In "The War Games - Episode Seven", the Doctor, along with Jamie and Carstairs, find themselves in a dire situation as they are hunted by the War Chief and Security Chief within the complex war game simulation. After escaping the shrinking Sidrat, The Doctor is able to use his wits to lock off the controls and take the master circuit rods, allowing them to escape the Sidrat back into the time stream. The Doctor and his companions venture into various time zones, attempting to evade their pursuers at every turn, ending up in the 1917 zone on the Western Front. They encounter General Smythe, an alien disguised as a British officer, who subjects soldiers to mental processing, forcing them to fight in the war games. Carstairs recognizes the artificiality of their surroundings, leading Smythe to order the Doctor's execution. Zoe and the resistance fighters launch an attack, rescuing the Doctor and his companions. They take over Smythe's headquarters, finding the technology controlling the area. Smythe attempts to deactivate the area control to stop the resistance, but is killed before he can complete the process. The War Chief and Security Chief argue over their failure, while the War Lord arrives, taking charge and devising a brutal plan to crush the resistance. Recognizing their vulnerability, the Doctor and Zoe work together to dismantle the control unit, creating a time zone barrier around the chateau, protecting them from the processed forces. The episode culminates in a strategic stalemate, with the Doctor setting the stage for a counterattack against the War Lords.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The Doctor, Jamie, and Carstairs execute a daring escape from the rapidly shrinking Sidrat, with the Doctor's quick thinking allowing him to disable its controls and acquire master circuit rods. This act of defiance immediately puts them back on the run, intensifying the pursuit by the War Chief and Security Chief, who now focus their efforts on the 1917 zone. The antagonists' internal power struggles escalate with the arrival of the formidable War Lord, who demands accountability and efficiency amidst their failures. Despite the Doctor's strategic attempt to evade the 1917 zone by landing elsewhere, they inadvertently find themselves in the Roman zone, where they are attacked and forced to retreat back into the protective time zone barrier. Emerging from the barrier, they are precisely where their pursuers anticipated: the 1917 Western Front. Here, they are quickly spotted, pinned down by machine gun fire, and captured by British troops under the command of General Smythe, setting the stage for their direct confrontation with the war games' alien operators.

Carstairs courageously exposes Smythe's true alien identity and the artificial nature of their war, but Smythe dismisses his claims as delirium and proceeds with the Doctor's execution. Smythe reports the Doctor's supposed death to the War Chief, who expresses greater concern over the missing processing machine than the Doctor's demise. Just as the firing squad prepares to execute the Doctor, Zoe and the resistance fighters launch a surprise attack on Smythe's headquarters, rescuing the Doctor and his companions. During the chaos, Smythe attempts to destroy the area control unit to prevent its capture by the resistance, but Russell bursts in and kills him.
