The Exploding Planet
When the TARDIS lands on a dying planet, the Doctor, Vicki, and Steven must help the peaceful Rills escape before it explodes, while evading the ruthless Drahvins who seek to steal the Rill's ship for their own survival.
The Doctor, Vicki, and Steven arrive on a planet destined for destruction, where they encounter two alien races: the Rills and the Drahvins. The Rills, beings of intelligence and advanced technology, are trapped on the planet and need to escape before it explodes. The Drahvins, a warrior race led by the ruthless Maaga, are determined to seize the Rill's spaceship for themselves.
The Doctor and his companions quickly align themselves with the Rills, offering to help them transfer power from the TARDIS to the Rill ship. This act of kindness is met with suspicion by Steven, who questions the Rills' true motives. Despite his doubts, he assists the Doctor in the power transfer.
Meanwhile, Maaga plots to sabotage the Rills' escape. She sends her soldiers to attack the Chumbleys, the Rill's robotic helpers, and destroy the power cable connecting the TARDIS to the Rill ship. The Drahvins succeed in disabling one Chumbley, but are eventually thwarted by another.
As time runs out, the Doctor and his companions race against the clock to complete the power transfer. They are aided by the Chumbleys, who bravely defend them from the Drahvins. The Doctor is given a tour of the Rill's central chamber and shown the way they look behind the barrier needing a specific atmosphere. The Drahvins launch a final assault on the Rill base, but the Chumbleys repel them with non-lethal force.
With the Rill ship fully charged, the Doctor, Vicki, and Steven bid farewell to their new allies. As the Rill ship launch, the TARDIS departs just moments before the planet explodes, leaving Maaga and the remaining Drahvins to perish. The TARDIS dematerializes, leaving them stranded on the doomed planet. The Doctor, Vicki, and Steven escape, hurtling through space to their next adventure.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The narrative opens with the Doctor, Vicki, and a Chumbley party approaching the Drahvin ship. Steven, held hostage by the Drahvins, is freed when a Chumbley launches an ammonia bomb into the Drahvin vessel, creating a diversion. Outside the ship, the Doctor tends to Steven, who recovers from the gas exposure. The Drahvins emerge, but a Chumbley firmly warns them against further aggression, asserting its resolve to protect its friends and prevent any Drahvin escape. Maaga, undeterred by this setback, retreats into her ship. She immediately plots her next move, ordering a silent attack through a forward hatch to destroy the Rill's "machine" (a Chumbley) and seize their spaceship before the planet's imminent destruction. Meanwhile, the Doctor, Vicki, and Steven reach the Rill central chamber. The Doctor proposes transferring power from the TARDIS to the Rill ship, estimating a three-to-four-hour process. Steven, still suspicious, questions a Chumbley about their intentions, particularly if time runs short. The Chumbley explains their commitment to self-preservation but prioritizes the Doctor's escape due to his values. Steven then reveals the Drahvins' plan to steal the Rill ship, prompting him to offer assistance with the power cable. As the Doctor and Vicki prepare the TARDIS connection, Drahvin 3 departs her ship, armed with an iron bar, to execute Maaga's sabotage plan against the Chumbley guarding the TARDIS. This act establishes the immediate threat, the alliances, and the desperate race against time.

Drahvin 3 executes Maaga's sabotage, destroying the Chumbley guarding the TARDIS with an iron bar. This act of aggression heightens the stakes as the planet's impending explosion draws nearer, now only five hours away. The Doctor and Vicki return to the Rill central chamber, where the critical power transfer from the TARDIS to the Rill ship commences. The estimated three-to-four-hour transfer time creates immediate tension against the less-than-five-hour countdown to the planet's demise. An emergency message confirms the destruction of the Chumbley outside the Drahvin ship, alerting the Doctor's party to the Drahvins' renewed hostility. Maaga, now emboldened, announces her intention to launch a direct assault on the Rill spaceship. Steven voices concerns about the Drahvins targeting the power cable, but a Chumbley reassures him of their preparedness. As the power transfer continues, requiring another two hours, a Drahvin infiltrator attempts to attack Steven. A Chumbley swiftly intervenes, paralyzing the Drahvin and preventing further immediate harm. The Doctor then invites Steven and Vicki into an inner chamber, revealing the Rills' true, gaseous forms behind a protective glass partition. This encounter fosters empathy and understanding, with the Doctor and Vicki accepting the Rills despite their alien appearance. However, Vicki quickly falls ill from the Rill atmosphere, forcing their return to the central chamber and underscoring the severe environmental challenges and the dwindling time. The Drahvins, having realized their guns are ineffective against the Chumblies, shift tactics and initiate a full-scale assault, focusing their efforts directly on the Rill spaceship.
The Drahvins launch a desperate, full-scale assault on the Rill base, realizing their weapons cannot harm the Chumblies and shifting their focus to the Rill spaceship itself. Inside the central chamber, the power transfer from the TARDIS to the Rill ship finally completes, signaling their readiness for departure with only half an hour remaining until the planet's explosion. The Rills confirm they possess sufficient power to escape and recharge in space. The Chumbley leader informs the Doctor's party that a Chumbley will escort them back to the TARDIS, then self-destruct to prevent capture or misuse. This revelation elicits a strong emotional reaction from Vicki, but the Doctor accepts the Rills' pragmatic decision, expressing gratitude for their assistance and noting the shared values between their disparate species. With an emotional farewell, the Rills begin their ship's launch sequence. As the Rill ship lifts off, Maaga and her Drahvins watch in horror, realizing their escape window has closed. The Doctor, Steven, and Vicki rush back to the TARDIS, with their Chumbley escort bravely covering their retreat by firing upon the pursuing Drahvins. The Doctor fumbles to unlock the TARDIS door, ushering his companions inside just as the ground begins to tremble and rumble. Steven quickly reemerges to toss the power cable out of the ship. Maaga observes the TARDIS dematerialize with fear etched on her face, moments before the planet violently breaks apart, consuming her and the remaining Drahvins. Inside the TARDIS, Vicki discovers an injured ankle, and the Doctor reflects on their constant encounters with danger. The episode concludes with the TARDIS dematerializing from the galaxy and a brief, unsettling glimpse of Jeff Garvey on the planet Kembel, setting the stage for the next adventure.
