Doctor Who and The Silurians Part 4

The Doctor attempts to prevent a war between humans and the Silurians, an intelligent reptilian species awakened from hibernation, while the Brigadier prepares an attack, and a government official arrives to assess the situation, leading to escalating tensions and conflict.

In the fourth episode, the Doctor continues his investigation into the power failures plaguing a nuclear research center, uncovering the presence of Silurians—an intelligent, reptilian species awakened from long hibernation in nearby caves. He attempts to understand their motives and prevent a conflict with humanity. He speaks with Major Baker about the existence of the Silurians. Meanwhile, Major Baker, determined to expose saboteurs he believes are responsible for the power drains, escapes from the sickbay and ventures into the caves, only to be captured by the Silurians. The Doctor, knowing the Brigadier's military instincts, fears a violent confrontation and seeks to make contact with the Silurians to find a peaceful resolution.

Liz, the Doctor's companion, accompanies him to a Silurian base. In the base, they find a hibernating Silurian being revived. Further complicating matters, a government official, the Permanent Under-Secretary, arrives to evaluate the situation at the research center. He is unconvinced by the Brigadier's warnings about subterranean threats and denies a request for reinforcements. This undermines the cautious approach advocated by the Doctor, who believes the Silurians are not inherently hostile and deserve a chance at peaceful co-existence.

Despite the Doctor's efforts, an associate of the Doctor name Quinn is killed by a Silurian and the Brigadier, influenced by Doctor Quinn's associate, Dawson, who says they must be stopped, presses forward with military action, dismissing the possibility of negotiation. The Doctor, in a desperate attempt to avert bloodshed, goes back into the caves to warn the Silurians of the impending attack. He himself is captured and imprisoned alongside Baker. Just as the Brigadier's forces prepare to move in, the episode ends with the Doctor trapped, the Silurians ready to defend their territory, and the humans poised for invasion, setting the stage for a potentially devastating clash.

Act 1

The Doctor attempts to establish communication with a Silurian, but the creature flees upon hearing a car approaching, prompting the Doctor to warn of impending human destruction. Simultaneously, Major Baker, feigning injury, incapacitates Sergeant Hart and escapes the sickbay, determined to find saboteurs in the caves. He navigates the subterranean passages using his map but falls into a bubbling liquid and the Silurians capture him. The Brigadier, informed of Baker's escape, dismisses the need for a search, confident Baker will be found during the planned cave invasion. The Doctor returns, confirming Quinn's death by a Silurian, but insists the creatures are intelligent and only attack in self-defense, urging a cautious, scientific approach over military intervention. He expresses his intent to return to the caves to learn more, with Liz insisting on accompanying him.

Act 2

The Doctor and Liz follow Quinn's map into the caves, discovering a recently fired cartridge and Baker's notebook near a dangerous bubbling liquid, confirming Baker's presence. They locate a hidden Silurian doorway, which the Doctor opens using Quinn's device. Inside the Silurian base, they find Baker imprisoned and witness the revival of a hibernating Silurian, leading the Doctor to theorize this process explains the power losses. Baker urges them to escape and inform the Brigadier. Meanwhile, Permanent Under-Secretary Masters arrives at the research center, unimpressed by the Brigadier's reports of 'monsters' and denying his request for reinforcements. Lawrence, the center director, dismisses the Brigadier and the Doctor as exaggerating the situation. The Doctor confronts Lawrence about a new power failure, then seeks out the Brigadier. Masters explicitly refuses the Brigadier's request for more troops, citing a lack of credible evidence for 'monsters in caves,' forcing the Brigadier to commit to invading with his existing forces. The Doctor attempts to dissuade the Brigadier, offering his alternative of peaceful contact.

Act 3

Dawson's dramatic entrance and testimony about Quinn's death at the hands of the Silurians—despite Quinn's cooperation—shatters any remaining doubt for the Brigadier and Masters. Dawson vehemently declares the need to destroy the Silurians before they destroy humanity. This testimony directly counters the Doctor's arguments for peaceful coexistence, prompting the Brigadier to affirm his plan for a morning invasion, with Masters' full agreement. Realizing that human leaders will not listen to reason, the Doctor, in a desperate attempt to avert bloodshed, resolves to warn the Silurians himself. He enters their control room and attempts to explain the impending human attack, but the Silurians, led by the elder and impulsive junior, misinterpret his intentions. They capture him and imprison him in an adjacent cage to Baker. The Doctor, now a captive, attempts to explain to the Silurians that the approaching humans are soldiers who will only attack if provoked, emphasizing his desire for peace on what he now calls 'their planet.' The elder Silurian asserts the planet's ancient ownership by their species. Simultaneously, the Brigadier's forces begin their advance into the caves, but immediately encounter an inexplicable, newly formed wall, leaving them disoriented and potentially trapped.
