The Daemons Part 4

The Doctor must stop the Master from controlling Azal, the last of the Daemons, whose power could enslave a village and potentially destroy the planet, while evading capture by the Master's cult.

In "The Daemons - Episode Four," the Doctor faces a dire situation as the Master attempts to harness the power of Azal, the last of the Daemons, for his nefarious purposes. The episode opens with the Doctor urgently working to get a heat exchanger operational to penetrate a heat barrier surrounding the village, while the Master is shown in the church cavern, attempting to command Azal. Jo, trapped in the Cloven Hoof guest room, escapes to aid the Doctor, while UNIT soldiers Yates, Benton, and Hawthorne are stuck in the bar.

The Master's interactions with Azal reveal his ambition to rule Earth through the Daemon's power, but Azal questions his motives and hints at the Doctor's continued existence. A surge of heat emanates from the church, a sign of Azal's presence, impacting the village and prompting Jo's movements. The Doctor rushes to complete his device, while the Brigadier and Osgood assist, facing technical difficulties and time constraints. The tension escalates as Azal threatens the Master, reminding him of the fate of Atlantis and the potential destruction of Earth.

Meanwhile, Bert, the landlord, acts on the Master's orders, attempting to eliminate the Doctor, who narrowly escapes an ambush. He is forced to leave Osgood and the Brigadier behind to face the puzzle of “feedback phasing.” Benton, Hawthorne, and Yates try to figure out what to do next. Yates and Jo reunite in the caverns before the Master’s cult can get them.

The Master, seeking to bolster his control over Azal, convenes a coven for a full summoning ceremony. As the Doctor returns to the village, he's captured by villagers manipulated by the Master and tied to a Maypole, accused of being a witch. Just before the villagers set him ablaze, Miss Hawthorne intervenes, using her knowledge of local lore to convince them of the Doctor's superior magical abilities. Benton provides well-placed ‘magic’ from his silenced pistol to help sell the act.

In a climactic confrontation, Miss Hawthorne and Benton work together to outmaneuver the villagers and Bert. The Doctor, using a combination of Bessie, Benton's marksmanship, and Hawthorne's influence gains the upper hand. The episode concludes with Benton apprehending Bert, setting the stage for a final showdown with the Master, who is actively summoning Azal to do his bidding.

The episode is fraught with tension, showcasing the Master's ruthless ambition, the Doctor's ingenuity, and the bravery of his companions. The episode emphasizes the vulnerability of the villagers to manipulation and the importance of clear thinking in the face of impending doom. The combination of scientific problem-solving and local folklore creates a unique atmosphere of suspense and intrigue.

Act 1

The episode opens with a palpable sense of urgency as the Doctor, alongside UNIT's technical team, labors intensely to operationalize a critical heat exchanger. This device is their only hope of penetrating a formidable heat barrier that isolates the village, a race against time to prevent an impending catastrophe. Simultaneously, deep within the ancient confines of the church cavern, the Master engages in a perilous attempt to command Azal, the last and most formidable of the Daemons. Azal, a being of immense power, not only questions the Master's ambition and motives but also pointedly reveals the Doctor's continued existence, shattering the Master's illusion of control and introducing a significant complication to his nefarious plans. Meanwhile, Jo Grant, resourceful and determined, ingeniously escapes her confinement in the Cloven Hoof guest room, driven by an unwavering resolve to aid the Doctor. Her escape is set against the backdrop of UNIT soldiers Yates, Benton, and Miss Hawthorne, who remain frustratingly confined to the bar, their efforts to intervene thwarted. A powerful and unsettling surge of heat, a direct and terrifying manifestation of Azal's raw power, emanates from the church, engulfing the village and underscoring the immediate and escalating danger. The Doctor, having left Osgood and the Brigadier to grapple with the complex and temperamental device, departs for the village, unknowingly heading directly into a trap. The Master, anticipating his arrival, has already dispatched Bert, the local landlord, with orders to eliminate the Doctor, setting the stage for a deadly confrontation and marking a critical turning point in the unfolding crisis.

Act 2

Immediately upon his departure, the Doctor's journey to the village is fraught with peril as Bert, acting under the Master's sinister command, ambushes him on the road. The Doctor, displaying characteristic ingenuity, narrowly evades Bert's gunfire, abandoning his motorbike and seeking refuge within the dense, concealing woods. This forced retreat effectively isolates him from his UNIT support, leaving him vulnerable and cut off. Concurrently, within the shadowy depths of the church cavern, Jo and Yates, having reunited amidst the growing chaos, find themselves trapped. They are forced into a precarious game of hide-and-seek, evading the Master's cult members who are actively preparing for a full and potent summoning ceremony, a ritual designed to fully harness Azal's power. Back in the Cloven Hoof bar, Sergeant Benton finds himself increasingly isolated, struggling with intermittent radio communication, unable to reach either the Brigadier or the Doctor. This communication breakdown highlights the team's fractured state and the escalating disarray. At the heat barrier, Osgood and the Brigadier encounter persistent technical difficulties with the complex heat exchanger, further delaying their ability to provide crucial aid to the embattled Doctor. The Master, having been informed of the Doctor's escape from Bert, swiftly orchestrates a "suitable welcome" for his adversary within the village. As the Doctor eventually makes his way back into the heart of the community, he is swiftly captured by the manipulated villagers, who, under the Master's sway, accuse him of witchcraft. He is then brutally tied to a Maypole, facing an immediate, life-threatening ordeal at the hands of the very people he seeks to protect, marking a significant escalation of personal danger and a dire turning point in the narrative.

Act 3

The narrative reaches its dramatic peak as the Doctor, bound tightly to the Maypole and surrounded by faggots of wood, faces imminent immolation. The villagers, whipped into a frenzy by Bert and the Master's insidious influence, prepare to burn him alive as a witch, a chilling display of mob mentality. Simultaneously, in the ancient and foreboding church cavern, the Master commences his full, elaborate summoning ceremony, invoking Azal with the fervent assistance of his coven. This ritual, designed to fully command Azal's immense power, raises the stakes for the entire planet, threatening global enslavement or destruction. Just as Thorpe lights a brand, poised to ignite the pyre, Miss Hawthorne, demonstrating unexpected courage and wisdom, dramatically intervenes. She challenges the villagers' misguided perceptions, using her deep knowledge of local folklore to re-frame the Doctor not as a malevolent black witch, but as the powerful and benevolent "Wizard Qui Quae Quod," a figure of superior magical ability. Sergeant Benton, strategically positioned, provides crucial "magical" assistance, using his silenced service pistol to shatter a distant streetlamp and spin a weathercock atop the church tower, lending undeniable credibility to Hawthorne's audacious claims. This combined and ingenious effort allows the Doctor to swiftly gain the upper hand. He commands Bessie, his sentient roadster, to subdue Bert, who is then promptly apprehended by Benton. The immediate, life-threatening peril to the Doctor from the manipulated villagers is neutralized, a testament to quick thinking and teamwork. However, the episode concludes with the ominous image of the Master continuing his powerful summoning of Azal, leaving the ultimate, existential threat unresolved and setting the stage for the final, climactic confrontation in the series.
