The narrative beats that drive the story
The TARDIS lands on Earth, bringing the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith to Tubney Wood. They immediately encounter anomalies: a trance-like Corporal, a peculiar energy reading, and dry ground despite the smell of rain. Their investigation is interrupted by an attack from mysterious white-suited figures, leading to the Corporal's death by falling off a cliff. Examining the body, they discover a UNIT badge and newly minted, same-dated coins, deepening the mystery. They then find a strange, egg-shaped artifact in a quarry before seeking refuge in the seemingly deserted village of Devesham, which Sarah recognizes. There, they find more new currency in the empty pub. The situation escalates dramatically when the villagers, including the 'dead' Corporal, return in a trance-like state, only to 'activate' at the chime of a clock. The Doctor deduces a connection to the nearby Space Defence Station and leaves Sarah to investigate, intending to contact UNIT. Sarah's subsequent interrogation by the villagers, who appear to be 'testing' her, reveals the true nature of the white-suited figures as androids. Meanwhile, the Doctor infiltrates the Space Defence Station, encountering a blank soldier and overhearing a conversation about a 'random unit.' Sarah returns to the TARDIS, only for it to dematerialize, leaving her stranded. The quarry artifact then opens, releasing a new android that attacks her. Simultaneously, the Doctor, having confronted the suspicious Senior Defence Astronaut Guy Crayford (who believes him an impostor), escapes, only to be cornered and captured by soldiers and androids on the roof of the facility, observed by Sarah. This act establishes the central mystery, introduces the android threat, and leaves both protagonists in immediate, life-threatening danger, separated and isolated.
