Colony In Space Part 3

When a mining company's arrival threatens a human colony's existence, the Doctor must expose the company's deceitful tactics involving faked monsters and rescue his companion Jo, while preventing a deadly conflict between the colonists and the ruthless corporation.

On a remote planet designated for colonization, tensions escalate as the Interplanetary Mining Corporation (IMC) arrives, claiming mineral rights to the same territory. Captain Dent, leading the IMC forces, clashes with Governor Ashe, who insists the planet is rightfully theirs. The Doctor arrives amidst this dispute, quickly uncovering IMC's underhanded methods to scare off the colonists, including the use of a robot disguised as a monster.

The situation worsens when the colony's power supply fails, jeopardizing their very survival. The Doctor manages to restore power, but his companion, Jo Grant, is captured by IMC while investigating their spaceship for evidence of the deception. Dent uses Jo as leverage, demanding the Doctor retract his accusations before an Adjudicator arrives to settle the dispute. Jo is imprisoned near a booby-trap, a sensitive explosive charge deliberately set to look like a mine, and guarded.

Winton, a colonist, escapes IMC captivity with the help of Caldwell, an IMC miner who is growing uneasy with Dent's ruthless tactics. Caldwell reveals the planet's rich duralinium deposits, the true reason IMC is determined to seize control, even if it means manipulating or even killing colonists. Caldwell urges Winton to evacuate the colony, warning that even the Adjudicator may be corruptible.

Ignoring Ashe's pleas for diplomacy, Winton rallies the colonists for a direct assault on IMC's spaceship to rescue Jo and drive them off the planet. The Doctor, recognizing the colonists' desperation and the futility of their planned attack, reluctantly agrees to help them devise a better strategy and joins Winton in infiltrating the IMC ship. While the colonists engage the guards, the Doctor and Winton manage to reach Dent. Dent reveals the message that the Adjudicator is indeed on their way. During the commotion, Jo escapes with help from local primitives who kill her guard. She meets up with the Doctor and Ashe and the threat of war is averted. The stage is set for the arrival of the Adjudicator, who will ultimately decide the fate of the colony and expose IMC's crimes.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor successfully neutralizing the Interplanetary Mining Corporation's (IMC) robotic 'monster,' exposing their deceitful tactics to scare off the colonists. This initial victory is short-lived as the colony faces a critical power breakdown, threatening their very existence. While the Doctor works to restore power, the IMC spaceship makes a dramatic landing, bringing Captain Dent into direct confrontation with Governor Ashe over mineral rights. Dent dismisses the colony's claims, asserting IMC's superior mineral rights, and proposes calling an Adjudicator—a process Winton, a colonist, immediately distrusts as a stalling tactic. Amidst this escalating territorial dispute, Jo Grant, the Doctor's companion, ventures to the IMC ship to gather evidence of their deception. She is captured by IMC forces, providing Dent with a powerful bargaining chip. Dent then uses Jo's captivity as leverage, demanding the Doctor retract his accusations of IMC's underhanded tactics before the Adjudicator arrives. This development transforms the initial land dispute into a high-stakes rescue mission, with Jo's life hanging in the balance, significantly raising the personal stakes for the Doctor and the colonists. The act establishes the ruthless nature of the IMC and the immediate peril facing the colony, both from the environment and the corporate aggressors.

Act 2

Following Jo's capture, the Doctor successfully restores power to the colony, temporarily averting an immediate environmental crisis, but the threat to Jo remains paramount. Dent reveals Jo's imprisonment near a booby-trapped explosive, emphasizing the dire consequences if his demands are not met. Jo, along with Winton, attempts to escape the primitive dwelling where they are held. Winton manages to break free, aided by Caldwell, an IMC miner who expresses growing unease with Dent's ruthless methods. Caldwell reveals the true extent of the planet's value—rich duralinium deposits—and IMC's unwavering determination to seize control, even at the cost of colonist lives. He warns Winton about the potential corruption of the Adjudicator, urging the colonists to evacuate. This revelation serves as a critical turning point, shifting the colonists' perspective from passive waiting to active resistance. Ignoring Ashe's pleas for diplomacy, Winton rallies the colonists for a direct, albeit risky, assault on the IMC spaceship to rescue Jo and expel the corporation. The Doctor, recognizing the futility of a direct, uncoordinated attack, reluctantly agrees to assist Winton, aiming to devise a more strategic approach. He then seeks out Caldwell, appealing to his conscience to facilitate Jo's release from within the IMC ranks. Caldwell, swayed by the Doctor's arguments and his own moral compass, confronts Dent, demanding Jo be brought back to the ship, setting in motion a chain of events that leads to Jo's escape with the unexpected intervention of local primitives who kill her guard.

Act 3

With the colonists determined to attack, the Doctor, recognizing the suicidal nature of a frontal assault, reluctantly agrees to help Winton devise a more effective strategy, aiming to minimize casualties and secure Jo's release. He also advises Winton to watch Norton, hinting at an internal saboteur. As the colonists prepare for their coordinated diversion, the Doctor and Winton, disguised in IMC uniforms, infiltrate the IMC spaceship. Their infiltration is successful, despite a brief confrontation with Morgan, which triggers an alarm but is quickly neutralized by supporting colonists. Inside the control room, the Doctor and Winton confront Captain Dent, demanding to know Jo's whereabouts. Dent claims Jo has vanished and that he cannot contact her guard, Allen, whose demise at the hands of the primitives is unknown to him. Caldwell corroborates Dent's claim of Jo's disappearance, adding a layer of uncertainty. With Dent and Morgan subdued, Winton asserts control over the IMC bridge, demanding the surrender of their guards, thereby averting the immediate threat of a massacre and taking a crucial step towards reclaiming the colony's autonomy. The Doctor, leaving Winton to manage the IMC personnel, immediately departs with Ashe to search for Jo in the Primitive ruins, where she was last seen. The act concludes with the colonists having gained a significant tactical advantage, but Jo's fate remains unresolved, setting the stage for the next phase of the conflict and the impending arrival of the Adjudicator. The immediate threat of a direct, bloody confrontation is averted, replaced by a strategic victory and a renewed search for Jo.
