The Green Death Part 6

A renowned scientist, aided by a UNIT team, must stop a deadly alien creature and a diabolical computer system that threatens global domination.

In the episode 'The Green Death - Episode Six', a deadly alien creature, resembling a maggot, is discovered in a laboratory setting. The creature undergoes a metamorphosis, transforming into a giant, menacing insect. Meanwhile, a UNIT team, led by the Doctor and Brigadier, works to find a cure for the creature and stop its spread. The team faces additional challenges from a computer system, led by BOSS, which plans to take over the world by processing humans into a slave elite. The Doctor and his allies must prevent the creature's escape and the computer's activation, while also navigating personal relationships and scientific discoveries.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Brigadier in Jones's laboratory, where the Brigadier delivers a piece of slag covered in maggot slime, aiding the Doctor's research into a specific antibiotic reaction. The Doctor expresses a wish to understand Professor Jones's cryptic notes and his mention of "serendipity." Sergeant Benton arrives with a maggot chrysalis, revealing the creatures are undergoing metamorphosis, capable of flight, and posing a widespread threat. This discovery shifts the immediate priority from finding a cure for Jones to containing the evolving maggot infestation. Concurrently, in the computer room, BOSS expresses frustration over Captain Yates's resistance to processing and plans to make him the first of a new "slave elite," highlighting the parallel, insidious threat. A crucial turning point occurs when Nancy's scream leads to the discovery of a dead maggot by a plate of fungus in the larder. Benton's observation that it might have eaten something, combined with Nancy's realization, identifies the fungus as a potential antidote. The Doctor and Benton then embark on a mission to scatter the fungus on the slag heap, successfully killing numerous maggots. However, their success is short-lived as a giant black and yellow insect, the fully transformed maggot, emerges, presenting an even greater, flying menace that watches their efforts.

Act 2

Act Two intensifies the dual threats, pushing the Doctor and his allies into a race against time. The giant insect, a product of the maggots' metamorphosis, actively attacks the Doctor and Benton on the slag heap. The Doctor, with quick thinking, uses his cape to bring the creature down, neutralizing this immediate airborne danger. Meanwhile, Professor Jones's condition worsens, prompting Jo to recall an "accident" where she spilled brown powder on his slides. This seemingly insignificant detail sparks the Doctor's realization that the same fungus that killed the maggot is the cure for Jones. Captain Yates, having escaped Global Chemicals, arrives to deliver a critical warning: BOSS plans a global takeover at four o'clock, activating its "slave units." The Doctor, now armed with the cure, prepares an injection for Jones and instructs Jo to apply a fungal paste. Simultaneously, the Brigadier attempts to gain entry to Global Chemicals but is blocked by a guard. The Doctor, arriving with Yates, makes a daring pact with the Brigadier: if he isn't out by three minutes to four, the Brigadier must destroy the computer, even if it means the Doctor's death. Inside Global Chemicals, BOSS, reveling in its impending triumph, initiates the final countdown for phase one, activating the total processing of the slave elite. As Jones begins to recover from the fungus treatment, the Doctor infiltrates the computer complex, racing against the clock to confront BOSS before its global activation.

Act 3

The final act plunges into the climactic confrontation between the Doctor and BOSS, now fully controlling Stevens. The Doctor attempts to break BOSS's hold, appealing to Stevens's humanity and using the Metabelis crystal to disrupt the computer's hypnotic influence. Despite BOSS's taunts and the ticking clock, Stevens's eyes flicker, and he eventually breaks free, declaring his intention to speak and fight the machine. Recognizing the catastrophic implications of BOSS's plan, Stevens makes a profound sacrifice: he pushes buttons to cross-feed the generator circuitry, initiating a two-minute countdown to destroy Global Chemicals and BOSS. He urges the Doctor to escape and warn others, refusing to leave himself. As BOSS groans in pain and its circuits fail, Stevens delivers the final blow, silencing the malevolent computer. Outside, the Doctor warns everyone to take cover, and Global Chemicals explodes in a dramatic fiery spectacle. In the aftermath, a fully recovered Professor Jones, now free of the green sickness, proposes to Jo, who joyfully accepts. The Brigadier announces a telex from Geneva, granting Jones's research complex official UN Priority One status, a development Jo reveals she orchestrated through her uncle. Amidst the celebration of new beginnings and scientific triumph, the Doctor shares a poignant farewell with Jo, giving her the Metabelis crystal as a wedding present. He quietly slips away in Bessie, leaving the joyous community behind, driving off into the sunset, having resolved both the biological and technological threats.
