Act 1

Act One establishes the critical stakes and Grendel's elaborate, sinister plot to seize the throne of Tara. Following Romana's kidnapping, Zadek, Farrah, and the Doctor assess Grendel's audacious tactics. Grendel, meanwhile, reveals his full, meticulously planned scheme to Romana and King Reynart, both shackled in a cell. He intends for Romana to marry the King, who will then be promptly assassinated. Grendel, posing as a champion of widows, would then marry the newly widowed Queen Romana, thereby legitimizing his claim to the throne. This revelation immediately clarifies the mortal danger facing both the King and Romana. Concurrently, Grendel summons the Archimandrite, coercing him to perform a wedding ceremony for the 'sick' King, hinting darkly at the King's imminent death and a subsequent second wedding for Grendel himself. This manipulation underscores Grendel's ruthlessness and his control over the kingdom's religious authority. Back at the hunting lodge, the Doctor, Zadek, and Farrah strategize on how to breach Castle Gracht. The Doctor dismisses a prolonged siege, instead proposing a daring infiltration through a hidden watergate, with himself and K9 leading the charge under cover of darkness. This plan sets the stage for direct action. Grendel then attempts to force the true Princess Strella to marry him, but she steadfastly refuses, revealing her awareness that her refusal protects the King's life. Undeterred, Grendel declares Strella 'dispensable' and, in a final act of coercion, threatens Strella's slow, agonizing death to force Romana into marrying King Reynart. Romana, desperate to save the Princess, reluctantly agrees, sealing her fate and intensifying the urgency for the Doctor's intervention.

Act 2

Act Two focuses on the Doctor's perilous infiltration of Castle Gracht and the escalating tension leading up to the forced wedding ceremony. Under the cloak of night, the Doctor and K9 embark in a small boat, navigating the moat towards the old watergate, the Doctor assuring Zadek and Farrah of their success despite the formidable defenses. Zadek and Farrah offer their support, with Farrah providing his rapier, which the Doctor initially dismisses. Inside the castle, Grendel issues his final, chilling instructions to Till and Kurster, emphasizing the need for a flawless ceremony and explicitly ordering Kurster to proceed to the dungeons and 'deal with the Princess' (Strella) at the first sign of trouble, demonstrating his contingency for any interference. The Doctor and K9 reach the watergate, and K9 begins the laborious task of lasering through the thick timber door, the Doctor urging speed as wedding bells begin to toll, signaling the imminent ceremony. Grendel, meanwhile, oversees Romana and Reynart's dressing in wedding finery, taunting them with their impending, tragic 'happiness.' Reynart attempts to strike Grendel, who brutally reminds him of Strella's vulnerability. As the bells peal louder, the Doctor finally breaches the watergate, leaving K9 to guard the boat and prepare for the arrival of Zadek's men. He then navigates the castle's interior. The wedding ceremony commences in Grendel's chambers, with Romana and Reynart kneeling before the Archimandrite. Just as the Archimandrite asks Romana (believed to be Strella) if she accepts Reynart as her husband, the Doctor dramatically bursts into the room, interrupting the proceedings. Grendel, enraged by the Doctor's persistent interference, draws his sword and challenges him to a duel. He even throws the Doctor a sword, initiating a high-stakes confrontation that will determine the fate of Tara.

Act 3

Act Three delivers the climax of the conflict and the immediate resolution of Grendel's plot, while setting up a new, humorous predicament for the Doctor. The intense sword duel between the Doctor and Grendel dominates the early part of the act. Despite Romana's warnings about Grendel's legendary skill, the Doctor demonstrates surprising agility and cunning, parrying Grendel's attacks and eventually disarming him. During the fight, the Doctor directs King Reynart to the gate control lever. Reynart, seizing the opportunity, pulls the lever, causing the main castle gates to open. Outside, Zadek and his men, who have been waiting, immediately charge into the castle, overwhelming Grendel's guards and securing the stronghold. Simultaneously, Kurster, following Grendel's earlier orders, enters Strella's cell with murderous intent. Romana, having followed Kurster, intervenes decisively, incapacitating him with a picture frame. Strella then finishes Kurster with a water jug, ensuring her own safety and revealing Romana's quick thinking and bravery. The Doctor corners Grendel on a terrace, urging him to surrender. Grendel, however, refuses, declaring that Grachts never surrender. He dramatically throws down his sword and dives into the moat, making a daring escape, much to the Doctor's bemused frustration. With the castle secured and Grendel gone, King Reynart expresses profound gratitude to the Doctor, offering him land and riches. The Doctor politely declines, his immediate concern shifting to Romana's whereabouts. Rushing to the dungeons, fearing for Strella's safety, the Doctor discovers Romana and Strella safe and bonding over tapestry work. Reynart and Strella are joyfully reunited, confirming their love. The Doctor and Romana then proceed to Lamia's laboratory to retrieve the crucial Key Segment, with the Doctor playfully tricking Romana about its location. As they prepare to depart Tara, Romana expresses a surprising fondness for the planet, which the Doctor quickly dismisses, only to realize they have forgotten K9. The act concludes with the Doctor calling out over the moat, watching K9's boat drift away, a humorous cliffhanger for their next adventure.
