Horror of Fang Rock Part 4

When a shape-shifting alien, a Rutan, infiltrates a 19th-century English lighthouse crew, the Doctor and his companions must prevent it from signaling its mother ship and thwart a catastrophic invasion.

The Doctor, Leela, and their companions find themselves trapped in a 19th-century English lighthouse, Fang Rock, which has been infiltrated by a shape-shifting Rutan alien. The creature, disguised as one of the crew members, Reuben, begins to kill the crew one by one, using its ability to transform and electrical powers. The Doctor and Leela soon discover the creature's true nature and its intention to signal its mother ship to invade Earth. They devise a plan to defeat the Rutan by using the lighthouse's lamp and a homemade cannon. As the Rutan mother ship approaches, the Doctor and Leela use the lamp's carbon arc beam, amplified by a diamond, to destroy the ship. However, not before the Rutan unleashes a devastating attack, leaving Leela temporarily blinded. The Doctor and Leela eventually escape in the TARDIS, reflecting on their adventure and the consequences of their actions.

Act 1

The Rutan, still disguised as Reuben, continues its relentless and brutal assault on the lighthouse crew, first electrocuting Vince with a chilling smile, then later killing Adelaide in a similar fashion, escalating the immediate threat to the remaining survivors. The Doctor and Leela, working in the generator room, delve into the alien's nature, with the Doctor explaining the creature's need to study human life patterns for its shape-shifting abilities. Their investigation uncovers a crucial power relay, confirming the Rutan's true objective: to establish a distress beacon and summon its kind. This revelation shifts the narrative from mere survival to preventing a full-scale invasion. The Doctor then confronts the Rutan on the stairs, forcing it to abandon its human guise and revealing its true, glowing green form. Through this tense exchange, the Doctor skillfully extracts vital information: the Rutan is a scout, specially trained in metamorphosis, and Earth is merely a strategic launch point for its species in their desperate, losing war against the Sontarans. The Doctor reveals he has already sabotaged the Rutan's primary signal, but the Rutan maintains its mother ship will still arrive. Faced with the imminent threat of an entire Rutan battle fleet, the Doctor devises a daring, last-resort plan: convert the lighthouse's powerful carbon arc lamp into an amplified energy weapon. This plan, however, requires a large diamond for focusing, prompting Skinsale to volunteer for the perilous task of retrieving one from the deceased Palmerdale. The stakes rise dramatically from a contained alien threat to an intergalactic war threatening Earth.

Act 2

With the Doctor's audacious plan in motion, he and Skinsale descend into the crew room to retrieve the necessary diamond from Palmerdale's body. The Rutan, having been temporarily repelled by the Doctor's earlier use of gunpowder, relentlessly pursues them, its lumbering, spherical form a terrifying presence on the stairs. Skinsale, demonstrating unexpected courage and loyalty, searches Palmerdale's pockets and then his body belt, finally locating a velvet purse containing several diamonds. In a desperate, self-sacrificing act, Skinsale is ambushed and killed by the Rutan as he stoops to retrieve additional diamonds, ensuring the Doctor escapes with the crucial gem. Returning to the lamp room, the Doctor and Leela, now the sole survivors, prepare their makeshift defenses. They ingeniously combine the remaining gunpowder with a modified Schermuly mortar, creating a powerful projectile weapon. Leela, following the Doctor's precise instructions, fires the device, generating a massive flash and explosion that finally destroys the Rutan scout, which deflates into a burst balloon, its threats of invasion echoing even in its death throes. Their immediate triumph is short-lived, however, as a colossal red ball blazes across the sky and hovers over the sea: the Rutan mother ship, confirming the full scale of the impending invasion and raising the stakes to an existential level for Earth. The Doctor, with grim determination, immediately begins modifying the lighthouse's carbon arc lamp, inserting the diamond to create the amplified energy beam, preparing for the ultimate confrontation.

Act 3

With the Rutan mother ship looming menacingly over Fang Rock, the Doctor works with frantic precision, manually aiming the modified lighthouse lamp. He issues urgent instructions to Leela, directing her to run for safety and emphatically warning her not to look back as he prepares to unleash the weapon. As the energy builds to a high-pitched whine, Leela, demonstrating her warrior instincts, briefly ducks into the crew room to retrieve her trusted knife before joining the Doctor outside the lighthouse. The Doctor throws the lamp's power switch, and a devastating beam of energy lances out from the lamp room, striking the Rutan mother ship directly. The alien vessel explodes in a spectacular KaBOOM, showering the area with debris and sending gulls shrieking into the night sky. The intense flash of the explosion temporarily blinds Leela, who, in her pain and adherence to her tribal customs for the "old and crippled," believes her blindness is permanent and implores the Doctor to end her life. The Doctor, with characteristic calm and compassion, reassures her that the effect is temporary, explaining it as pigmentation dispersal caused by the flash. He notes a curious, lasting change: her eyes have transformed from brown to a striking blue. As they prepare to depart in the TARDIS, the Doctor recites poignant lines from "The Ballad of Flannan Isle" by Wilfred Gibson, reflecting on the enduring mysteries of fate and the sea, providing a thematic and melancholic close to their harrowing adventure. The TARDIS dematerializes, leaving the now-silent Fang Rock behind, its purpose fulfilled and its secrets once again shrouded in mist.
