The Wheel In Space Part 2
On a space station, Controller Jarvis Bennett wants to destroy an incoming rocket, but Doctor Corwyn suspects survivors are on board and the rocket may be the source of disturbances on the Wheel, and Jamie interferes with the station's operations.
On a space station called the Wheel, Controller Jarvis Bennett is concerned about an incoming rocket Silver Carrier that is far off course. Despite Doctor Corwyn's caution, Bennett is ready to destroy the rocket, seeing it as a menace to the station. Ryan and Lernov monitor the rocket's approach, while Casali attempts to communicate with it. Corwyn expresses her doubts to Bennett, suspecting an emergency occurred on the Silver Carrier and questioning why it didn't automatically go to its destination as per plan. Bennett insists that damage to the control sensors caused the deviation.
Suddenly, Rudkin, the radio operator, experiences pain from noise through his headphones, and Lernov notices the approach indicators are all at red. The green system goes crazy, and Ryan gets Doctor Corwyn. Bennett attributes it to the rocket, while Jamie uses the cap of the TVG to create a pulsed signal. Lernov identifies a signal coming from the rocket, suggesting someone is on board. Bennett sends two men to investigate. The recovered passengers are Jamie and the Doctor who is unconscious and hurt. Laleham, the new radio operator, communicates with Voyager Five about a meteorite storm. Ryan, Lernov, and Chang discuss odd signs, temporary faults, air pressure drops which correlate with the rocket's arrival.
Doctor Corwyn examines Jamie and the Doctor, who is suffering from concussion. Jamie evades questions about the crew and gives a false name to the doctor. Corwyn becomes suspicious of Jamie, realizing he shows no signs of space travel training and is lying about his condition. Bennett worries about the situation affecting the crew. Corwyn reports on Jamie's lies about having a fever and suspicions about the Doctor's name being John Smith. She suggests the possibility of sabotage, as some on Earth oppose the space program. Bennett takes this seriously and thinks there is a possible act of sabotage. Meanwhile, Zoe shows Jaime around the Wheel, taking him to meet Bill Duggan in the Power Room. Duggan shows the weapons the Wheel has to defend itself, explaining the laser can destroy any attacker within 10,000 miles. Jamie becomes curious as to why a gun is needed in space. Jamie asks many questions about the weapons, when Zoe starts to discuss the Doctor, and his credentials. He learns the Wheel is planning to destroy his ship. Back in Corwyn's office, Bennett is suspicious, but Corwyn tells Bennett that Jamie is lying. Jamie is now aware of the situation and the capabilities of the Wheel.
Jamie returns to the power room, going unnoticed by various crew members. Bennett questions Duggan and Zoe, but they do not know where Jamie went. Lernov confides in Ryan about her unease regarding the rocket, seeing it as sinister.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The Wheel's Controller, Jarvis Bennett, prepares to destroy an off-course rocket, the Silver Carrier, viewing it as an undeniable menace to the station's safety. Despite Doctor Corwyn's persistent pleas for caution and her logical arguments against immediate destruction, Bennett remains resolute, dismissing her concerns about potential survivors or an emergency aboard the rogue vessel. The situation rapidly escalates when the Wheel is struck by a sudden, powerful static pulse, incapacitating a radio operator and causing critical system indicators to flash red and go "crazy." Bennett, unwavering, attributes this disruption directly to the rocket, further solidifying his conviction that it must be eliminated. However, a crucial turning point emerges as Lernov, the radio operator, identifies a distinct, repetitive signal embedded within the static, definitively tracing its origin to the Silver Carrier. This revelation confirms the presence of life aboard the seemingly derelict craft, forcing Bennett to dispatch a recovery team. The team retrieves two individuals: Jamie and an unconscious Doctor. Simultaneously, a growing unease spreads among the crew as Ryan, Lernov, and Chang discuss a disturbing pattern of correlating events—temporary system faults, inexplicable glitches, and minor air pressure drops—all of which began with the Silver Carrier's arrival. These accumulating anomalies transform the initial threat of a rogue rocket into a profound mystery, hinting at a deeper, more complex connection between the new arrivals and the Wheel's sudden instability.

Following their recovery, Doctor Corwyn examines Jamie, quickly discerning his evasiveness and deliberate falsehoods, particularly his fabricated name for the Doctor ("John Smith") and his feigned illness. Her professional assessment reveals Jamie's lack of any discernible space travel training, leading her to conclude he is lying about his background and the events aboard the Silver Carrier. Corwyn reports these suspicions to Controller Bennett, explicitly suggesting Jamie could be a stowaway or, more alarmingly, an agent of sabotage, potentially linked to Earth factions opposing the space program. Bennett, already grappling with the Wheel's unexplained disturbances, takes Corwyn's theory seriously, finding that it "fits" the accumulating mysteries. Concurrently, Corwyn assigns Zoe to discreetly observe Jamie, who is given a tour of the Wheel. During this tour, Jamie is shown the Power Room by Bill Duggan, where he learns about the station's formidable X-ray laser, capable of destroying targets thousands of miles away. The narrative reaches a critical juncture when Jamie overhears crew members discussing the Wheel's imminent plan to activate this very laser to blast his ship, the Silver Carrier, out of existence. This stark revelation provides Jamie with an urgent and personal motivation to intervene. He quietly slips away to the power room, unnoticed by the crew, as Bennett, now aware of Jamie's disappearance, initiates a search. The act concludes with Lernov expressing her deep unease about the rocket, sensing a "sinister" presence, underscoring the escalating tension and the shift from suspicion to imminent conflict.
