The Three Doctors Part 1

When a cosmic ray research experiment goes awry, a scientist, Doctor Tyler, vanishes, prompting the Doctor and Jo to investigate, leading them to encounter a powerful entity from a universe of antimatter.

The screenplay opens with Doctor Tyler, a scientist, investigating a strange occurrence involving a cosmic ray research balloon that has crash-landed near a wildlife sanctuary. The event leads to the disappearance of a local man, Arthur Ollis. The Doctor and his assistant, Jo, arrive at the scene and soon find themselves entangled in a complex situation involving UNIT, a top-secret organization led by Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart. As they delve deeper, they discover that the incident is connected to a powerful entity that has traveled from a universe of antimatter, using a time bridge to scan the Earth. The entity, which can take various forms, including 'Gel guards,' poses a significant threat, and the Doctor must use his knowledge and resources to stop it. The plot thickens with the arrival of another version of the Doctor, who has been sent from the Time Lords to assist. Together, they work to understand and counter the entity's plans, navigating through time and space.

Act 1

The episode commences with Doctor Tyler, a cosmic ray researcher, investigating the crash site of his experimental weather balloon near a wildlife sanctuary. This seemingly innocuous event takes a sinister turn when local man Arthur Ollis vanishes without a trace upon approaching the payload. The Doctor and his assistant, Jo Grant, are called to UNIT Headquarters, where Tyler reports Ollis's disappearance and presents alarming data: cosmic ray readings indicating a phenomenon traveling faster than light. The narrative intensifies as Tyler, while developing a crucial X-ray plate, also vanishes, leaving behind an image of Ollis's terrified face and a strange, crackling red and blue energy. Returning to UNIT, the Doctor and Jo witness this same energy materialize from a drain, causing the Doctor's beloved car, Bessie, to disappear. The Doctor, connecting these disparate events, deduces that a powerful, hostile organism is specifically targeting him. The threat becomes overt and immediate when an army of impervious "Gel guards" materializes outside UNIT HQ, launching a full-scale assault that overwhelms military defenses, forcing the protagonists into a desperate retreat. This act establishes the core mystery, escalates the danger from subtle disappearances to open conflict, and firmly places the Doctor at the center of the unfolding crisis.

Act 2

As UNIT's conventional weaponry proves utterly useless against the relentless Gel guards, the Doctor, Jo, and Sergeant Benton are compelled to seek refuge within the TARDIS. However, the hostile entity's power extends to immobilizing the time machine, trapping them. Faced with an unprecedented threat, the Doctor activates an extreme emergency SOS, reaching out to his own kind, the Time Lords. On their distant, high-tech planet, the Time Lords are grappling with an even larger, existential crisis: a powerful, unidentified force from a universe of antimatter is draining vital cosmic energy through a black hole, threatening to unravel the very fabric of space-time. Recognizing the Doctor's critical role in combating this threat, the Time Lord President makes the drastic decision to override the sacred First Law of Time, which forbids a Time Lord from meeting his past or future selves. Consequently, an earlier incarnation of the Doctor, the Second Doctor, materializes inside the TARDIS. His arrival introduces a new dynamic, marked by bickering with his future self and initial confusion for Jo and Benton, yet he swiftly confirms the personal nature of the entity's pursuit, solidifying the idea that the Doctors themselves are the primary targets.

Act 3

Despite the escalating cosmic threat and the Time Lords' desperate intervention, the two Doctors continue their characteristic bickering, hindering their ability to strategize effectively. Observing this lack of cooperation from their distant vantage point, the Time Lords, in a further act of desperation, decide to summon the *earliest* incarnation of the Doctor, hoping his authoritative presence will bring order. The First Doctor then appears on the TARDIS scanner, seemingly trapped within a geometric pyramid structure. With his unique perspective, he quickly identifies the hostile entity not merely as an organism, but as a "time bridge," a conduit between realities. Dispensing with pleasantries, he issues a direct and urgent command to his future selves: "cross it." This pivotal revelation provides the bickering Doctors with a clear, albeit perilous, objective. The episode concludes on a high-stakes cliffhanger, as the Doctors, having received their instructions, prepare to disconnect the TARDIS force field, signaling their intent to follow the First Doctor's enigmatic command and venture into the unknown dangers of the time bridge.
