Spearhead from Space Part 2

A newly regenerated Doctor, suffering from amnesia, must team up with UNIT and a skeptical scientist to uncover an alien plot involving plastic meteorites and killer dolls, all while evading capture and trying to regain his lost memories.

Following his regeneration, the Doctor crash-lands on Earth in his TARDIS, amidst a shower of strange meteorites. He is quickly incapacitated and taken to a hospital, where his unusual physiology confounds medical experts. The Brigadier and UNIT are called in to investigate the meteorites, discovering a strange plastic fragment among them. Liz Shaw, a brilliant but skeptical scientist, determines the fragments are manufactured and potentially alien. Meanwhile, the Doctor recovers and escapes from the hospital.

The Brigadier learns that the aliens are attempting to abduct the Doctor for unknown reasons. UNIT works to secure the remaining meteorite fragments, but one is stolen by a mannequin. Elsewhere, John Ransome, inventor discovers his plastics factory has been taken over. He is dismissed and warned to stay away. Ransome grows suspicious and investigates, braving barbed wire to break into his old workshop. The Doctor, using a device to track the TARDIS, arrives at UNIT headquarters seeking his police box time machine, claiming amnesia. The Brigadier is uncertain, but needs the Doctor’s help understanding the alien threat.

The Doctor and Liz begin to investigate the plastic fragments. The Doctor deduces they were hollow spheres and their contents have been collected. UNIT investigates the meteor crash sites and the missing plastic spheres while, unknown to them, the aliens, led by the impassive Channing, are using the factory to create duplicates, monitored by Hibbert. They are also creating a duplicate of General Scobie. The aliens plan is to replace key figures with duplicates. As Ransome breaks into the factory he seeks the workshop discovering the alien plan.

Act 1

The episode opens with the Doctor in a deep, self-induced coma at Ashbridge Cottage Hospital, his alien physiology baffling Dr. Henderson. UNIT's Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Munro investigate, discovering the TARDIS key clutched in the Doctor's hand and a strange, lightweight plastic meteorite fragment. Munro reveals a photograph of the impassive Channing, who posed as a reporter during the Doctor's abduction attempt, confirming an organized, hostile force targets the Doctor. Simultaneously, John Ransome, inventor of a popular plastic doll, arrives at his factory to find it drastically altered and under new, secretive management. Hibbert, his former partner, dismisses Ransome, citing a 'new policy' and warning him to stay away, while Channing observes silently. This sequence establishes the primary mystery surrounding the Doctor, the alien threat's presence on Earth, and their mysterious operations within Ransome's factory. Liz Shaw, a brilliant but skeptical scientist, begins her analysis of the meteorite fragment, quickly determining its manufactured, non-terrestrial origin, yet she resists the Brigadier's more speculative conclusions about aliens. The Brigadier expresses his confusion regarding the aliens' motivation for abducting the Doctor, setting up a central question for the narrative. This act effectively sets the stage, introducing the key players and the initial threads of the alien conspiracy.

Act 2

As the alien plot deepens, Channing, the impassive alien leader, instructs Hibbert to maintain the factory's facade, revealing their concern over two missing 'energy units.' Channing's cryptic remarks about 'all energy is a form of life' hint at the true nature of their technology. Meanwhile, Seeley the poacher discovers one such pulsing, beeping globe and hides it, unknowingly possessing a crucial alien device. The TARDIS is delivered to UNIT HQ, but the Brigadier's key fails to open it, underscoring the Doctor's unique connection to his ship. General Scobie, UNIT's liaison, arrives, and Liz Shaw, with her characteristic bluntness, reveals the TARDIS is a spaceship, further challenging conventional understanding. Concurrently, the Doctor awakens from his self-induced coma at the hospital, escapes his ward, and, after a comical interlude involving a shower and stolen clothes, commandeers Dr. Beavis's vintage roadster, driving off to an unknown destination. A critical turning point occurs when a mannequin, revealed to be an alien operative, causes a UNIT Land Rover crash and steals the second recovered energy unit, demonstrating the aliens' active and aggressive pursuit of their objectives. The control room, filled with mannequins and a giant ganglion, confirms the aliens' sinister purpose, as Channing prepares for General Scobie's arrival, revealing a life-sized dummy bearing Scobie's features, signaling the aliens' intent to replace key human figures with duplicates. This act escalates the threat and brings the Doctor back into play.

Act 3

The Doctor, using a wrist-mounted device that homes in on the TARDIS, dramatically arrives at UNIT headquarters, driving his stolen car into the underground garage. He immediately demands to see the Brigadier, asserting his identity despite his amnesia. Confronting the Brigadier and Liz Shaw, the Doctor confirms his identity by demonstrating the TARDIS key works for him, though he admits his memory loss. His eccentric demeanor and a brief, unexplained memory of the 'planet Delphon' further establish his unique character. The Brigadier, recognizing the Doctor's potential value in understanding the alien threat, agrees to a conditional alliance: the Doctor will help UNIT in exchange for the TARDIS key. The Doctor and Liz immediately begin to collaborate, with the Doctor quickly deducing that the plastic meteorite fragments were once hollow spheres, implying their contents have been collected and taken elsewhere. This crucial insight shifts UNIT's investigation from mere fragments to the missing contents. Simultaneously, John Ransome, driven by suspicion and a desire to reclaim his work, bravely cuts through barbed wire and forces his way into his old factory workshop. As he pries open the door, the alien plot to duplicate General Scobie is explicitly revealed, with Channing showing Scobie his life-sized dummy, confirming the aliens' infiltration strategy. Ransome's entry into the workshop positions him to discover the full extent of the alien operation, setting up a direct confrontation and accelerating the narrative towards a deeper understanding of the alien agenda. This act solidifies the Doctor's role, forms a new investigative team, and brings a human element directly into the heart of the alien conspiracy.
