Inferno Part 1

When a dangerous drilling project unleashes a mysterious force, the Doctor and his companion Liz must unravel the truth behind a series of brutal murders and prevent a catastrophic disaster that threatens to engulf the entire planet.

On the Isle of Grain, the Doctor and Liz Shaw arrive at a research complex where Professor Stahlman is drilling deeper into the Earth than ever before. Stahlman's ambition blinds him to the dangers, while the project's executive director, Sir Keith Gold, grows increasingly concerned. The Doctor, eager to test the TARDIS console using the facility's nuclear reactor, senses impending doom as a maintenance worker, Slocum, is exposed to a strange green ooze during a repair. This exposure transforms Slocum into a violent, monstrous being, leading to a series of murders.

The situation escalates when Gold brings in an experienced oilman, Greg Sutton, to assess the project's safety, further infuriating Stahlman, who sees Sutton as an unwelcome intrusion. As Slocum's monstrous transformations continue, the Doctor attempts a dangerous trial run with the TARDIS console, siphoning power from the nuclear reactor. The experiment goes awry, sending the Doctor into a brief, terrifying limbo, and triggering a power surge in the facility. Meanwhile, the Brigadier and UNIT investigate the murders, with suspicion falling on the transformed Slocum. They struggle to maintain order as the complex descends into chaos.

The Doctor, along with Liz, recognizes the connection between the power surge, Slocum's transformation, and the drilling project. They try to warn Stahlman of the imminent danger, but he dismisses their concerns, determined to continue the drilling at all costs. Despite Stahlman’s recklessness, Gold orders the shield to be lowered when smoke starts pouring of the drill head. Sutton, sensing the extreme danger, tries to dissuade Stahlman's assistant, Petra, from entering the drill head, but she remains loyal to Stahlman and his mission. As the episode concludes, Stahlman and his team struggle to control a jammed coolant valve in the increasingly unstable drill head, setting the stage for a potentially catastrophic eruption.

Act 1

The narrative opens at the Isle of Grain research complex, introducing Professor Stahlman's ambitious deep-drilling project, "Inferno," and the underlying tension with Executive Director Sir Keith Gold. The Doctor arrives, ostensibly as an observer but with a hidden agenda to test the TARDIS console using the facility's nuclear power. A routine maintenance task by worker Slocum turns sinister when he is exposed to a mysterious green ooze emanating from a pipe in the drill head, causing him intense pain and a visible physical transformation as his skin turns green. Gold, increasingly concerned by Stahlman's reckless disregard for safety, takes a decisive step by bringing in experienced oil consultant Greg Sutton to assess the project's dangers, a move that further antagonizes the possessive Stahlman. The situation escalates dramatically when Slocum, now visibly changed and driven by an unknown force, commits a brutal murder using a superheated wrench, drawing the immediate attention of UNIT and the Brigadier. The Doctor, investigating the strange circumstances of the murder and the wrench's abnormal heat, begins to suspect a deeper, more dangerous phenomenon connected to the extreme energy of the drilling. This act efficiently establishes the core characters, the central scientific endeavor, the mysterious and violent threat, and the initial high stakes of the unfolding crisis.

Act 2

Act Two intensifies the conflicts and accelerates the mysterious threats. Greg Sutton arrives, immediately clashing with Professor Stahlman, who views him as another unnecessary advisor hindering his project. Sutton's attempts to flirt with Petra are rebuffed, highlighting her unwavering loyalty to Stahlman. The Doctor, also dismissed by Stahlman as an "expert," proceeds with his own critical experiment: siphoning power from the nuclear reactor for a trial run of the TARDIS console. Simultaneously, Slocum's transformation deepens, his skin turning green, hands growing hairy, and behavior becoming feral. In a critical sequence, Slocum infiltrates the Nuclear Reactor Switch Room and manipulates a lever, causing a massive power surge. This surge directly interferes with the Doctor's TARDIS experiment, sending him into a terrifying state of "limbo" before Liz manages to cut the power, narrowly saving him. The power surge triggers a "Red One emergency" at the drill head, with smoke pouring out and coolant controls jamming, pushing the project to the brink of catastrophe.

Act 3

The final act of the episode plunges the complex into full-blown crisis, driven by Professor Stahlman's unyielding determination and the escalating danger from the deep-drilling project. Smoke pours ominously from the drill head, prompting Sir Keith Gold, recognizing the dire "Red One emergency," to override Stahlman's authority and order the blast shields lowered. Stahlman, however, remains stubbornly focused on continuing the drill, dismissing the Doctor's urgent attempts to warn him about the direct connection between the earlier nuclear power surge, Slocum's monstrous transformation, and the inherent dangers of the drilling itself. The Brigadier reports a second murder, this time of a UNIT soldier, further confirming the ongoing and lethal threat posed by the transformed Slocum. Inside the increasingly unstable drill head, Petra reports that the critical coolant controls have jammed due to intense heat, creating an immediate and severe risk of an eruption. Greg Sutton, recognizing the extreme peril and Stahlman's blind ambition, tries desperately to dissuade Petra from re-entering the dangerous area, but her unwavering loyalty to Stahlman compels her to follow his reckless orders. The episode concludes with Stahlman and a technician frantically struggling to free the jammed coolant valve, leaving the fate of the project and potentially the entire planet hanging precariously in the balance on a tense cliffhanger.
