Underworld Part 4

The Doctor and his companions must navigate the treacherous world of the Minyans and their Oracle to prevent a catastrophic explosion, while also confronting their own destinies and the true nature of their quest.

In the screenplay 'Underworld - Part Four', the Doctor, Leela, and their allies embark on a perilous journey to thwart the plans of the Minyans, who seek to harness the power of the Oracle. The Doctor and Leela initially find themselves in a mine, where they team up with Jackson and his crew to evade the Minyan guards. As they progress, they discover that the Minyans are in pursuit of gold cylinders that hold the key to their survival. The Doctor and his companions successfully retrieve the cylinders, but soon realize that they are actually fission grenades with a massive destructive potential. The Doctor must then devise a plan to dispose of the grenades while preventing the Minyans from achieving their goals. Meanwhile, Jackson and his crew prepare to launch their ship, the R1C or Argo, but are faced with a critical decision: to save their own people or risk everything to help the Doctor. The planet Persephone ultimately faces destruction, and the Doctor, Leela, and their companions must fight to survive. Throughout their journey, the characters grapple with themes of power, prophecy, and the consequences of their actions.

Act 1

Act One opens with the Doctor, Leela, Jackson, and his crew in immediate peril, narrowly escaping Minyan guards in the mine as their cart dangles precariously over a crusher. This intense sequence establishes the high stakes and the relentless pursuit by the Minyans. The Doctor, demonstrating his strategic acumen, devises a plan to return to the Oracle: Jackson's crew creates a diversion, engaging the guards in a tunnel, while the Doctor, Leela, and Idas seek an alternative, covert route. This division of forces sets up parallel narratives and escalating tension. Concurrently, within the Minyan Citadel, leaders Ankh and Lakh deliberate their strategy against the intruders, and Herrick, a captive, inadvertently provides a crucial description of the gold cylinders the Minyans are so desperately seeking. The Oracle, a central, enigmatic figure, then produces two such cylinders, which are subsequently given to Herrick. Jackson's crew, having bravely fought the Minyan guards, receives a surprising truce offer. Herrick, now seemingly freed, delivers these cylinders to Jackson, falsely declaring, 'The Quest is over,' creating a premature sense of victory for the Minyans and Jackson's crew. However, the Doctor, Leela, and Idas, having bypassed the main conflict through a hidden grille, infiltrate the Citadel. The Doctor confronts the Oracle directly, challenging its claims of omnipotence and, through clever manipulation, forces it to reveal its *own* set of gold cylinders by inserting a sword into its control unit. This pivotal confrontation exposes the Oracle's deception and secures the true objective. The act concludes with the Doctor, Leela, and Idas escaping the Citadel with these newly acquired cylinders, pursued by guards, only to find themselves immediately trapped by a deliberate rockfall, leaving them in a precarious situation with the true, yet still unidentified, objective in hand.

Act 2

Act Two begins with the Doctor, Leela, and Idas trapped by a rockfall, their escape route sealed, as the Doctor speculates on the true nature of the cylinders Jackson now possesses. Simultaneously, Jackson's ship, the R1C or Argo, prepares for launch, its crew believing they have secured their people's future with the retrieved artifacts. K9, however, detects the absence of the Doctor and Leela from the ship, prompting Jackson to send the robot to retrieve them, underscoring the Doctor's critical role. Within the Minyan Citadel, the leaders, still under the Oracle's deception, order slaves to dig out the Doctor's group, planning their demise. A dramatic turning point occurs when K9 blasts through the rockfall, freeing the Doctor, Leela, and Idas just as the R1C's launch countdown nears its end. The Doctor arrives on the R1C's command deck at the last possible moment, halting the launch. He immediately exposes the devastating truth: the cylinders Jackson holds are not the Minyan race bank but highly volatile fission grenades, a fact chillingly confirmed by K9's urgent analysis, which reveals their immense destructive power. This revelation shatters Jackson's perceived victory and introduces an existential threat to the entire planet. The Doctor, taking swift and decisive action, races off to dispose of the grenades, with Leela and Idas in pursuit. During their desperate escape, Rask, a Minyan guard, intercepts the Doctor, seizes the grenades, and orders the Doctor's execution, demonstrating the Minyans' continued misunderstanding of the true danger they possess. Leela intervenes heroically, saving the Doctor, while Idas, witnessing these events, rallies the terrified Trogs, proclaiming the Doctor their savior and fulfilling an ancient prophecy. The Minyans, still oblivious to the true threat, replace the fission grenades in the Oracle's unit, unknowingly sealing their own fate. The Doctor then gathers the terrified Trogs, leading them to the R1C, insisting Jackson take them aboard. Despite Jackson's vehement protests about low fuel and the added weight, the Doctor reveals the planet's imminent explosion and declares that these Trogs are Jackson's true 'race bank'—the living descendants of their people. Jackson, facing an impossible moral choice, reluctantly agrees, and the R1C begins its desperate ascent, pushing through the planet's surface as the act concludes, leaving the fate of the ship and its passengers hanging precariously.

Act 3

The final act immediately thrusts the narrative into its climax, with the R1C struggling desperately to escape Persephone's gravitational pull. Its engines strain against the added weight of the rescued Trogs, and the crew's initial attempts to gain escape velocity prove insufficient, creating intense suspense as the ship teeters on the brink of disaster. Concurrently, within the Minyan Citadel, the Oracle's alarm blares, signaling a catastrophic error. The Oracle, now realizing the cylinders it holds are the highly volatile fission grenades, frantically demands their disposal or defusal. Ankh and Lakh, however, are powerless to comply, acknowledging the Oracle's self-inflicted predicament and the impossibility of its demands. The Oracle, confronting its own profound failure and impending destruction, accepts its fate. In a moment of grim finality, Ankh removes the top of one of the cylinders, triggering the cataclysm. The planet Persephone explodes in a massive conflagration, a direct and devastating consequence of the Oracle's hubris and the Minyans' misguided, century-long quest. The R1C, caught in the immense shockwave, is violently propelled away from the exploding planet, achieving escape velocity not through its own power but by harnessing the very destruction it sought to avoid. This dramatic escape marks the immediate resolution of the existential threat. In the aftermath, the crew celebrates their survival and the long, arduous journey ahead to Minyos Two. Amidst the jubilation, the Doctor and Leela discreetly depart, their mission complete. Jackson, still processing the profound events, questions the Doctor's earlier actions and his refusal to join them on their centuries-long voyage. The Doctor, in a moment of characteristic enigmatic wisdom, offers a philosophical reflection, drawing a parallel between Jackson's quest and the ancient Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece. He suggests that myths might not just be echoes of the past but prophecies of the future, leaving Leela to ponder the deeper meaning as they enter the TARDIS. K9's final, pragmatic 'Negative' provides a humorous and grounded counterpoint to the Doctor's musings, bringing the narrative to a definitive, yet thought-provoking, close.
