The Invasion Part 7

The Doctor and UNIT must thwart a Cyberman invasion masterminded by the treacherous Vaughn, who believes he can control the cyborgs, before they obliterate humanity and claim Earth as their own.

As the Cyberman invasion of Earth begins, the Doctor, along with Jamie and Isobel, find themselves caught in the middle of the chaos. UNIT, led by the Brigadier, struggles to regain control as major cities fall silent under Cyber-control. Captain Turner attempts to keep lines open while desperately seeking to rescue personnel. The Doctor discovers that the invasion is orchestrated by Vaughn, a human who has been in league with the Cybermen for years, believing he can control them and reshape the world.

Vaughn's plan involves using technology developed by Professor Watkins to control the Cybermen. Packer, Vaughn's skeptical underling, helps carry out Vaughn’s orders but warns him that the Cybermen may not be fully controllable. The Doctor realizes the Cybermen are using a signal transmitted from near the moon to control the population, making them susceptible to conversion.

As the Cybermen tighten their grip, UNIT attempts to fight back, but their efforts are hampered by the pervasive Cyber-control. The Brigadier learns of a Russian rocket base and the possibility of launching a missile to disrupt the Cyber-control signal. Turner is dispatched to Russia to secure the rocket while the Brigadier focuses on defending Earth.

The Doctor, knowing that time is running out, decides to confront Vaughn directly, hoping to buy UNIT time to prepare a counter-offensive. Leaving his radio open, the Doctor ventures into Vaughn's headquarters via the sewers, broadcasting his conversation to UNIT. Meanwhile, the Brigadier and Zoe work to revive personnel at a defense base near Henlow Downs, fitting them with neuristors to protect them from Cyber-control.

At Henlow Downs, Zoe uses her exceptional intelligence to devise a plan to maximize the effectiveness of the base's anti-missile defenses. As the Cybermen launch their invasion fleet, Zoe provides precise calculations to target and destroy the incoming ships, creating a chain reaction that eliminates a significant portion of the fleet. With the information gleaned from eavesdropping on the Doctor's confrontation, UNIT prepares to strike at the heart of Vaughn's operation, while the Doctor faces Vaughn, attempting to reason with him and expose the folly of his alliance with the Cybermen, who ultimately intend to betray him.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor, Jamie, and Isobel regaining consciousness amidst the initial chaos of the Cyberman invasion. Captain Turner establishes contact with UNIT Control, confirming widespread disruption and the precarious situation of UNIT personnel. Simultaneously, Vaughn, the human orchestrating the invasion, asserts his authority over the Cybermen to his Planner, emphasizing his intention to control the cyborg army and reshape the world. He dispatches Packer to recapture Professor Watkins, whose technology is crucial for Cyberman control. A UNIT jeep, transporting the Doctor's party and Watkins, is ambushed by Vaughn's forces, resulting in injuries to Watkins and Jamie, forcing a desperate escape. Aboard a UNIT aeroplane, the Brigadier, Doctor, and Turner assess the global silence caused by Cyber-control. The Doctor deduces the Cyber-control signals originate near the moon, necessitating a missile strike. The Brigadier recalls a Russian rocket base with a launch vehicle nearing readiness, prompting him to dispatch Captain Turner to Russia to secure it and revive its personnel. Recognizing the urgency, the Doctor decides to directly confront Vaughn, infiltrating his headquarters via the sewers while broadcasting his conversation to UNIT, hoping to gain critical intelligence and buy time. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, accompanied by Zoe, then departs for Henlow Downs to prepare ground defenses and revive additional personnel. This act establishes the immediate peril of the invasion, Vaughn's treacherous role, and UNIT's two-pronged counter-offensive, setting the stage for a desperate struggle.

Act 2

As the Doctor navigates the subterranean sewers, he establishes radio contact with the Brigadier, confirming his infiltration route to Vaughn's headquarters and signaling his intent to broadcast their impending conversation. Simultaneously, Vaughn, alerted to the Doctor's presence via security monitors, allows him to enter, viewing the Doctor as a strategic "insurance" asset rather than an immediate threat. The Doctor directly confronts Vaughn in his office, challenging Vaughn's delusional belief in his absolute control over the Cybermen and exposing the folly of his alliance. The Doctor further reveals that UNIT has successfully secured Professor Watkins, undermining Vaughn's ability to produce more control machines. Meanwhile, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Zoe arrive at the Henlow Downs defense base, where they begin the arduous task of reviving Cyber-controlled personnel, including Major Branwell, by fitting them with neuristors. Back in Vaughn's office, the Cyberman Planner informs Vaughn of the imminent launch of the invasion fleet, prompting Vaughn to order Packer to align the radio beam for their arrival. At Henlow Downs, the newly revived personnel, led by Branwell, assess their anti-missile defenses. The tension escalates dramatically as the Cyberman invasion fleet appears on radar, signaling the immediate and overwhelming threat of a full-scale attack. This act meticulously builds the dual lines of rising action, with the Doctor's dangerous intelligence-gathering mission running parallel to UNIT's frantic preparations for a direct confrontation.

Act 3

With the Cyberman invasion fleet confirmed and rapidly approaching, Vaughn, despite the Doctor's impassioned pleas to halt the attack and recognize the Cybermen's inevitable betrayal, remains resolute. He asserts he has no alternative but to proceed, driven by years of meticulous planning. At Henlow Downs, Major Branwell and Sergeant Peters monitor the incoming fleet, which appears as a formidable V-formation on their radar. The urgency intensifies as the fleet closes in, prompting Zoe to intervene with a radical proposal. Observing the Cybermen's structured formation, Zoe identifies an opportunity to trigger a chain reaction of explosions, maximizing the impact of UNIT's limited missile arsenal. Initially, Major Branwell expresses skepticism, citing insufficient time for complex calculations. However, the Brigadier, recognizing Zoe's exceptional intellect, overrides Branwell's objections, granting her a mere thirty seconds to compute the precise targeting data. Under immense pressure, Zoe rapidly performs the necessary calculations, providing the critical coordinates to Peters. With only seconds remaining, Branwell inserts the firing keys and launches the missile clusters. The missiles hurtle into space, striking the Cyber-fleet and unleashing a devastating series of explosions that decimate a significant portion of the invading force. This act culminates in a critical, albeit temporary, victory for UNIT, demonstrating human ingenuity against overwhelming odds, while leaving the Doctor's confrontation with Vaughn unresolved, setting up future conflict.
