The Green Death Part 2

When a colliery accident traps a miner and his wife, the Doctor and UNIT must navigate a complex web of sabotage, conspiracy, and a mysterious green substance threatening the town.

The story begins with a mining accident at a colliery, where a lift cage falls, trapping miner Bert and his wife Jo. The Doctor and UNIT, led by Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, work to rescue them. As they investigate, they discover that the accident was caused by sabotage and a mysterious green substance is spreading, causing death and contamination. The Doctor and his team face opposition from the mine's management, particularly Director Stevens, who seems to be hiding something. The Doctor and UNIT must find a way to rescue Bert and Jo, stop the spread of the green substance, and uncover the truth behind the sabotage and Stevens' actions. Along the way, they encounter Professor Jones, a scientist who may hold the key to understanding the green substance. The story unfolds as a tense, action-packed thriller, with a strong focus on science, technology, and social commentary.

Act 1

The episode opens with the immediate aftermath of the lift cage accident, trapping miner Bert and his wife Jo deep underground. The Doctor, with UNIT's Brigadier and local engineer Dave, improvises a dangerous brake to prevent a catastrophic fall, but the system jams, leaving the miners stranded. The investigation quickly uncovers the death of another miner, Dai, whose body glows with a mysterious green substance, introducing a new, deadly threat. The rescue efforts are hampered by the urgent need for specialized cutting equipment. Director Stevens of Global Chemicals, who operates the mine, actively obstructs UNIT's attempts to acquire the equipment and attempts to silence his subordinate, Fell, about the true nature of the accident. The Doctor confirms the accident was deliberate sabotage after finding a removed cotter pin, shifting the narrative from a simple rescue to a complex conspiracy. Simultaneously, Jo and Bert, desperate for escape, decide to abandon the cage and seek an emergency shaft in the dangerous west seam, introducing a new objective for the trapped pair.

Act 2

With Stevens' obstruction confirmed, the Brigadier and Dave depart to find cutting equipment in a distant town, while the Doctor, recognizing Stevens' deception, enlists Professor Jones to help infiltrate Global Chemicals. Jones orchestrates a diversion with a protest, allowing the Doctor to bypass security and enter the facility. The Doctor confronts Stevens, who maintains his obstructive facade, leading the Doctor to an empty shed, falsely claiming the equipment is unavailable. Meanwhile, the Brigadier and Dave, by sheer luck, acquire the necessary cutting gear. Back at the colliery, preparations for the descent are made. The Doctor, Dave, and two others enter the second cage, ready to rescue. Deep within the mine, Bert and Jo encounter the glowing green substance directly. Bert touches it, suffering immediate painful burns, and begins to glow, indicating infection. Jo, desperate, leaves him to seek help. The Doctor and Dave, descending, find Dai Evans fully luminous and dead, then locate Bert, who is now infected. The Doctor sends Bert to the surface for treatment and, against advice, commits to continuing alone into the dangerous, infected mine to find Jo.

Act 3

The Doctor plunges deeper into the treacherous mine, now isolated and following Jo's faint trail. The environment grows increasingly hostile, marked by an unsettling green light that permeates the darkness and a pervasive, foul smell, confirming the widespread presence and insidious nature of the mysterious, deadly substance. He soon encounters Bert, who is now visibly glowing from the infection and wracked with severe pain, a grim testament to the green death's rapid progression. The Doctor quickly assesses Bert's critical condition, recognizing the immediate threat to his life, and dispatches him to the surface for urgent medical attention, prioritizing his immediate survival. Despite the escalating danger and the unknown fate of Jo, the Doctor resolutely continues his solo pursuit, explicitly forbidding anyone from following him into the perilous depths. He underscores the extreme and unique hazards of the situation, highlighting the profound personal risks he now faces alone. The episode concludes with the Doctor isolated and vulnerable, pressing forward into the unknown, facing both the physical dangers of the collapsing mine and the insidious, contagious threat of the green death, with Jo's survival hanging precariously in the balance. His determined advance into the heart of the contamination sets the stage for the next phase of the crisis, emphasizing the Doctor's unwavering commitment in the face of overwhelming odds.
