Fury From The Deep Part 1

When the TARDIS lands near a gas refinery, the Doctor and his companions stumble upon a mysterious threat involving strange foam, silenced workers, and a chilling pulse emanating from the facility's pipelines, endangering the entire operation.

The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria arrive on the shores of England via the TARDIS, only to find themselves embroiled in a perplexing situation at a EuroSea Gas refinery. Their arrival is met with suspicion and violence when they are shot after investigating a strange foam near a large steel pipe leading from the sea. Upon waking, they're interrogated by Robson, the facility's stern Chief, about tampering with the emergency release valve. Robson suspects them of sabotage, especially since contact has been lost with one of the rigs at sea and there's a pressure drop in the gas lines.

Harris, Robson's second-in-command, is more open to the idea that something else is afoot, as he believes there's something blocking the pipeline. Despite the Doctor's warnings and Harris's calculations pointing to a progressive pattern in the pressure changes, Robson stubbornly refuses to shut off the gas flow or heed their concerns. This leads to rising tension between Robson and his crew, particularly with a Dutch representative, van Lutyens, who expresses concerns about morale and safety.

Meanwhile, strange occurrences continue at the refinery. Harris's wife, Maggie, becomes ill after being stung by seaweed she finds planted in a file folder at their home. The file contained Harris’s research regarding the gas pressure drops at the facility, and the seaweed appeared to be animate. Back at the refinery, crew members report hearing a peculiar, pulsating sound within the pipeline, similar to a heartbeat, confirming the Doctor's earlier experience. Risking capture, the Doctor and Jamie sneak away from confinement to investigate further, leaving Victoria behind. However, Victoria escapes on her own, and is led to an oxygen store room, where she finds a mass of strange foam, then is locked inside by a mysterious figure in a gas mask. As the Doctor and Jamie find the pipeline room, searching for the sound, Victoria cries out, desperate for rescue.

Act 1

The TARDIS materializes offshore of an English beach, bringing the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria to a shingle coast. They discover unusual, large clumps of foam and a massive steel pipeline marked "EuroSea Gas." The Doctor, driven by curiosity, investigates a control box on the pipe, employing his sonic screwdriver to open it. Inside, he detects a peculiar, rhythmic thumping sound, akin to a heartbeat, emanating from within the pipe itself. Their investigation is abruptly interrupted when an unseen rifleman shoots and tranquilizes them. They awaken in a brightly lit control hall, disoriented and unable to move, under the stern gaze of Chief Robson. Robson, convinced they are saboteurs, interrogates them about tampering with an emergency release valve, citing a critical pressure drop in the gas lines and the unexplained loss of contact with an offshore rig. Harris, Robson's second-in-command, displays a flicker of doubt regarding their guilt, hinting at a deeper problem within the pipeline itself. Despite the Doctor's attempts to explain his innocent curiosity, Robson dismisses their warnings, orders them confined to a bunk room, and refuses to consider any alternative explanations for the facility's growing crisis. This act establishes the mysterious threat, the Doctor's initial, unsettling discovery, and the immediate conflict with Robson's rigid authority, setting the stage for escalating dangers.

Act 2

Confined to the bunk room, the Doctor attempts to convince Harris that an unknown entity moves within the pipes, a notion Harris initially dismisses as impossible marine life. Meanwhile, the crisis at the refinery deepens. Robson's video link with Rig D yields a disturbing conversation: the rig's commander, Carney, whispers repeatedly that "everything's under control" despite an accident and two men being "out of action," before contact is lost again. Harris, increasingly concerned, presents Robson with detailed calculations demonstrating a consistent, progressive pattern in the pressure drops, arguing it proves a blockage in the pipeline. Robson, however, stubbornly dismisses Harris's scientific evidence, attributing the readings to a faulty gauge and Harris's file mysteriously disappears. Concurrently, Harris's wife, Maggie, is sent home to retrieve the missing file, only to discover animate seaweed planted within it. She is stung by the writhing plant, becoming visibly ill, hinting at a biological component to the threat. A Dutch representative, van Lutyens, confronts Robson, expressing grave concerns about declining crew morale and safety, directly challenging Robson's leadership and his refusal to acknowledge the escalating problems. The Doctor's initial auditory discovery gains crucial validation when Chief Baxter from another control rig reports hearing the identical "peculiar, pulsating, heartbeat-like" sound emanating from the pipeline. This collective confirmation solidifies the Doctor's resolve, prompting him and Jamie to escape confinement and investigate the pipeline room directly. Victoria, instructed to remain behind, disobeys and ventures out alone, unknowingly heading towards immediate danger.

Act 3

Victoria, having disobeyed the Doctor's instruction to remain in the bunk room, explores the refinery's labyrinthine corridors alone. Her search leads her to an oxygen store room, where she observes a mysterious, gas-masked figure manipulating valves, causing the room's atmosphere to become stiflingly rich in oxygen. The figure, upon hearing Victoria, locks her inside the room. Victoria attempts to pick the lock with a hairpin, but her efforts prove futile. A metal grille in the wall then opens, and a mass of strange, bubbling foam begins to emerge, expanding rapidly and revealing something moving ominously within its depths. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Jamie arrive at the massive pipeline room, a continuation of the pipe they found on the beach. The Doctor uses his stethoscope on the main pipe, confirming the distinctive, pulsating "heartbeat" sound from within. Just as they pinpoint the source of the mysterious sound, Victoria's desperate cries for help echo through the interconnected pipes and corridors. The Doctor and Jamie immediately recognize her voice, realizing she is in peril. The act culminates with Victoria trapped and confronting the physical manifestation of the mysterious, animate threat, while the Doctor and Jamie, now aware of her distress, abandon their investigation to embark on an urgent rescue mission, ending Episode One on a perilous cliffhanger.
