Act 1

The narrative opens with Romana desperately attempting to save the Doctor, who clings precariously within a deep pit. Lady Adrasta, the planet's ruthless ruler, reveals her true intentions, not to save the Doctor, but to exploit Romana for information about a mysterious 'shell' and the Doctor's knowledge. Adrasta's cruelty is immediately evident as she dismisses the Doctor's life, suggesting he will be consumed by the pit's inhabitant. The Doctor, meanwhile, attempts a perilous climb using an unlikely guide book, only to be thwarted by Adrasta's malicious intervention, sending him plummeting to the bottom where he lands amidst skeletons. Romana is then forced into Adrasta's throne room, where she learns of the creature's deadly nature and is physically coerced into admitting knowledge of the shell. The act culminates with Adrasta ordering the destruction of K9 for his valuable metal, forcing Romana into a desperate bargain to save her robotic companion, setting the stage for her forced cooperation.

Act 2

Following his fall, the Doctor explores the perilous Pit, encountering a strange, pulsating green entity before meeting Organon, a fellow prisoner. Organon, an eccentric astrologer, reveals he was imprisoned for a prophecy about 'visitors from beyond the stars' that Adrasta misinterpreted, creating a shared understanding and an unlikely alliance between him and the Doctor. Meanwhile, Romana, under duress, cleverly uses K9's perceived value to halt his destruction, asserting that K9 holds the information Adrasta seeks and only Romana can operate him, thus preserving both K9 and her own strategic importance. Concurrently, a group of bandits, led by Torvin, learns of Romana's escape and, fearing Adrasta's retribution, devises a plan to ransack Adrasta's palace while her forces are diverted. The Doctor and Organon discover Adrasta's metal monopoly as the source of her power, just as the creature makes a direct, terrifying appearance in their cave, which Organon repels with heat. Romana, in a tense demonstration, uses K9 to stun a guard, proving his capabilities but also solidifying Adrasta's determination to control and exploit both K9 and Romana. The Doctor, intrigued by the creature's 'cerebral membrane,' decides to pursue it, with a reluctant Organon in tow.

Act 3

The final act of this segment accelerates towards a direct confrontation within the dangerous depths of the Pit. Adrasta, now fully aware of the TARDIS's capabilities and its potential to secure her metal monopoly, resolves to eliminate the creature she has long feared, deeming it 'superfluous' in light of her new acquisition. She orchestrates an expedition into the Pit, taking Romana and K9 with her, intending to use K9's firepower against the monster. This move directly converges the two main plotlines, bringing Romana, K9, and Adrasta's forces into the same perilous environment as the Doctor and Organon. As Adrasta's party descends into the labyrinthine mines, sending guards ahead, the Doctor and Organon are also navigating the tunnels, actively pursuing the creature. The tension escalates as the Doctor admits to Organon that while he has a 'plan' to deal with the monster, he has yet to figure out how to apply it, underscoring the immediate and high-stakes challenge they face. The segment concludes with both parties converging in the Pit, setting the stage for an imminent and uncertain confrontation.
