The Mind of Evil Part 5

The Doctor must stop the Master from launching a missile controlled by a machine that feeds on evil thoughts, all while trapped in Stangmoor Prison which is now under the Master's control, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

The Doctor and Jo find themselves imprisoned at Stangmoor Prison, where the Master, with the help of the corrupt Mailer, is planning to launch a deadly missile. UNIT, led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, becomes aware of the situation when they spot the Doctor and Jo waving from a prison window during an aerial reconnaissance. The Brigadier deduces that the Master has taken over the prison to use as a base for his missile launch.

Inside the prison, the Master forces the Doctor to help him control a mysterious machine that amplifies evil. He threatens to kill Jo if the Doctor doesn't cooperate. The Doctor, while seemingly compliant, looks for an opportunity to thwart the Master's plans. Meanwhile, Captain Yates, who was captured earlier, is held hostage but manages to escape and arm himself.

The Brigadier devises a plan to infiltrate the prison. He decides to use an underground passage and a "Trojan Horse" tactic, disguising UNIT soldiers as delivery personnel to gain entry. The assault on the prison begins, with UNIT forces facing resistance from the prisoners who are under Mailer's control. The Doctor temporarily disables the evil-amplifying machine, buying UNIT some time, but knows it won't be long before it reactivates.

As UNIT battles to gain control of the prison, Mailer attempts to escape, taking the Doctor and Jo as hostages. The Brigadier and his troops fight their way through the prison, facing heavy fire. Benton, recently recovered from an injury, leads an underground assault team. The Brigadier confronts Mailer, determined to rescue the Doctor and Jo. UNIT successfully storms Stangmoor Prison, overcoming the prisoners and mercenaries under the Master's command. Although the immediate threat of the missile launch is averted, the Master's whereabouts remain unknown, leaving the Doctor and UNIT to anticipate his next move.

Act 1

The Doctor and Jo navigate the immediate aftermath of the Keller machine's disappearance, attributing its retreat to Mailer's concentrated evil. They attempt an escape from Stangmoor Prison, encountering Barnham, who joins their desperate bid for freedom. Their presence is inadvertently revealed to UNIT during an aerial reconnaissance when they wave to a helicopter, an act observed by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. This sighting becomes the crucial piece of intelligence, allowing the Brigadier to deduce the Master's use of Stangmoor as a missile base. Inside the prison, Mailer engages in a tense phone call with the Master, expressing frustration over the rogue machine and demanding the Master's return from the missile hangar. The Master, initially resistant, concedes, revealing Captain Yates as his captive and a potential hostage. Mailer's subordinates recapture the Doctor, Jo, and Barnham. The Doctor attempts to reason with Mailer, exposing the Master's manipulative nature, but Mailer remains committed to his own self-interest, rejecting the Doctor's offer of assistance. This sequence firmly establishes the Doctor and Jo's precarious imprisonment, the Master's overarching missile threat, Mailer's corrupt complicity, and UNIT's dawning awareness, setting the stage for external intervention.

Act 2

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart develops a strategic plan to infiltrate Stangmoor Prison, combining an underground passage with a 'Trojan Horse' tactic, disguising UNIT soldiers as delivery personnel. Simultaneously, within the prison, the Master corners the Doctor, coercing him into controlling the volatile Keller machine by threatening Jo's life. Under this immense pressure, the Doctor devises an ingenious, if temporary, solution: an electrical coil designed to disrupt the machine's beta rhythms and inhibit its movement. He successfully deploys the device, temporarily neutralizing the machine and averting immediate danger, though he acknowledges its intelligence will soon overcome the impediment. As the Doctor and Jo return to their cell, UNIT finalizes its preparations. Sergeant Benton, having discharged himself from hospital, insists on joining the assault and is assigned to lead the underground team. Concurrently, Captain Yates, held captive by the Master, cunningly feigns unconsciousness, breaks free from his bonds, disarms a guard, and secures a pistol, positioning himself to act independently within the prison. This act meticulously builds the internal and external pressures, showcasing the Doctor's intellectual struggle against the Master and UNIT's methodical approach to a dangerous infiltration.

Act 3

The UNIT assault on Stangmoor Prison commences with precision, as the Brigadier, disguised as a delivery driver, leads the 'Trojan Horse' van through the main gate. Soldiers emerge, swiftly neutralizing the gate guards and establishing an initial foothold. UNIT forces advance deeper into the prison, encountering armed resistance from Mailer's prisoners and mercenaries. A fierce firefight erupts in the courtyard, with both sides sustaining casualties. The Brigadier, demonstrating decisive leadership, uses a megaphone to declare the prison under military control, then quickly dispatches a sniper who targets him. Inside their cell, the Doctor and Jo hear the escalating sounds of battle, recognizing the imminent danger and the potential for Mailer to retaliate against hostages. As UNIT gains ground, reinforcements arrive, and the Brigadier, determined to rescue the Doctor, pushes forward. Faced with the overwhelming UNIT advance and the collapse of his control, Mailer, in a desperate bid for escape, enters the Doctor and Jo's cell and takes them hostage, threatening their lives to ensure his safe passage out of the besieged prison. This climactic sequence brings the external and internal conflicts to a head, culminating in a direct hostage situation.
