The Ark in Space Part 4

The Doctor and his companions must stop the Wirrn, an alien species, from using the Ark's cryogenic chamber to advance their own species, while also confronting the traitorous Noah and saving humanity.

In 'The Ark in Space - Part Four', the Doctor and his companions, including Sarah, Harry, and Vira, find themselves on the Ark, a massive generation ship, where they encounter the Wirrn, an insectoid alien species. The Wirrn, led by their leader, aim to use the Ark's cryogenic chamber to hatch their young and advance their species by assimilating human knowledge. The Doctor and his friends soon discover that Noah, a human who has been taken over by the Wirrn, is secretly working with them. As tensions rise, the group devises a plan to stop the Wirrn by using the transport ship's power source to electrify the cryogenic chamber's bulkheads, preventing the Wirrn from accessing it. However, their plan is complicated by Rogin's betrayal, which leads to his death. The Doctor and his companions eventually succeed in thwarting the Wirrn's plans and escape the Ark. The story concludes with the Doctor, Harry, and Sarah beaming down to Earth to repair the matter transmitter, while Vira sets out to return humanity to their home planet.

Act 1

The Doctor, Sarah, and Vira confront a Wirrn in the power stacks, where the alien leader reveals its species' true intentions: to use the cryogenic sleepers as hosts for their hatchlings, assimilating human knowledge to become an advanced technological species. The Wirrn leader, possessing Dune's knowledge, dismisses Vira's genetic impossibility claim, stating it already holds advanced human science. The Doctor quickly recognizes the imminent threat as a pupa begins to split. Back in the control room, Harry expresses concern for the missing group, while Rogin remains cautious. The Doctor, Sarah, and Vira arrive, explaining their encounter with Noah/Wirrn. The Doctor then proposes a desperate plan: electrify the cryogenic chamber's bulkheads with high voltage power to create an impassable barrier for the Wirrn. The challenge lies in the Wirrn controlling the Ark's main power. Sarah suggests using the transport ship's independent power system, a revelation Rogin confirms with its four granovox turbines. Vira displays the Ark's schematics, showing a connecting ramp to the transport ship. The problem of running a cable through narrow conduits arises, requiring a mechanical runner. Sarah, however, volunteers to squeeze through the conduits herself, despite Harry's objections. The Doctor, recognizing the urgency, accepts her offer. The group divides: the Doctor proceeds to the cryogenic chamber to prepare the wiring, while Sarah, Harry, Vira, and Rogin head to the transport ship to connect the power cable.

Act 2

Under the transport ship, Rogin prepares Sarah for her perilous journey through the narrow conduit, connecting one end of the cable while Sarah must drag the other through to the cryogenic chamber. Harry expresses concern about Sarah navigating the dark, complex junctions, but Vira assures him they will guide her via radio with a conduit plan. As Sarah begins her arduous task, the Doctor works in the cryogenic chamber, attaching cables, briefly interrupted by a Wirrn entering the adjacent Tranquiller room. Sarah struggles through the conduit, communicating her progress and difficulties, including getting stuck. The Doctor, hearing her grunts, employs a harsh, manipulative tactic, verbally abusing her to provoke her into pushing past her physical limits. This psychological pressure works, and Sarah, fueled by anger, manages to pull herself free and emerge into the cryogenic chamber. The Doctor immediately praises her, revealing his deception. Sarah connects the cable, and the Doctor instructs Rogin to switch on the power. The current surges, electrifying the bulkheads and zapping a Wirrn attempting to enter, confirming the plan's initial success. However, the Wirrn leader, speaking through Noah, quickly retaliates by turning the Ark's power back on and issuing an ultimatum: surrender the sleepers, or the oxygen pumps will be shut down, dooming the humans. The Doctor attempts to appeal to Noah's residual humanity, urging him to lead the swarm into space, but Noah claims no memory of Earth. Meanwhile, Harry spots Wirrn attempting to board the transport ship through a funnel. Vira, demonstrating her command, orders a defensive engine blast, successfully repelling the initial assault. The temporary victory is short-lived as a massive Wirrn swarm space-walks around the Ark, breaching the cargo hold and directly threatening the transport ship, forcing the Doctor to order an immediate evacuation and power cut.

Act 3

As the Wirrn swarm breaches the Ark's cargo hold, the Doctor orders Rogin to cut power, set the transport ship on automatic takeoff, and evacuate immediately. Harry notes the ship is "crawling with the brutes" as Rogin prepares to leave. Under the transport ship, the Doctor pulls a module from a strut, intending to manually cut the synestic locks. Rogin, however, intervenes, knocking the Doctor unconscious, declaring it "my job." Rogin then pulls the module from the final strut, detaching the transport ship just as its engines fire. The ship lifts off, flying away from the Ark, seemingly with Rogin still aboard. Back in the control room, Vira and Sarah mourn Rogin, believing him dead. The Doctor then appears, having woken up in a protection hatch, confirming Rogin's sacrifice. He attributes Rogin's bravery, and perhaps something else, to their survival. The console beeps, revealing Space Station Nerva, and a final message from Noah before the shuttle explodes. Sarah realizes the shuttle has blown up. Vira deduces that Noah deliberately neglected to set the rocket stabilizers, ensuring the Wirrn swarm's destruction. The Doctor recognizes this as more than a "vestige of human spirit," a final, redemptive act from Noah that secures mankind's safety. With the immediate threat resolved, Vira declares her intention to return humanity to Earth using the matter transmitter, despite the loss of the transport ship. The Doctor identifies a fault in the transmitter's diode receptors, offering to beam down to Earth to repair it. Sarah and Harry, despite not being explicitly invited, insist on accompanying him, with Harry citing the Brigadier's orders to stick with the Doctor. Vira remains on the Ark, confident that life is returning and soon humanity will reclaim their world. The Doctor, Sarah, and Harry vanish, teleporting to Earth, ready for their next adventure.
