The Invisible Enemy Part 2

As a mysterious mind-controlling organism threatens the crew, the Doctor must fight to save his mind and prevent the alien entity from taking over the planet.

The Doctor and his companions, Leela and Lowe, are dealing with a mysterious mind-controlling organism that has infected several crew members on Titan Base. The organism, referred to as 'the Nucleus,' is trying to take over the Doctor's mind and use him as a host. The Doctor, Leela, and Lowe try to find a cure and escape to the Bi-Al Foundation in the asteroid belt, where they meet Professor Marius, a specialist in extraterrestrial pathological endomorphisms. Marius and his team, including his robotic dog K9, work to understand and combat the virus. Meanwhile, Lowe, who has been infected, becomes increasingly under the control of the Nucleus and works to further its goals, including preparing Titan as a hive for the organism. The Doctor and Leela also discover that Lowe has been infected and that he is working to guard the Nucleus and destroy any rejects. As the situation escalates, the Doctor uses a cloning technique to create a temporary copy of himself and Leela to evade Lowe and his accomplices. Ultimately, the Doctor and his companions must find a way to stop the Nucleus and prevent it from taking over the planet.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor battling a mental assault from the Nucleus, a mind-controlling organism that compels him to destroy. He resists, explaining to Leela that the entity targets intelligence and he must withdraw into a cataleptic trance to fight its influence. Simultaneously, Lowe, already infected and bearing silver scales around his eyes, reveals his allegiance to the Nucleus. He manipulates Safran into preparing Titan as a "hive" and deceives Leela about his own infection, positioning himself to guard the Nucleus and eliminate "rejects." With the Doctor incapacitated, Leela and Lowe transport him via the TARDIS to the Bi-Al Foundation, a specialist medical facility in the asteroid belt. Upon arrival, the Doctor is immediately isolated and subjected to datalysis. Professor Marius, a specialist in extraterrestrial pathological endomorphisms, initially dismisses the Doctor as a "spacenik" until his robotic dog, K9, identifies the Doctor as non-human with two hearts, infected by a "noetic" viral type. The Doctor briefly emerges from his trance to confirm the virus thrives on intellectual activity, explaining its initial attack on the TARDIS computer and Leela's immunity due to her instinctual nature. He identifies Lowe as a carrier, a fact K9 corroborates, having seen Lowe in the eye section. Lowe, meanwhile, continues his mission, infecting the Ophthalmologist at the Foundation, further spreading the Nucleus's influence within the facility. This act establishes the immediate threat to the Doctor, introduces the antagonist's infiltration, and sets the stage for the search for a cure at the Bi-Al Foundation.

Act 2

As the Nucleus's influence expands, Leela attempts to reach the Doctor in the Isolation Ward but faces K9's defensive protocols, highlighting the robot's advanced capabilities. Professor Marius intervenes, accepting Leela as the Doctor's aide, and expresses a desire to scan her to understand her immunity, hypothesizing it might be linked to her intelligence. However, K9's scan yields no unique immunity factor, pushing Marius towards the drastic decision to operate on the Doctor to prevent his complete takeover. Meanwhile, Lowe, the Ophthalmologist, and their newly infected accomplices (Cruikshank and Hedges) systematically infect two more doctors, solidifying their control within the Foundation. Lowe reveals the Nucleus's strategic goals: to guard the Doctor, who hosts the Nucleus, and to infect the facility's "best minds" before migrating to Titan, which is being prepared as a "hive." The Nucleus, sensing a threat to its host, communicates with Lowe, urging immediate action. A shuttle, seemingly attacked by the organism, crashes into the asteroid, creating a diversion that forces Marius and his staff away from the Isolation Ward. This impact inadvertently rouses the Doctor from his coma. Suspecting the crash is a deliberate act, the Doctor begins to research cloning techniques with K9, while Leela bravely confronts Lowe's advancing group, identifying her as a "reject." Marius, Parsons, and the nurse retreat to the Isolation Ward, where the Doctor urgently requests Marius to clone him, arguing it is the only way to protect the entire center from the virus. Despite Leela's initial reluctance regarding the short lifespan of the clone, Marius proceeds, creating carbon imprints of both the Doctor and Leela, setting up a desperate gambit against the encroaching enemy.

Act 3

The newly created clones, Doctor 2 and Leela 2, immediately spring into action. Doctor 2, carrying a piece of equipment, exits the TARDIS and begins his mission, leaving the original Leela to question K9 about the nature and limitations of the Kilbracken cloning technique, which K9 explains as a short-lived carbon copy with uncertain individuation. Simultaneously, the original Doctor, still strapped to the examination couch, continues his intense struggle against the Nucleus, which vocally asserts its purpose and destiny, demanding release. Marius and Parsons physically restrain him, grappling with the ethical and practical implications of contagion. Lowe, now fully in control of his infected team, issues a chilling ultimatum via visiphone to Professor Marius: release the Doctor, or the entire Bi-Al Foundation will be destroyed. This threat underscores the Nucleus's strategic intelligence and its growing power, transforming the localized infection into a full-scale siege. Doctor 2's continued movement past Leela and K9 reinforces his active role in this escalating crisis. The act culminates with the Foundation under imminent threat, the original Doctor a battleground for his mind, and the clones representing the desperate, short-lived hope for survival and victory against the pervasive, intelligent enemy. This segment marks the climax of the immediate conflict within the Foundation, with the fate of the Doctor and the facility hanging in the balance, relying on the unconventional solution of the clones.
