Act 1

The narrative opens with a jarring confrontation as Farrah, rapier at the Doctor's throat, accuses him of treason, immediately establishing a high-stakes, distrustful atmosphere. The Doctor quickly learns of Prince Reynart's kidnapping, shifting the immediate threat from himself to the larger political crisis engulfing Tara. With the Prince missing and the coronation imminent, the Doctor, demonstrating his characteristic ingenuity, proposes an audacious and unconventional solution: use the android George to impersonate the Prince, thereby thwarting Count Grendel's clear ambition to seize the throne. Farrah and Zadek, initially appalled by the idea of crowning a machine, reluctantly agree, recognizing the dire alternative of Grendel's ascension. This decision reluctantly pulls the Doctor deeper into Taran politics, a realm he initially dismisses as "piffling," only accepting under the direct threat of Farrah's rapier. He immediately sets about repairing George, identifying critical flaws in the android's micro-circuitry and power packs, underscoring the precariousness of their plan. The act further complicates the Doctor's mission with the arrival of K9, who reveals Romana's unexplained absence. Zadek, with his knowledge of local power dynamics, quickly deduces Romana has likely fallen into Count Grendel's hands, transforming the Doctor's reluctant political entanglement into a deeply personal rescue mission. This development raises the emotional stakes significantly, establishing a dual objective: secure the throne for the rightful Prince and save Romana, setting the stage for a multifaceted conflict that now involves both political intrigue and a desperate search.

Act 2

Romana awakens in Count Grendel's laboratory, a captive, immediately facing his manipulative presence and the chilling revelation of his sinister plot. Grendel unveils Princess Strella, Romana's exact doppelgänger, and details his scheme to marry her, claim the throne and her vast estates, then orchestrate her "tragic accident" to solidify his power. When Strella defiantly refuses to cooperate, Grendel ruthlessly threatens to substitute Romana for the Princess, demonstrating his absolute disregard for human life and his unwavering ambition. He then compounds Romana's terror by chaining her in Prince Reynart's cell, using her as a "permanent nurse" and leverage while the Prince suffers from a debilitating fever, highlighting Grendel's cruelty and strategic cunning. Simultaneously, the Doctor, having dispatched K9 to locate Romana at Grendel's castle, proceeds with Farrah and Zadek towards the coronation chamber, navigating treacherous secret plague tunnels with the android George. Their journey is fraught with peril, as they encounter and disable one of Grendel's guards, only to face direct pursuit from a troop of the Count's men. Meanwhile, Grendel, having secured the palace with his own forces, meticulously prepares his staged "spontaneous demonstration" to ensure the Archimandrite offers him the crown. As the Doctor's team struggles to open a hidden passage under fire, the coronation clock strikes the appointed hour. The Archimandrite, under Grendel's subtle but firm pressure, prepares to offer the Count the crown, leaving the Doctor's mission in immediate peril and the fate of Tara hanging precariously in the balance.
