The Ice Warriors Part 1

When the TARDIS lands near a British base struggling to stop a new ice age, the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria must help them control the weather, while also dealing with a scientist thawing out a dangerous Ice Warrior.

The TARDIS materializes on its side near a British base in the middle of a new ice age. The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria emerge to find a world threatened by advancing glaciers and a scientific team desperately trying to control the climate with an ioniser. Leader Clent and his second-in-command, Garrett, are fighting a losing battle to keep the ioniser stable and prevent Europe from being swallowed by ice. Meanwhile, Scientist Arden, ignoring Clent's orders, discovers a humanoid figure encased in ice.

Ignoring the base's emergency, Arden thaws out the Ice Warrior, believing it to be a scientific breakthrough. As the ioniser continues to malfunction, the Doctor offers his assistance, quickly diagnosing the problem and stabilizing the device, despite Clent's initial skepticism. Impressed, Clent enlists the Doctor's aid, seeking his expertise to solve the crisis.

While the Doctor learns about the history of the crisis and the efforts to combat the ice age, Arden brings the Ice Warrior back to the base. Storr and Penley, two other figures at the base, observe Arden's team, but separate due to an accident and different objectives. The avalanche injures Storr, and Penley tends to him, but they part ways.

Clent tests the Doctor's knowledge, which he passes easily, and describes the state of the planet due to famine, population issues, and lack of plant life. The Doctor quickly deduces the issue, and Clent discusses the planet's ionisation methods that can melt glaciers and change the planet's weather. Clent seeks the Doctor to join their mission to help resolve the ice age issue. As the episode concludes, Arden is bringing the Ice Warrior back to the base, unaware of the danger it poses, with the Doctor and his companions unaware of the danger they will pose together.

Act 1

The narrative opens in the Ioniser Control Room, a high-tech facility struggling against an advancing ice age. Leader Clent, a stern figure, confronts his second-in-command, Garrett, about the failing ioniser, a crucial device for glacier containment. Clent dismisses evacuation plans and expresses frustration over the absence of Scientist Penley, insisting Garrett make the machine work. The base faces a 'Red State Emergency' as the ioniser nears disintegration, threatening Europe and the global glacier containment program. Simultaneously, at the glacier face, Scientist Arden ignores urgent warnings from the base, prioritizing his discovery of a humanoid figure encased in ice. He dismisses his subordinate Walters' concerns about Clent's fury and the computerised schedule, determined to excavate what he believes is a 'brilliant discovery.' Meanwhile, the TARDIS materializes precariously outside the base. The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria emerge into the harsh, icy landscape, observing the massive protective dome of the base. They encounter two men, Penley and Storr, leaving the base, before the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to open the door, leading them inside. Once inside, they are immediately labeled 'scavengers' and assigned to an evacuation flight. The Doctor, however, detects a critical malfunction in the base's electronic machinery, specifically the ioniser, and despite Victoria's apprehension, decides to investigate. This act establishes the immediate environmental threat, the internal conflicts within the base's leadership, and introduces the Doctor and his companions as accidental, yet essential, interlopers. The Doctor's immediate perception of the ioniser's danger sets him on a collision course with Clent's authority.

Act 2

The Doctor bursts into the Ioniser Control Room, immediately confronting Clent and his team with an accurate, uncomputerized prediction of an imminent reactor explosion. Despite Clent's initial skepticism and attempts by security to remove the 'scavengers,' the Doctor quickly takes charge, issuing precise instructions to cut reactor links, uncouple transformer units, and manipulate power, stabilizing the ioniser just seconds before catastrophe. Clent, initially dismissive, is forced to concede the Doctor's accuracy when the computer confirms the Doctor's original, dire prognosis. Deeply impressed, Clent's demeanor shifts from hostility to reliance, especially after he experiences a moment of physical weakness from prolonged duty. He then subjects the Doctor to a scientific test, challenging him to identify the cause of the ice age and a solution. The Doctor effortlessly diagnoses a severe drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide and proposes ionisation as the remedy, explaining the mechanism to his companions and Clent's team. Clent further details how artificial foods and reduced plant life led to the carbon dioxide depletion, and how the ioniser aims to reverse this. He reveals the critical state of the global containment program and the missing senior scientist, Penley, before formally enlisting the Doctor's aid in their mission. Concurrently, at the glacier face, Arden continues his excavation of the 'Ice Warrior,' dismissing Walters' concerns about the weather and Clent's potential anger. Penley and Storr, observing Arden's activities, discuss Arden's archaeological inclinations and Clent's ambition. An avalanche then separates Penley and Storr from Arden's team, injuring Storr and sweeping Davis into a crevasse, highlighting the dangers of the environment and the consequences of Arden's unauthorized activities.

Act 3

The Doctor accepts Clent's offer to join the mission to combat the ice age, despite his reservations about working with computers. Garrett, the base's computer specialist, begins to brief him on the base's fully computerized operations and their philosophy of eliminating risk through collective decision-making for the 'common good.' This interaction highlights a philosophical clash between the Doctor's intuitive, individualistic approach and the base's rigid, data-driven methodology. Simultaneously, Scientist Arden, having completed his unauthorized excavation, leads a team transporting the massive, ice-encased humanoid figure back to the base on a gurney. Arden's instructions to his team emphasize careful handling of his 'brilliant discovery,' underscoring his continued scientific zeal and obliviousness to the potential danger. The episode concludes with the Ice Warrior being brought into the base's corridors, a new, formidable threat now physically present within the human sanctuary. The Doctor and his companions, integrated into the base's efforts to prevent a global catastrophe, remain entirely unaware of the immediate and profound danger this ancient alien poses, setting the stage for the escalating conflict in subsequent episodes. The resolution of the immediate ioniser crisis gives way to the introduction of a far more unpredictable and potentially devastating threat, directly brought into their midst by human curiosity and ambition.
