Warrior's Gate Part 4

The Doctor must stop Rorvik's dangerous plan to escape a micro-universe, while navigating time-sensitive slaves and alliances with the Tharils to prevent catastrophic consequences.

The Doctor, Romana, and Adric find themselves trapped in a micro-universe with Rorvik and his crew. As tensions rise, the Doctor discovers that Rorvik is hunting Tharils, time-sensitive beings enslaved on his ship. The Doctor learns that the micro-universe is contracting, threatening their existence. Rorvik plans to escape by blasting through mirrors that lead to his universe using a back blast, which the Doctor knows will be disastrous. The Doctor and Romana form an alliance with Biroc, a Tharil, to stop Rorvik. They devise a plan to short-circuit the ship's power, but ultimately, Romana stays behind with Biroc and K9 to help free the Tharils, while the Doctor escapes in the Tardis. The narrative concludes with the Doctor hoping to have returned to his own universe, while Romana begins a new journey with the Tharils.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Romana trapped in a great hall, under the suspicious gaze of Rorvik and his crew, who believe the Time Lords possess a secret exit from their micro-universe. Rorvik's aggressive posturing is immediately challenged by Romana, who points out his futile tactics. The situation escalates dramatically with the arrival of K9, whose malfunctioning memory wafers initially cause confusion, but quickly reveal a dire warning: the micro-universe is contracting exponentially. The Doctor attempts to explain the catastrophic implications of this dimensional collapse, emphasizing that their only hope lies in cooperation. However, Rorvik remains skeptical, dismissing the scientific explanation as "gobbledygook" and focusing solely on forcing the Doctor to reveal a way out. The Doctor then reveals the true nature of Rorvik's cargo – Tharils, time-sensitive beings enslaved using dwarf star alloy, which is also contributing to the universe's contraction. A pivotal moment occurs when the Doctor communicates with Biroc, a Tharil, through a mirror, receiving the cryptic advice to "Do nothing." This interaction foreshadows a deeper, more complex solution than brute force. As Rorvik grows increasingly impatient, threatening the Doctor's life, Adric intervenes by manipulating the MZ, a dangerous weapon, creating a diversion that allows the Doctor, Romana, and K9 to escape the great hall and reach the relative safety of the TARDIS. Rorvik, now convinced of the contraction, resolves to use a "back blast" from his ship's engines to force a way through the mirrors, a desperate and destructive plan that sets the stage for the escalating conflict.

Act 2

With the Doctor, Romana, and Adric now inside the TARDIS, a brief moment of relief is shattered by the realization of Rorvik's catastrophic plan: to use his ship's warp motors for a "back blast" against the mirrors, which will not only fail but accelerate the micro-universe's collapse. Romana immediately rejects any thought of dematerializing, her conscience bound by the enslaved Tharils still aboard Rorvik's ship. This moral imperative drives the new objective. They quickly formulate a desperate counter-plan: to short-circuit the ship's main power by exposing and grounding a damaged cable near the warp motors. The Doctor, initially intending to go alone, is met with Romana's resolute refusal to let him face the danger by himself, leading to a tense exchange where she asserts her independence and issues orders to Adric, mirroring the Doctor's own authority. Simultaneously, Rorvik initiates his own frantic efforts, ordering the revival of his Tharil cargo. This process is chaotic and violent, with the crew members Aldo and Royce expressing their discomfort and fear. The revival attempts fail, and the power fluctuations draw Rorvik to investigate the damaged cable himself. This sets up a direct confrontation as the Doctor and Romana, having climbed through a hull breach, encounter Rorvik at the very spot they intend to sabotage. Rorvik attacks the Doctor, but Romana, following the Doctor's instructions, successfully shorts the main power line using the Tharil manacles. In the midst of this struggle, Biroc reappears, once again urging the Doctor to "Do nothing," a paradoxical instruction that the Doctor and Romana suddenly grasp, leading them to join hands with Biroc and fade away from Rorvik's immediate grasp, leaving him to rage in futile defiance.

Act 3

Emerging from the immediate danger, the Doctor and Romana stand outside the TARDIS, but the expected reunion takes an unexpected turn. Romana, asserting her autonomy, declares her intention to remain behind, refusing to follow the Doctor's orders. This pivotal moment marks her definitive break from her role as the Doctor's companion, as she states her need to be "her own Romana." Biroc, now fully present, confirms the Tharils' need for a Time Lord, solidifying Romana's new mission. The Doctor, though clearly saddened, accepts her decision, entrusting K9 to her care and expressing his deep respect for her. As the Doctor dematerializes in the TARDIS, glowing red against the building back blast from Rorvik's ship, Romana, Biroc, and K9 return to the gateway, passing through the mirror into a new, monochrome dimension. Behind them, Rorvik's desperate back blast culminates in the catastrophic explosion of both the gateway and his spaceship, bringing a violent end to his tyrannical reign and the immediate threat to the micro-universe. In the monochrome land, Romana, with K9's technical assistance and Biroc's guidance, articulates her new purpose: to use the gateway and time technology to free enslaved Tharils across E-space, embarking on a noble and independent quest. Simultaneously, within the TARDIS, the Doctor and Adric observe the fading E-space image, hopeful that they have successfully returned to N-space, their own universe. The Doctor, reflecting on Romana's choice, expresses profound confidence in her capabilities, affirming her future as a formidable and independent force.
