The Time Monster Part 5

The Doctor and Jo travel to Atlantis to prevent the Master from obtaining the crystal of Kronos, while navigating the complexities of Atlantean politics and ancient mysteries.

The Doctor and Jo materialize in Atlantis, where they encounter the Master, who seeks to reclaim the crystal of Kronos, a powerful artifact with time-manipulating abilities. The Master plans to use this power to dominate Atlantis and fulfill an ancient prophecy. Meanwhile, the Atlantean king, Dalios, and his council are grappling with the consequences of bringing back Kronos, fearing it will lead to the downfall of their civilization. As the Doctor and Jo try to stop the Master, they must also navigate the intricate politics of Atlantis, including the ambitions of Hippias and the enigmatic Queen Galleia. The Doctor and Dalios form an alliance to prevent the Master from obtaining the crystal, which is guarded by the fearsome minotaur. Ultimately, the Doctor and Jo succeed in foiling the Master's plans, but not before significant revelations about the nature of time, power, and the responsibilities that come with it.

Act 1

The narrative opens with Jo awakening in the TARDIS, hearing the Doctor's disembodied voice from the time vortex. Guided by the TARDIS, Jo follows instructions to activate an "Extreme Emergency" protocol, successfully materializing the Doctor back into the control room. Their reunion is brief, as the TARDIS then directs them towards Atlantis. Simultaneously, in Atlantis, King Dalios presides over a council grappling with a looming crisis. Hippias, a prominent council member, advocates for invoking "divine power" (Kronos) to alleviate the land's suffering, directly opposing Dalios's somber warnings about Kronos's destructive past. Dalios recounts the historical devastation Kronos brought upon Atlantis, emphasizing the curse rather than any blessing. Amidst this tense political debate, the Master executes a dramatic entrance, materializing his TARDIS directly into the Atlantean plaza. He presents himself as an emissary from the gods, specifically bringing Kronos back, using Krasis, a former Atlantean who has seen "the Mighty One," to lend credibility to his claims. Despite Dalios's initial skepticism, the Master's theatrical arrival and Krasis's testimony compel the King to grant him a private audience, effectively setting the Master's plan to acquire the crystal of Kronos into motion. The Doctor and Jo, guided by the TARDIS's time sensor, are now on a direct course to the Master's location in Atlantis, poised to intervene.

Act 2

Following their arrival in Atlantis, the Doctor and Jo's TARDIS materializes in the plaza, leading to their immediate apprehension by Atlantean guards on Krasis's command. Krasis identifies them as enemies of the Master, but Hippias intervenes, ensuring their delivery to King Dalios rather than immediate execution. In a private audience, the Master attempts to assert his dominance over Dalios through a hypnotic display, claiming mastery over Kronos and demanding obedience. Dalios, however, proves resilient and wise, rebuffing the Master's attempts at fascination. He dismisses Kronos as a god and challenges the Master's claims, forcing the Master to retreat, temporarily foiled. Concurrently, Dalios dispatches Jo to Queen Galleia, while he engages the Doctor in a crucial conversation. Dalios, recognizing the Doctor's philosophical depth, confides his profound fears regarding Kronos, recounting the ancient devastation and the crystal's indestructible nature. This shared understanding of the existential threat solidifies an alliance between Dalios and the Doctor, uniting them against the Master's ambitions. Meanwhile, Queen Galleia, intrigued by the Master's aura of power, sends her handmaiden Lakis to him with the single, potent word: "Kronos," signaling her willingness to engage with his plans, setting the stage for a more complex web of political intrigue and personal ambition.

Act 3

Queen Galleia, now in league with the Master, engages in a clandestine meeting where she offers her consent to his acquisition of the crystal of Kronos. Their agreement outlines a future where Dalios remains king in name, but Galleia and the Master will wield true power, eventually ruling Atlantis together. Galleia reveals the crystal's location deep beneath the temple and discloses the existence of a formidable guardian. Unbeknownst to them, Jo, now adorned in Atlantean attire, overhears their conversation from an adjoining room, learning about the crystal and its protector. Simultaneously, the Doctor receives critical information from Dalios about this guardian: the Minotaur, once a respected councillor, cursed by Kronos with a bull's head and eternal life, now bound to guard the crystal. Back in Galleia's chambers, the Master and Galleia decide to exploit Hippias, deeming his life expendable, by sending him to confront the Minotaur and retrieve the crystal. Jo, having pieced together the perilous plan, attempts to warn Dalios and the Doctor but is thwarted by Crito, who obstructs her path to the King. Witnessing Krasis leading Hippias towards the Temple of Poseidon, Jo makes a desperate decision. She instructs Lakis to find the Doctor and Dalios while she follows Hippias. Jo pursues Hippias into the temple's undercroft, attempting to warn him, but Krasis ambushes her from behind, forcefully pushing her through the wooden door, trapping her inside with Hippias and the fearsome Minotaur, setting up a perilous cliffhanger.
