The Ambassadors of Death Part 1

When Mars Probe 7 returns to Earth silent after seven months, the Doctor and UNIT must investigate strange signals and a secretive organization to prevent a deadly extraterrestrial plot from succeeding, with the lives of the astronauts and the Earth at stake.

Space Control monitors the approach of Recovery 7, piloted by Van Lyden, as it attempts to link with the silent Mars Probe 7. Speculation abounds regarding the fate of the astronauts, Frank Michaels and Joe Lefee, who had previously sent reports from Mars. Despite a successful docking, contact is lost with Recovery 7 after Van Lyden reports hearing something from the Mars Probe, followed by a piercing noise.

The Doctor, accompanied by Liz Shaw, becomes interested in the situation after hearing the strange noise at the UNIT laboratory. Realizing the significance of the sound, he convinces the Brigadier to investigate the situation at Space Control. Despite initial resistance from Professor Cornish, the Doctor insists a message is embedded in the strange noise.

The Doctor’s persistence leads to the discovery that the signal originates from an abandoned warehouse near Space Control. UNIT forces, led by the Brigadier, raid the warehouse, encountering armed resistance as they attempt to capture those responsible for transmitting the signal. The team inside the warehouse sends a final transmission and trigger a self-destruct device, destroying their equipment before UNIT can fully secure the location.

Back at Space Control, the Doctor struggles to gain cooperation from Doctor Taltalian for computer analysis while continuing to decode the messages. It is revealed that Athens Observatory has reported a dangerous solar flare build-up threatening the lives of the astronauts in Recovery 7 and Mars probe. Facing the imminent threat of the solar flare, Cornish tries to contact Recovery 7 but communication has been lost. The episode ends with the Doctor seeking full co-operation to unravel the mystery and attempt to prevent disaster in space and on Earth.

Act 1

The episode opens at Space Control, where Professor Cornish and Doctor Taltalian oversee astronaut Van Lyden's critical mission to rendezvous with Mars Probe 7, which has been mysteriously silent for seven months. Anxiety hangs heavy in the air regarding the fate of astronauts Frank Michaels and Joe Lefee, whose last reports from Mars were followed by an inexplicable silence. Van Lyden successfully docks Recovery 7 with the probe, a moment of relief quickly shattered. He reports hearing an unusual sound just before a piercing, high-frequency noise erupts, severing all communication with Recovery 7 and causing distress among Space Control personnel. Simultaneously, in the UNIT laboratory, the Doctor and Liz Shaw are occupied with TARDIS repairs when they, too, experience the disruptive sound. The Doctor, with his unique perception, immediately identifies the noise as more than mere static, recognizing it as a structured, albeit coded, message. He wastes no time in convincing Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart of the sound's significance, prompting their urgent departure for Space Control. There, the Doctor faces initial resistance from Professor Cornish, who dismisses his claims. However, the Doctor's unwavering conviction is dramatically vindicated when the strange, high-frequency signal repeats, confirming his assertion that it is a deliberate transmission. This pivotal moment forces Cornish to concede and grant the Doctor the necessary resources—recordings and computer time—to begin decoding the enigmatic message, effectively launching the investigation into the heart of the mystery.

Act 2

With the Doctor now granted access to Space Control's resources, he immediately begins decoding the mysterious signals, asserting that the repeated transmission was a 'reply' and demanding worldwide triangulation to pinpoint its origin. Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart mobilizes UNIT's global network, coordinating various observatories and radio services to track the high-frequency impulses. The triangulation efforts quickly narrow the source down to Earth, specifically London. Further local triangulation by UNIT forces pinpoints an abandoned warehouse seven miles from Space Control. Acting swiftly, the Brigadier leads a UNIT contingent to raid the identified warehouse. Inside, Carrington, Grey, and Collinson operate sophisticated communications equipment, confirming they are the source of the transmissions. A fierce gunfight erupts between UNIT soldiers and Collinson's men, escalating into hand-to-hand combat. Despite the resistance, the Brigadier manages to capture Collinson after a tense standoff. However, while the skirmish distracts UNIT, Carrington orders Grey to trigger a self-destruct device, destroying their transmitting equipment and crucial evidence. Carrington and Grey then make their escape through a window, leaving UNIT with a captured operative but no immediate answers about their motives or the full scope of their operation. This act transforms the abstract mystery into a tangible confrontation, highlighting UNIT's operational capabilities and the elusive nature of the antagonists.

Act 3

Following the raid on the warehouse, the Doctor returns to Space Control, frustrated by the destruction of the transmitting equipment. He immediately faces new bureaucratic hurdles, struggling to gain full cooperation from Doctor Taltalian for essential computer analysis of the decoded messages. Professor Cornish intervenes, compelling Taltalian to assist the Doctor, underscoring the urgency of the situation. However, the narrative swiftly introduces a far more immediate and existential threat. Rutherford reports that Houston has also lost contact with Recovery 7, deepening the mystery surrounding the astronauts' fate. Simultaneously, Athens Observatory reports a dangerous, massive solar flare building up, expected to erupt within the next twenty-four hours. This catastrophic event poses an imminent threat to the lives of the three astronauts—Van Lyden, Frank Michaels, and Joe Lefee—trapped in space. Professor Cornish attempts to bring Recovery 7 down via remote control, but discovers the capsule is locked on manual, rendering their efforts futile. Desperate, Cornish broadcasts repeated warnings to Recovery 7 about the solar flare, urging them to unlock manual control, but receives no response. The episode concludes on a high-stakes cliffhanger, with the astronauts facing certain death from the solar flare and the Doctor urgently seeking complete cooperation from all parties to unravel the remaining mysteries and avert an impending disaster both in orbit and potentially on Earth.
