The Hand of Fear Part 2

A rogue agent, Sarah, infiltrates a nuclear complex, threatening a catastrophic meltdown, while the Doctor and Carter try to stop her and uncover the secrets behind her actions.

In the screenplay 'The Hand of Fear - Part Two', a dangerous situation unfolds at the Nunton nuclear complex when an infiltrator, Sarah Smith, attempts to cause a nuclear meltdown. Driven by her devotion to Eldrad, a mysterious being whose hand she has found, Sarah's actions are guided by a strange ring that compels obedience.

The story begins with chaos at the Nunton Control Centre as technicians scramble to contain the situation. The Doctor and Carter, arriving from a hospital, become entangled in the crisis. They learn that Sarah, who has locked herself in the reactor's outer chamber, poses a significant threat.

As the Doctor communicates with Sarah, he uncovers that she is under the influence of Eldrad, a being with regenerative capabilities, symbolized by its hand. The Doctor and his companions work to evacuate the complex and prevent a disaster.

In their efforts to stop Sarah and understand the Eldrad entity, they face various challenges, including armed guards, suited teams, and the psychological effects of the ring on those who come into contact with it.

The climax of the story features Driscoll, influenced by the ring, attempting to cause a nuclear chain reaction with Eldrad's hand. The Doctor and Carter intervene, leading to a final confrontation that ends with Driscoll's defeat and the containment of Eldrad's hand.

Throughout the narrative, themes of obedience, free will, and the consequences of playing with forces beyond human control are explored.

Act 1

The Nunton Control Centre descends into bedlam as technicians grapple with an emergency. Sarah Smith, a young woman, has infiltrated the complex and locked herself within the reactor's outer chamber, threatening a nuclear meltdown. The Doctor and Carter arrive from the hospital, quickly becoming embroiled in the crisis. Watson, the director, initially dismisses the Doctor's attempts to intervene, believing Sarah to be a lunatic. However, the Doctor persists, attempting to communicate with Sarah through the control room's comms. He uncovers her repeated declaration that "Eldrad must live," revealing she is under a mysterious influence. Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the jammed security doors, the Doctor devises a dangerous plan to enter the fission room via a cooling duct. Carter, attempting to follow, succumbs to the unseen influence of Eldrad's ring and attacks the Doctor, falling to his death. Undeterred, the Doctor proceeds, confronting Sarah directly. He manages to incapacitate her, causing her to drop the ring, and successfully removes her from the reactor chamber, bringing the immediate crisis to a temporary halt as the reactor status shifts to "Shutdown Proceeding."

Act 2

Following the containment of Sarah and the reactor, the Doctor brings Sarah to the decontamination room. She exhibits complete amnesia regarding her actions and the events within the reactor, showing no signs of radiation exposure despite the lethal levels she endured. Watson and Jackson arrive, demanding explanations. The Doctor reveals Carter's death at Sarah's (or rather, Eldrad's) behest and explains the mysterious Hand's ability to absorb radiation, using it for regeneration. CCTV footage then shows the Hand, which had been left in the fission room, moving autonomously towards the reactor pile. Watson orders Driscoll, a technician, to retrieve the Hand and place it in a sealed container. During this task, Driscoll discovers the small crystal ring Sarah dropped earlier. As he picks it up, the ring glows, and Driscoll's eyes glaze over, indicating he has fallen under Eldrad's influence, mirroring Carter's earlier corruption. The Doctor attempts to use a trance to extract more information from Sarah, who reiterates "Eldrad must live" and speaks of "Kastria." He then realizes Driscoll's silence about the ring signifies his compromise. The Doctor's realization that the ring affects the will of those who touch it marks a critical shift, transforming the crisis from a contained incident to a renewed and more insidious threat.

Act 3

The narrative accelerates into its climax as the compromised Driscoll, now fully under the ring's sway, initiates a new, more direct threat. A guard in the decontamination room hears banging from the safe containing the Hand. Driscoll, having returned, attacks the guard, retrieves the Hand, and begins moving through the complex. Armed guards attempt to stop him, but Driscoll uses the ring to incapacitate them with energy blasts. The Doctor, quickly realizing Driscoll's intent, pursues him through the generator hall. Sirens blare across the complex as the Doctor explains the Hand's potential to trigger a catastrophic chain reaction, even with the reactor shut down. Driscoll, driven by Eldrad's will, makes his way directly to the main reactor door. Despite Watson's orders for a full complex evacuation, the Doctor continues his pursuit, with Sarah following closely behind. Driscoll uses a specialized tool to force open the heavily secured reactor door. As Driscoll steps into the core, poised to enact Eldrad's destructive will, the Doctor quickly pulls Sarah back, shielding her with his body from the imminent danger. The complex's tannoy broadcasts urgent evacuation orders, leaving the Doctor and Sarah at the precipice of an unprecedented nuclear catastrophe.
