The story begins with the Doctor and K9 on the run from an asteroid that is about to collide with their time machine, the TARDIS. Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and K9 in a perilous situation, their TARDIS on a collision course with a massive asteroid. Through the Doctor's quick thinking and an improvised maneuver, they narrowly escape destruction, though the TARDIS sustains damage. Simultaneously, Romana, separated from the Doctor, finds herself a prisoner on a spaceship piloted by a ruthless Co-pilot. She attempts to turn back for the Doctor but is forcibly subdued and taken to the cargo hold with a group of Anethans, destined as tributes for the monstrous Nimon on the planet Skonnos. On Skonnos, the sinister pact between the Nimon and the scientist Soldeed is unveiled. The Nimon demands regular sacrifices, including hymetusite crystals and living beings, in exchange for advanced technology that will enable Soldeed to build the 'Second Skonnon Empire' and conquer the galaxy. Soldeed, under immense pressure from the Nimon, scrambles to secure the tributes. In the cargo hold, Romana discovers the Anethans' true plight and the secret agenda of Seth, one of the tributes. Seth, though presented as a hero, is a reluctant and fearful figure tasked with destroying the Nimon to free his people. Romana's sonic screwdriver is lost, adding to her vulnerability. The ship eventually reaches Skonnos, and Soldeed presides over the tribute ceremony. Romana boldly confronts Soldeed, questioning the missing crystals and demanding to know the Doctor's whereabouts. The Co-pilot attempts to frame Romana as a space pirate, but Soldeed, recognizing the Co-pilot's incompetence and lies regarding engine repairs, ruthlessly sacrifices him to the Nimon as punishment for endangering the tribute. This act underscores Soldeed's cold ambition and the Nimon's absolute power. Meanwhile, the Doctor, having successfully repaired the TARDIS, tracks Romana and his lost gravitic anomoliser to Skonnos. He materializes directly at the Complex entrance and is immediately captured. Brought before Soldeed, the Doctor quickly deduces Soldeed's technological endeavors, identifies his stolen device, and reveals the presence of a black hole linked to the Nimon. A confrontation ensues, with Soldeed attempting to attack the Doctor, whose anomoliser deflects the energy beam. The Doctor escapes into the Nimon's vast, labyrinthine complex, with Soldeed confident the Nimon will eliminate him. Inside the complex, both the Doctor and Romana's group navigate the shifting corridors. The Doctor uses sticky markers to track his path. Romana and the Anethans discover the Nimon's 'larder,' a chilling chamber where mummified husks and Anethans in suspended animation reveal the creature's true, horrific feeding method: draining life force. The Co-pilot, having survived his fall, reappears, now trapped with Romana's group, further complicating their desperate situation. This act concludes with both protagonists and their allies fully immersed in the immediate dangers of the Nimon's lair, the stakes dramatically heightened.
