The Nightmare Begins
After escaping Troy, the Doctor, Steven, and Katarina land on a jungle planet where they encounter stranded agent Bret Vyon, who desperately tries to warn Earth of an impending Dalek invasion and their alliance with Mavic Chen, Guardian of the Solar System.
Following their escape from the Trojan War, the Doctor, along with his companions Steven and Katarina, find themselves aboard the TARDIS with Steven gravely ill from blood poisoning. The Doctor lands the TARDIS on the jungle planet Kembel seeking a cure. Meanwhile, crashed on Kembel, Space Security Agent Bret Vyon struggles to contact Earth Central Communications to warn them of a dire threat. His comrade, Kurt, injured and despairing, awaits their inevitable doom at the hands of unseen enemies in the jungle.
On Earth, in the Central Communications control room, duty officers Roald and Lizan casually monitor incoming transmissions, distracted by news broadcasts featuring Mavic Chen, the Guardian of the Solar System. Vyon's desperate signal goes unnoticed amidst their routine duties and personal interests. Back on Kembel, Vyon's attempts to reach Earth fail, and he is forced to leave his injured comrade Kurt behind as deadly Daleks close in. Kurt is killed. Vyon, narrowly escaping, stumbles upon the newly arrived TARDIS.
Seeing the TARDIS materialize, Vyon confronts the Doctor, demanding the key to the ship at gunpoint. Inside the TARDIS, Steven's condition worsens. Vyon deceives Katarina and gains entry, hoping to use the ship to return to Earth and deliver his warning. Steven, in a moment of lucidity, attacks Vyon, but is subdued by the Doctor who returns to the TARDIS and uses his magnetic chair to restrain him. The Doctor ventures back out to investigate the city and discovers the Daleks have already formed an alliance with Mavic Chen. He overhears Chen declare he is "honored to be part of your plan to conquer Earth and all the planets in the solar system". The Doctor, horrified, rushes back to the TARDIS, now facing an even greater threat than before.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The episode opens inside the TARDIS, where the Doctor, Steven, and Katarina find themselves after escaping Troy. Steven suffers from severe blood poisoning, prompting the Doctor to land the TARDIS on a jungle planet, Kembel, in search of a cure. Katarina, new to this reality, expresses concern for Steven's deteriorating condition. Simultaneously, on Kembel, Space Security Agent Bret Vyon and his injured comrade Kurt Gantry struggle to transmit a dire warning to Earth. Their attempts to contact Earth Central Communications fail repeatedly, as duty officers Roald and Lizan remain distracted by news broadcasts featuring the esteemed Mavic Chen, Guardian of the Solar System, and their own trivial discussions about space vessels and entertainment. This establishes a stark contrast between the immediate, life-threatening peril on Kembel and the oblivious, mundane existence on Earth. The jungle environment on Kembel proves hostile, with unseen dangers closing in on Vyon and Kurt. Kurt, despairing and injured, refuses to move, insisting he will only slow Vyon down. As Daleks emerge from the jungle, Kurt sacrifices himself, buying Vyon time to escape. Vyon's radio transmitter is destroyed in his flight, severing his last link to Earth. Desperate and alone, Vyon witnesses the TARDIS materialize in a clearing, presenting his only remaining hope to deliver his critical warning. This sequence effectively sets up the immediate stakes for both the TARDIS crew and Vyon, culminating in their inevitable collision.

Following the TARDIS's materialization, Bret Vyon, driven by the urgency of his mission to warn Earth, confronts the Doctor at gunpoint, demanding the TARDIS key. The Doctor, initially perplexed, eventually surrenders the key. Vyon, using deception, convinces Katarina that the Doctor sent him to help Steven, gaining entry into the TARDIS. Inside, he attempts to operate the unfamiliar controls, hoping to pilot the ship back to Earth. Steven, regaining a moment of lucidity despite his illness, recognizes Vyon as a threat and attacks him with a spanner. The Doctor, returning to the TARDIS, quickly subdues Vyon using his 'magnetic chair,' an invention capable of restraining even a herd of elephants. With Vyon immobilized, the Doctor leaves the TARDIS once more, determined to investigate the nearby city he spotted through the dense jungle. Meanwhile, Katarina, despite her initial distrust, follows Vyon's instructions and administers his tablets to Steven, hoping to alleviate his suffering. This act showcases Vyon's desperate resourcefulness and the TARDIS crew's vulnerability, while simultaneously escalating the immediate danger as the Doctor ventures deeper into the unknown, unaware of the true nature of the city's inhabitants. The magnetic chair's introduction provides a temporary solution to Vyon's threat, allowing the Doctor to pursue his investigation.

The Doctor's investigation leads him through the treacherous Kembel jungle towards the mysterious city. Along the way, he discovers a humanoid skeleton, still clad in tattered clothing, and a discarded spool of tape, hinting at previous, ill-fated visitors. These discoveries deepen the Doctor's unease about the planet. He then observes the landing of a spacecraft at the city's spaceport, confirming the presence of advanced civilization. Concealed in the shadows, the Doctor is horrified to witness Daleks in the reception hall, confirming his gravest fears about the planet's true inhabitants. Simultaneously, back inside the TARDIS, Bret Vyon, still restrained, sees a Dalek on the exterior scanner, reinforcing the immediate danger to the ship and its occupants. The climax of the episode occurs when Mavic Chen, Guardian of the Solar System, arrives at the Dalek reception hall. Chen, a figure previously presented as a benevolent politician on Earth, openly declares his honor in being part of the Daleks' plan to conquer Earth and all the planets in the solar system. This shocking revelation exposes the true scale of the 'nightmare,' transforming a localized threat into a galactic conspiracy. Horrified by this betrayal and the immense danger, the Doctor rushes back to the TARDIS, now fully aware of the existential threat facing the entire solar system.
