Inferno Part 5
As a drilling project unleashes a terrifying force from the Earth's core, the Doctor must convince skeptical authorities of the impending global catastrophe and find a way to stop the Earth from dissolving in a fury of expanding gasses.
A drilling project, led by the possibly mad Director Stahlman, penetrates too deep into the Earth's crust, unleashing a mysterious and dangerous force. Technicians flee as the central control room is rocked by explosions. Stahlman, seemingly unfazed by the heat, heads towards the drill head while Greg prepares to check the main valve and coolant reserve. The Doctor expresses concern and attempts to intervene, but Stahlman knocks Greg unconscious in the drill head area. The Doctor helps Greg escape. Blast doors seal, trapping Stahlman and others inside near the drill head. Attempts to repair the situation from the control room prove futile as the computer breaks down and the severity of the situation escalates. Seismic disturbances are reported across the country, and the authorities order an evacuation, abandoning those at the drilling site.
The Doctor warns that the Earth is doomed. However, the remaining personnel are divided, some embracing despair and others clinging to duty. Greg, desperate to escape, clashes with the Brigade Leader, who insists on following orders. The Doctor reveals the existence of a parallel world and his ability to travel there using a device needing the facility's nuclear reactor for power. He explains that this other world is on the verge of a similar catastrophe because of their drilling project, but he may be able to get there in time to stop the disaster from happening in that dimension. He demonstrates the device, proving its capabilities, but the Brigade Leader remains skeptical.
Meanwhile, those trapped near the drill head are not dead. Stahlman, having undergone a monstrous transformation, communicates with the control room, urging them to raise the heat shield. Ignoring the Doctor's warnings, Williams and the Brigade Leader comply, releasing Stahlman and other transformed beings. The transformed beings cut off the humans and corral them. Benton is captured and transformed. As chaos erupts, the desperate survivors are trapped, facing the imminent destruction of the Earth. Gold, traveling to the facility, has been double-crossed by Patterson who follows Stahlman's orders to orchestrate a breakdown far from the site. In response, Gold demands that Patterson turn around to make their way back to the drilling complex.
Events in This Episode
The narrative beats that drive the story
The narrative commences with the catastrophic "Penetration Zero" event, an explosion that rocks the Central Control room and sends technicians fleeing in panic. Amidst the chaos, Director Stahlman exhibits an unsettling indifference to the extreme heat, a precursor to his eventual transformation. Greg Sutton, attempting to contain the escalating emergency, is brutally attacked by Stahlman with an iron bar, highlighting the Director's descent into madness. Despite the Doctor's efforts to intervene and help Greg escape, blast doors seal, trapping Stahlman and several technicians inside the highly dangerous drill head area. Back in Central Control, the situation deteriorates rapidly as the computer systems completely break down. The gravity of the crisis is underscored by reports of massive seismic disturbances across the country. London authorities, rather than offering aid, order an immediate evacuation of the surrounding area, effectively abandoning the remaining personnel at the drilling site to their fate. The Doctor delivers a grim, inescapable prophecy: the Earth itself will dissolve in a fury of expanding gases within a matter of weeks or even days. This pronouncement sparks a profound division among the survivors; Greg, driven by a desperate will to live, clashes fiercely with Brigade Leader Stewart, who rigidly adheres to military orders and duty. The brief, violent appearance of a transformed technician, Bromley, who is only temporarily incapacitated by the Doctor's quick thinking, serves as a chilling preview of the monstrous threat unleashed. As despair mounts, Greg attempts to convince Doctor Williams to abandon her post and join him in a desperate bid for escape, illustrating the stark choices forced upon those left behind.

With the Earth's doom seemingly sealed, the Doctor reveals the existence of a parallel world and his ability to travel there using his TARDIS console, powered by the facility's nuclear reactor. He explains his intention to prevent a similar catastrophe in that dimension, offering a glimmer of hope, albeit not for their immediate predicament. Despite Brigade Leader Stewart's skepticism, the Doctor demonstrates the console's capability by briefly dematerializing into the future, proving his extraordinary claims. Meanwhile, a transformed Director Stahlman communicates from the sealed drill head, urgently demanding the heat shield be raised. Ignoring the Doctor's vehement warnings that doing so would unleash further horror, Williams and Stewart comply, releasing Stahlman and other monstrous, green-skinned beings into Central Control. These creatures swiftly cut off the humans' escape routes, corralling them. Benton is captured, dragged towards Stahlman, and undergoes a horrifying, rapid transformation into one of the creatures, a chilling demonstration of the enemy's power. The Doctor, acting decisively, pulls a wire from the computer console, closing a blast door to contain the immediate threat, effectively sacrificing Benton but securing the remaining survivors in Stewart's office. Trapped and facing an immediate, monstrous threat, the Doctor's radical solution to save another world now becomes known to all, but its utility for their own survival remains uncertain.

Concurrently with the escalating crisis at the drilling complex, a critical external subplot unfolds, introducing a new dimension to the unfolding catastrophe. Gold, a high-ranking official, is chauffeured away from the facility, engrossed in financial news, unaware of the full extent of the unfolding disaster. His journey is abruptly disrupted when he realizes his chauffeur, Patterson, has deliberately deviated from the planned route. Under sharp questioning, Patterson confesses he is acting on secret orders from Director Stahlman, who instructed him to drive Gold far from the complex and stage a breakdown. This act of sabotage was intended to prevent Gold from returning to the Ministry, where he had successfully secured ministerial authority to suspend the drilling project. Gold, now armed with the Minister's full backing, comprehends the depth of Stahlman's treachery and his desperate attempts to continue the drilling. Asserting his authority, Gold furiously orders Patterson to immediately turn the vehicle around and return to the complex with utmost speed, threatening severe repercussions if he fails. The return journey is fraught with peril, culminating in a near-collision with oncoming headlights, a stark reminder that the chaos and danger are not confined to the drilling site but extend across the entire landscape. This sequence establishes a crucial external force now racing towards the complex, potentially offering a means of intervention or introducing further complications to the already dire situation faced by the trapped survivors.
