The Abominable Snowmen Part 4

The Doctor and Jamie arrive at a Tibetan monastery to find it under siege by robotic Yeti controlled by the Great Intelligence, who seeks to dominate humanity; the Doctor must stop them before the Intelligence fully manifests and destroys the monastery.

The Doctor and Jamie arrive in 1930s Tibet and become entangled in a conflict at a remote monastery. They discover that the monks are battling robotic Yeti, seemingly under the control of an ancient entity known as the Great Intelligence. The Intelligence is using the Yeti to exert its influence and gain a foothold in the physical world.

Victoria becomes a figure of suspicion when she is found near a Yeti that suddenly comes to life, leading some monks to believe she is a devil woman. The Doctor attempts to investigate the source of the Yeti's control, using a device to track their signals. He and Jamie find themselves trapped between the loyal monks, led by Khrisong, and those who have fallen under the influence of Padmasambhava, who is secretly serving the Great Intelligence. They capture a control sphere from a Yeti but nearly get crushed doing so.

As the situation escalates, Songsten, acting on behalf of Padmasambhava, manipulates events within the monastery. He frames the Doctor, Jamie and Travers and tries to undermine Khrisong's authority. Eventually, the monks imprison Victoria and Thomni. After Victoria escapes, the monks are in disarray with many losing faith in Khrisong. Songsten plans to betray those who oppose the Great Intelligence, facilitating the Intelligence's rise to power. The Doctor and Jamie must work to expose the truth and thwart the Intelligence's plans before it consumes the monastery and spreads its influence across the world. The episode ends with the Doctor facing an army of Yeti, leaving the fate of the monastery, and perhaps the world, hanging in the balance.

Act 1

The episode opens with immediate peril as a Yeti attacks Victoria and Thomni within the monastery's meeting room. Thomni bravely defends Victoria, allowing her to escape and seek help, but the creature proves impervious to the monks' traditional weapons. Thomni and Victoria manage to open the main gates, allowing the Yeti to exit, but this act of self-preservation later becomes a point of contention. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Jamie, observing from the mountainside, sense an ominous quiet before discovering their TARDIS guarded by a Yeti. The Doctor quickly deduces the Yeti are robots, operating under instructions, which raises questions about their unseen controller. In the monastery's inner sanctum, Padmasambhava converses with the unseen Great Intelligence, revealing its imminent materialization and the 'great experiment' about to begin, with Songsten making final preparations. Songsten is then seen placing a pulsating pyramid in a cave, a clear step in the Intelligence's manifestation. The Doctor, demonstrating ingenuity, disarms the TARDIS-guarding Yeti by removing its control sphere, only for the sphere to reactivate and pull Jamie towards the creature, forcing the Doctor to intervene and disable it. This incident reveals the spheres' homing function. Back at the monastery, internal tensions erupt. Khrisong confronts Thomni for disobeying orders by opening the gates, while Rinchen, fueled by superstition, accuses Victoria of being a 'devil woman' responsible for animating the Yeti. This suspicion, combined with Victoria's presence at the Yeti's reanimation, leads to her and Thomni's imprisonment, fracturing the monks' unity and leaving the Doctor and Jamie isolated from their allies.

Act 2

Following the discovery of the control sphere's homing ability, the Doctor and Jamie find themselves pursued by Yeti on the mountainside, the sphere's signal attracting more creatures. Despite Jamie's apprehension, the Doctor views this as a crucial opportunity to trace the main transmitter, prioritizing investigation over immediate escape. Meanwhile, in their cell, Thomni provides Victoria with vital historical context. He reveals the Doctor's ancient connection to the monastery's holy bell, suggesting the Doctor's presence spans centuries, and speaks of Padmasambhava's legendary ability to transcend his physical form and travel vast distances. This revelation broadens Victoria's understanding of the Doctor's nature and hints at Padmasambhava's true capabilities, deepening the mystery surrounding the Master. Concurrently, Songsten intensifies his covert operations, using hypnosis to enter the monastery unseen and receiving direct instructions from Padmasambhava to compel the monks to abandon their home. Outside, the Doctor skillfully employs the control sphere as a decoy, distracting an encircling group of Yeti and allowing him and Jamie to escape their trap, demonstrating his strategic acumen. Back in the cell, Victoria, feigning illness after being given a drugged drink, seizes an opportunity to escape, showcasing her resilience and resourcefulness. This escape further destabilizes the monastery's internal order and adds to the chaos, as the monks' faith in Khrisong's leadership wanes under Songsten's manipulative influence.

Act 3

The narrative accelerates towards a critical turning point as Songsten attempts to consolidate his power within the monastery, advocating for the monks to abandon their home under the guise of Padmasambhava's wisdom. Khrisong, however, learns of the Doctor's return with vital equipment and defiantly rejects Songsten's counsel, reaffirming his intent to fight. This open challenge to Songsten's authority marks a significant escalation in the internal conflict. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Jamie arrive at the monastery gates, accompanied by a disoriented Travers, who collapses after uttering a cryptic warning about a 'pyramid.' This fragmented information hints at the Great Intelligence's physical manifestation and its location. Rinchen, still convinced of Victoria's malevolent influence, immediately orders the arrest of the strangers, including the now-incapacitated Travers. Despite Khrisong's protests and his attempts to vouch for the Doctor's helpful intentions, Songsten, invoking Padmasambhava's supreme authority, overrides Khrisong and ensures the Doctor, Jamie, and Travers are taken to the cells. This act effectively neutralizes the protagonists, removing their immediate ability to intervene. Khrisong, though stripped of much of his power, makes a final stand, refusing to abandon the monastery and ordering his warriors to search for Victoria, demonstrating his unwavering loyalty. Left alone, Songsten receives final, chilling instructions from Padmasambhava: if the monks will not be led, they must be 'driven' from the monastery. In a decisive act of betrayal, Songsten opens the main gates, allowing the Yeti army to pour into the monastery, effectively sealing its fate and setting the stage for the Great Intelligence's full manifestation.
