Act 1

Sontaran Commander Stor corners the Doctor and his companions in the Panopticon, demanding to know the Doctor's identity. The Doctor, feigning the role of Lord President, attempts to mislead Stor. Meanwhile, Chancellor Borusa, secretly monitoring the situation, activates a sonic device that incapacitates the Sontarans, creating an opportunity for escape. The Doctor, Leela, and Andred flee, splitting from the other Time Lords. As they navigate the corridors, a Sontaran trooper blocks their path. Leela, demonstrating her combat prowess, uses her knife to exploit the Sontaran's probic vent, killing it. This decisive action allows the group to continue their flight towards the President's Office, where the Doctor believes he has an urgent appointment. Stor, recovering from the sonic attack, issues new orders to his units, prioritizing the capture of the President alive and eliminating his companions. The initial Sontaran invasion establishes immediate danger and forces the Doctor into a reactive, evasive strategy, while Borusa's intervention hints at a complex, possibly allied, agenda.

Act 2

The Doctor and his companions reach the President's Office, only to find Chancellor Borusa waiting, pointing a staser at them. Borusa initially appears hostile, questioning the Doctor's companions and demanding his free will. The Doctor, however, defuses the tension by asserting Borusa's friendship and importance. Outside, Stor and his Sontarans attempt to breach the reinforced door of the office. Recognizing the futility of holding their position against heavy Sontaran artillery, the Doctor proposes evacuating via his TARDIS, suggesting an exit through Borusa's office. He opens the main door slightly to create a diversion, allowing Borusa to lead the others through a secret passage. The Doctor then confronts Borusa, demanding the Great Key, an artifact Borusa initially dismisses as a myth. The Doctor reveals his knowledge of the Matrix and Rassilon's plan, forcing Borusa to admit he holds the Great Key. Simultaneously, outside the office, Sontarans attack Leela's group, resulting in the deaths of Jasko and Ablif, underscoring the high stakes and the cost of the invasion. Borusa finally relinquishes the Great Key to the Doctor, marking a critical shift in their dynamic and the narrative's focus.

Act 3

The Doctor and Borusa escape into the TARDIS, with Sontarans firing upon its exterior. Inside, the Doctor quickly assigns roles: Andred and K9 to control booth seven, and Leela to guide Borusa to the VIP suite. Crucially, the Doctor entrusts the Great Key to Leela, despite Borusa's protests about giving it to an alien, demonstrating his profound trust in her. The Doctor then enlists Rodan, a quasitronics technician, to help repair the TARDIS's primary and secondary stabilizer circuitry, aiming to seal the breach in Gallifrey's forcefield and prevent further Sontaran ships from entering. Rodan, despite her initial unfamiliarity with the TARDIS's unique systems, works diligently. Outside, Stor, frustrated by the TARDIS's defense and Kelner's inability to bypass the forcefield controls, intensifies his demands for reinforcements, still believing the Doctor will lead him to the Great Key. Rodan successfully reconfigures the TARDIS's systems, reactivating Gallifrey's defense screens. This action effectively closes the entry point for the Sontaran battle fleet, securing Gallifrey's immediate perimeter and preventing a full-scale invasion, though Stor remains a threat, determined to obtain the Great Key.
