Planet of the Daleks Part 6

The Doctor and his allies navigate a Dalek invasion on the planet Spiridon, thwarting their plans for intergalactic domination and finding a way to escape.

The Doctor, along with his companions Taron, Codal, Rebec, Jo, and Latep, find themselves on the planet Spiridon, where they encounter a Dalek army. The Daleks, led by the Dalek Supreme, are using the planet's unique properties to become invisible and plan to invade other solar planets. The Doctor and his allies devise a plan to stop the Daleks by using a bomb to flood the cavern with ice, putting the Daleks into suspended animation. Meanwhile, Latep and Jo discover a spaceship that can take them back to Skaro. As the Doctor and his companions prepare to leave, they reflect on their actions and the consequences of war. The episode culminates with the Doctor and Jo escaping in the TARDIS, while Latep returns to Skaro with a newfound sense of hope.

Act 1

The episode opens with the Doctor, Rebec, Taron, and Codal making a desperate escape from a Dalek control room, pursued relentlessly through the corridors of the Dalek base. Daleks quickly seal off upper levels, systematically driving the group deeper into the complex, specifically towards the arsenal. The Doctor explains their objective: to use a single bomb not to destroy the entire Dalek army, but to halt its immediate activation. Concurrently, a critical development unfolds as Dalek command identifies the Doctor as their greatest enemy and orders his capture alive for interrogation by the newly arriving Dalek Supreme. Separated from the main group, Jo and Latep witness the landing of the Dalek Supreme's advanced spaceship. Latep, recognizing its sophisticated design, believes he can pilot it, presenting the Thals with an unexpected opportunity for escape back to Skaro. This discovery introduces a significant moral dilemma: Latep fears that knowledge of a potential escape route might diminish the Thals' resolve and willingness to take necessary risks in their fight against the Daleks, as they had previously considered their mission a suicide endeavor. This initial act establishes the immediate peril, outlines the Doctor's primary strategy, and introduces both the ultimate antagonist and a crucial element for the allies' survival and return.

Act 2

With the barricade in place, the Doctor attempts to secure the cooling chamber controls, but finds no immediate solution, confirming the Daleks will soon reactivate. The Dalek Supreme arrives, asserting total command and immediately escalating the threat by ordering the invasion of all solar planets to commence and the shutdown of the refrigeration unit, which would reanimate the frozen Dalek army. The Supreme demonstrates ruthless authority by exterminating a subordinate Dalek for perceived failure, underscoring the high stakes. Meanwhile, Jo and Latep descend a shaft, preparing to rejoin the main group. As the temperature rises in the arsenal cavern, Daleks begin to stir. The Doctor and Codal locate a critical crevice in the cavern wall where the bomb can be placed. However, a reawakening Dalek knocks the bomb from the Doctor's grasp, sending it into the midst of the still-sluggish Dalek army. The Doctor bravely retrieves the bomb, and Codal quickly repairs its damaged timing mechanism. The Doctor then outlines his full plan: strategically placing the bomb to weaken the cavern walls, allowing the immense pressure of the surrounding ice to burst through, flooding the chamber and returning the Daleks to suspended animation for centuries. Jo and Latep rejoin the group, contributing to the effort by using Latep's bomb to destroy the barricade, creating a temporary diversion. The Doctor places the repaired bomb, initiating the countdown.

Act 3

Following the bomb's apparent failure, a sudden and powerful rumbling begins as the "ice volcano" erupts. Liquid ice bursts through the cavern wall, engulfing the entire Dalek army and fulfilling the Doctor's objective in a dramatic, unexpected manner. In the control room, the Dalek Supreme's aides report total inundation and loss of contact with all Dalek units. With controls failing and ice advancing, the Supreme is forced to order self-destruct and abandon the planet, confirming the immediate victory for the Doctor's allies. Outside, the Thals—Latep, Rebec, Taron, and Codal—gather at the Dalek spaceship, their means of returning to Skaro secured. Codal expresses his gratitude to the Doctor with a respectful salute. The Doctor seizes this moment to impart a crucial lesson to Taron, urging him not to glamorize the war when recounting their adventures, but to speak of the fear and the fallen, ensuring their people understand the true, grim cost of conflict. Latep then asks Jo to return to Skaro with him, but Jo, though fond of him, chooses to return to her own world, Earth, marking her departure from the Doctor's travels. As Latep departs in the spaceship, the Doctor and Jo spot the enraged Dalek Supreme, who has arrived to find his ship gone. They make a final, desperate dash for the TARDIS, narrowly escaping the Supreme's attack and the re-activating squirt plants. The Dalek Supreme, though defeated on Spiridon, defiantly declares that the Daleks are only delayed, not vanquished, setting the stage for future encounters. Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor offers Jo the chance to see countless other worlds, but she firmly chooses to return home to Earth, concluding their shared adventure.
