Following Romana's abrupt capture, the narrative unfolds across parallel storylines, detailing the Doctor's and Adric's independent efforts to understand their predicament and locate their missing companion. The Doctor continues his exploration of the Great Hall, where he cleverly disables a Gundan robot, extracting a crucial memory wafer that begins to yield fragmented but vital information about a mysterious "gateway" and the Gundan's purpose in a conflict involving ancient "masters" and "slaves." Meanwhile, Adric, attempting to track Romana, struggles with K9's severely malfunctioning mass detection circuits, which render the robot practically useless for navigation and underscore Adric's youthful inexperience and K9's current limitations. On Rorvik's spaceship, Romana endures a painful and coercive process, forced to utilize her time-sensitive abilities to locate the elusive gateway. Despite the duress, she successfully projects a geographical image of the gateway onto a monitor, a breakthrough that electrifies Rorvik's desperate crew, prompting them to immediately prepare an expedition. Concurrently, Rorvik orders his remaining crew, Aldo and Royce, to revive a Tharil from their cargo. Their clumsy, unscientific procedure results in the Tharil's violent reanimation, marked by screams and smoking, yet it revives. He interrogates the Gundan, extracting critical details about the ancient "masters" who originated from the gateway, the "slaves" who engineered the Gundan robots specifically to wage war against them, and the complex nature of the gateway itself, described as "three physical gateways and the three are one." As the Doctor uncovers this vital intelligence, Rorvik's expedition arrives at the same mysterious doorway, leading to a tense and immediate confrontation. Rorvik, recognizing the Doctor's apparent connection to the Gundan's knowledge, imperiously demands the full "recital" of the gateway's secrets. However, just as the Gundan is on the verge of disclosing the ultimate secret of the gateway, an unexpected event occurs: the other Gundan robot, from which the Doctor initially took the memory wafer, reactivates and moves purposefully towards a mirror, abruptly interrupting the revelation. With the secret still partially obscured, Rorvik's crew, now fully aware of the Doctor's involvement, gives chase as he attempts to escape with K9. Simultaneously, back on Rorvik's spaceship, the clumsily revived Tharil fully awakens and rises from the gurney, adding a new, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous element to the escalating chaos, leaving the Doctor and his companions in a precarious position.
