The Highlanders Part 4

When the TARDIS lands on Culloden Moor after the historic battle, The Doctor, Ben, and Polly become entangled in the aftermath as they strive to evade capture by ruthless slave traders and return to their ship, all while unexpectedly gaining a new companion.

Following the Battle of Culloden, The Doctor, Ben, and Polly find themselves in the midst of a desperate situation. Ben is captured by Trask's men, who are involved in smuggling Jacobite rebels to be sold as slaves in the West Indies. The Doctor engineers Ben's escape, and they rendezvous with Polly and Kirsty, a local girl searching for her captured father.

The group infiltrates the Annabelle, the ship used for transporting the prisoners. Ben manages to free himself underwater, while The Doctor, posing as a German speaker, gets captured and taken to Solicitor Grey, the mastermind behind the operation. He claims to know the whereabouts of Prince Charles, hoping to buy time and create a diversion. Polly and Kirsty, meanwhile, use a rowing boat to reach the captured Highlanders in the hold, providing them with weapons.

The Highlanders, led by Willy MacKay, stage a revolt with the help of the provided weapons. Aboard the ship, Trask is defeated and thrown overboard. However, the group faces the challenge of escaping the area, as the English army is actively searching for rebels. They manage to convince the crew to sail the ship to France.

Back on land, The Doctor, Ben, and Polly try to return to the TARDIS, but their efforts are hindered by the presence of soldiers. After some narrow escapes and encounters, they enlist the help of Lieutenant Algernon Ffinch. Ffinch pretends to assist them but later reveals his true allegiance to Solicitor Grey. However, Ffinch has a change of heart after hearing Polly's story and arrests Grey for his illegal activities.

With Grey out of the picture, the group is free to continue their journey. Jamie, a young Highlander, decides not to go with the other Highlanders to France and joins The Doctor, Ben, and Polly instead. They return to the TARDIS on Culloden Moor, with Jamie joining them in their travels.

Act 1

Ben surfaces in the shadows, having escaped Trask's underwater trap, and makes his way to the quayside. There, he encounters the Doctor, disguised as a wounded soldier, who reveals their plan to arm the captured Highlanders aboard the Annabelle. Back in the Captain's Cabin, Solicitor Grey, Trask, and Perkins discuss the illicit slave trade, with Grey asserting his authority and the importance of their "parchments" for legal cover, while Trask expresses his contempt for the "Highland cattle." Meanwhile, in a barn, Ben recounts his Houdini-like escape to Polly and Kirsty, and the group finalizes their daring plan: Ben will take the Doctor in a rowing boat to the ship, pass weapons, while Polly and Kirsty, against initial objections, insist on accompanying them. The Doctor plans to get captured to create a diversion. On the Annabelle, the Highlanders, including Willy, Colin, and Jamie, lament their grim fate, fearing either the gallows or the plantations. Colin expresses a poignant wish to see his daughter, Kirsty, again. The Doctor is then dramatically dragged into the Captain's Cabin, captured by Trask's men. Posing as a German, the Doctor boldly claims to know the whereabouts of Prince Charles, using Kirsty's ring as proof to buy time and demand a ransom of ten thousand guineas from Grey, effectively diverting Grey's attention. Simultaneously, Polly and Kirsty navigate their rowing boat to the ship's hold, where Kirsty makes contact with her father, Colin, passing him a pistol and revealing their plan to arm the other prisoners. This act meticulously sets the stage for the imminent uprising, establishing the stakes, the villains' ruthlessness, and the heroes' ingenious, multi-pronged strategy for liberation.

Act 2

The Doctor, still in the Captain's Cabin, continues his elaborate deception, informing Grey that Prince Charles is disguised as a Highlander aboard the Annabelle. He points to Jamie, a young Highlander, as the supposed Prince, further fueling Grey's greed and diverting his attention from the real threat. This misdirection provides the critical window for the Highlanders to act. In the Annabelle's hold, the captured Highlanders, now armed with the pistols provided by Polly and Kirsty, erupt in a coordinated revolt. Led by Colin and Jamie, they overwhelm the unsuspecting sailors and guards, quickly subduing Grey and Perkins. Only Trask resists, engaging Willy MacKay in a fierce struggle. The fighting spills onto the deck, where Trask, still defiant, attempts to rally his remaining men. Ben confronts Trask, but it is Jamie, swinging dramatically on a rope, who intervenes, knocking Trask down. Jamie then forces Trask to the ship's rail, sending him overboard into the firth, effectively ending his command and the immediate threat he posed. Willy MacKay, though wounded, takes charge, declaring that the Annabelle will now sail for France, offering the remaining crew a choice between service or a cold swim. As the sailors prepare the ship, the Doctor, Ben, and Polly join the others on deck, celebrating their victory but acknowledging the new challenge of returning to the TARDIS amidst the English army. Perkins, sensing the shift in power, quickly pledges allegiance to the Highlanders, offering his French language skills for their journey. The Doctor, Ben, and Polly prepare to go ashore, taking Grey as a hostage, marking the transition from the ship-based conflict to the next phase of their escape. Jamie, however, makes a pivotal decision, choosing not to go to France with his fellow Highlanders, instead remaining on the quayside, signaling his intention to join the Doctor's group.

Act 3

On the quayside, the Doctor, Ben, and Polly watch the Annabelle sail into the fog, then express surprise when Jamie reveals himself, having chosen to stay with them rather than go to France. Jamie offers to guide them, immediately proving his worth as English soldiers appear. Ben and Jamie quickly drag Grey, their hostage, into a boathouse. Grey's cries for help alert the soldiers, leading to a tense confrontation where the group overpowers the Redcoats, but Grey seizes the opportunity to escape through a window, leaving the companions without their crucial leverage. Undeterred, the Doctor quickly devises a new plan. Outside the Sea Eagle Inn, they ambush Lieutenant Algernon Ffinch, forcing him to assist them. A chance encounter with Ffinch's Colonel nearly exposes them, but the Doctor, using Kirsty's ring again, fabricates a story about the Pretender, manipulating the Colonel into ordering Ffinch to accompany them on a supposed mission to apprehend the Prince. Later, in a cottage at dawn, Polly reveals the full extent of Solicitor Grey's illicit slave-trading activities to Ffinch, swaying his conscience. Grey then dramatically reappears with Redcoats, gloating over their capture and threatening severe punishment. However, Ffinch, having been moved by Polly's account, asserts his authority, silencing Grey and placing him under arrest for slave trading. The Doctor then reveals his ultimate cunning, producing the "lost" contracts from his pocket, solidifying the evidence against Grey. With Grey finally apprehended and the immediate threat neutralized, Ffinch bids them farewell, warning them about the continued search for rebels on the moors. Jamie, still curious about the contracts, learns of the Doctor's deception. As soldiers are heard approaching, Polly advocates for Jamie to join them, and the Doctor agrees, provided Jamie teaches him the bagpipes. The group, now including Jamie, races across Culloden Moor, finally reaching the TARDIS. Jamie watches in amazement as the Doctor unlocks the blue box, and Polly gently leads the hesitant Highlander inside, marking the beginning of his journey as a new companion.
