The story begins with the Doctor and K9 on the run from an asteroid that is about to collide with their time machine, the TARDIS. Romana and the Anethans discover the Nimon's 'larder,' a chilling chamber where mummified husks and Anethans in suspended animation reveal the creature's true, horrific feeding method: draining life force. The Co-pilot, having survived his fall, reappears, now trapped with Romana's group, further complicating their desperate situation. This act concludes with both protagonists and their allies fully immersed in the immediate dangers of the Nimon's lair, the stakes dramatically heightened.
