet serving as a museum for the Morok empire. Lobos, weary and disillusioned with his posting, learns of an unscheduled alien spaceship landing. He immediately orders a search and capture of the 'uninvited visitors,' intending to add them to his museum collection. He dismisses the local rebels as a mere 'rabble' but acknowledges they might attempt to contact the aliens for assistance. Simultaneously, in a hidden Xeron hideout, the rebel leader Tor, along with Sita and Dako, discusses their dire situation: they are unarmed and vulnerable to the Moroks. Tor reveals his knowledge of the alien ship's arrival and proposes a daring plan to intercept the aliens before the Moroks do. He believes these newcomers will possess weapons and, once they hear the rebels' story of oppression, will agree to help their cause, despite Dako and Sita's skepticism about the aliens' potential friendliness or willingness to be found. Meanwhile, the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki are inside the museum, debating their grim future as potential exhibits. Ian discovers a ray gun, prompting a discussion about whether to stay and avoid their predicted fate or actively seek the TARDIS and escape. The Doctor, intrigued by a lost button, ultimately decides they must leave the museum and find their ship, with the others agreeing to the plan.

Act 2

Having decided to leave the museum, the Doctor and his companions immediately become disoriented within its labyrinthine corridors, realizing they are lost. Their attempts to retrace their steps prove futile as all passages appear identical. Unbeknownst to them, the rebel group, led by Tor, observes their movements, noting Ian's possession of a ray gun. Tor devises a strategy to separate one of the aliens from the group, hoping to establish contact and explain their plight. The Doctor, lagging behind his companions, is swiftly pulled through a door and captured by Sita and Dako. He feigns unconsciousness, allowing him to observe his captors and assess their intentions. While Tor and Sita leave to find water to revive him, the Doctor seizes the opportunity, outwitting and binding Dako before making his escape. However, his freedom is short-lived; almost immediately upon leaving the rebel hideout, two Morok guards apprehend him, escalating his peril from one set of captors to another. Separated and increasingly anxious, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki continue their search for the Doctor and the TARDIS. Realizing they are trapped in a circular maze, Ian ingeniously unravels Barbara's cardigan to create a thread, a modern-day Ariadne's thread, hoping to retrace their steps and avoid getting further lost.

Act 3

The Doctor, now a prisoner of the Moroks, finds himself in a cell, strapped into a chair. Governor Lobos appears, revealing his role as curator of the Xeros museum and expressing his weariness with the Morok empire's decline. Lobos attempts to interrogate the Doctor, who initially remains silent. Lobos then activates a mind-reading device integrated into the chair, which projects the Doctor's thoughts onto a monitor. Through this technology, Lobos extracts information about the Doctor's companions – their number, gender, and approximate location within the museum – and promptly dispatches Commander B division to detain them. Meanwhile, the rebel group, still in pursuit of the aliens, discovers the trail of thread left by Ian, Barbara, and Vicki. Tor correctly deduces its purpose, believing it was left for the Doctor to follow, and decides to use it to track the companions, intensifying the multi-party chase. Back in the museum, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki, having followed their thread to what appears to be a dead end, express despair about their situation. However, Ian, with a surge of determination, opens a hidden door, leading them to a shocking discovery: the TARDIS, their time machine, is not only found but is already on display as a captured exhibit within the Morok museum, thus presenting a new, formidable challenge for their escape.
