The Power of the Daleks Part 6

After regenerating, the Doctor must convince his companions and the colonists of Vulcan that the seemingly subservient Daleks are a deadly threat, as the creatures secretly multiply and prepare to exterminate all humans on the planet.

Following his regeneration, the Doctor, along with Polly and Ben, arrives on the colony planet Vulcan, where Examiner Lesterson has rediscovered dormant Daleks. The colonists, led by Governor Hensell and later Bragen, are embroiled in political machinations, blind to the true danger the Daleks pose. Initially, the Daleks appear servile, obeying human commands, which lulls many into a false sense of security. However, the Doctor recognizes the inherent threat and tries to warn everyone, but his new appearance and warnings are met with skepticism.

As the Doctor investigates, he discovers that the Daleks are not only reactivating but also secretly duplicating themselves in Lesterson's lab, using the colony's power supply. The political situation on Vulcan deteriorates as Bragen orchestrates a coup, betraying his allies and consolidating power. Valmar, initially aligned with Bragen, uncovers the Governor's treachery and attempts to thwart his plans, recognizing the greater threat of the Daleks. Janley, another colonist, also sees Bragen's ruthlessness and tries to counteract his ambition.

The Daleks, now growing in numbers, begin their true plan: exterminating all humans. They manipulate the colonists' conflicts, turning them against each other while steadily increasing their own power. The Doctor, with the help of Ben, Polly, and Valmar, works to sabotage the Daleks' power source. As chaos erupts, the colonists find themselves caught between warring factions and the relentless Dalek onslaught.

Bragen, desperate to maintain control, attempts to negotiate with the Daleks, offering them anything in exchange for his safety, but the Daleks recognize his weakness and disregard him. The Doctor devises a plan to overload the Daleks' power system, using the colony's electrical supply to create a surge. Despite facing numerous obstacles and the skepticism of those around him, the Doctor succeeds in his gamble. The power surge destroys the Daleks and damages the colony's power grid.

In the aftermath, Bragen is killed by Valmar for his treachery, and the colonists begin the long process of rebuilding. The Doctor, Ben, and Polly depart in the TARDIS, leaving the devastated colony to recover. As they leave, a surviving Dalek's eye-stalk lifts, hinting that the threat may not be completely extinguished, and that the Doctor's victory may have come at a great cost.

Act 1

The act opens with the Daleks abandoning their pretense of subservience, taking positions for a full-scale extermination of all humans. The Doctor, Polly, and Quinn immediately encounter armed Daleks who block their path and threaten them, signaling the rapid escalation of the threat. Concurrently, Governor Bragen, having seized power, reveals his ruthless intent to Janley, planning to eliminate his own rebel allies, including Valmar, to consolidate absolute control. Valmar overhears Bragen's treachery, prompting a critical re-evaluation of his loyalties. Bragen broadcasts his false narrative of Hensell's murder and assumes temporary governorship, while the Doctor, reunited with Ben and Polly, urgently warns that the Daleks will exterminate everyone regardless of human factions. The Daleks initiate their extermination, plunging the colony into chaos. Valmar and Janley, desperate, attempt to weaponize Daleks against Bragen's guards, but the plan backfires as the Daleks turn on the rebels, proving their inherent betrayal and superior power; Janley dies in the ensuing conflict. In Lesterson's lab, the Doctor, Ben, and Polly learn from the increasingly fatalistic Lesterson that the Daleks are developing their own static power, rendering previous sabotage attempts obsolete. The Doctor devises a new, high-risk plan: to overload the Daleks' new power system using the colony's main supply. He dispatches Quinn to manipulate Bragen into sacrificing his remaining guards as a diversion, drawing the Daleks away. Bragen, initially resistant, reluctantly complies, highlighting his dwindling authority and desperation. The climax unfolds in Lesterson's lab as the Doctor and Valmar rig the power system. Lesterson, in a final, misguided attempt to assert his 'mastery' over his creations, approaches the Daleks as a servant and is summarily exterminated, underscoring the creatures' absolute ruthlessness. The Doctor successfully overloads the Daleks' temporary static circuit, triggering widespread explosions and disabling the Daleks across the colony. In the immediate aftermath, Bragen, stripped of power, attempts to reassert control, but Valmar, having witnessed Bragen's betrayals and the Daleks' devastation, executes him. The colony lies in ruins, its electrical system severely damaged. The Doctor, feigning ignorance of his precise actions, downplays the collateral damage. Ben and Polly reflect on the colony's tragic fate and the Doctor's unheeded warnings. The TARDIS departs, but a final, chilling shot of a Dalek eye-stalk lifting suggests the threat is not entirely extinguished, leaving a lingering sense of unease and the high cost of victory.
