The Keeper of Traken Part 2

The Doctor and Adric, aided by Consul Tremas, must prevent Melkur's evil influence from destroying the Traken Union, while navigating the complex web of alliances and rivalries among the Consuls.

In the sanctum, the Doctor argues with the Consuls, Kassia and Seron, about executing him and Adric. Kassia demands their execution, citing their connection to Melkur. The Doctor suggests that they should be judged with justice and precision. Meanwhile, Melkur's influence is revealed, and Kassia's obsession with the statue is hinted at. As the story unfolds, Tremas, a Consul, protects the Doctor and Adric, while also investigating high-energy force fields. The Doctor and Tremas analyze readings from a tricorder, which leads them to suspect that the energy emissions are connected to the Source, a bioelectronic system controlled by the Keeper of Traken. The Keeper's role is crucial in maintaining the balance of the Traken Union. Kassia's husband, Tremas, uses his consular privilege to take the Doctor and Adric under his protection. As Kassia becomes increasingly influenced by Melkur, she begins to act against the interests of the Traken Union. The Consuls discuss the implications of the energy readings and decide to put Seron through a process called Rapport with the Source to test his integrity. The Doctor and Adric work together to understand the energy emissions and their connection to the Tardis. Ultimately, Kassia's corruption by Melkur leads to the downfall of the Consuls and the betrayal of the Keeper.

Act 1

The Doctor and Adric face immediate accusations of being 'creatures of Melkur' by Consul Kassia, who demands their execution. The Doctor skillfully delays, pointing out the Keeper's recent attack and the presence of a high-energy beam. Tremas, Kassia's husband, intervenes, using consular privilege to take the strangers under his protection, despite Kassia's strong objections and hinting at her growing obsession with the Melkur statue. The Doctor and Tremas begin to investigate mysterious energy readings found in the courtyard, which Tremas had already been studying. Meanwhile, the other Consuls, Seron, Katura, and Luvic, grow increasingly concerned about the hidden knowledge and the implications for the succession of the Keeper. Kassia, now aware of Tremas's investigation, attempts to undermine him by suggesting Tremas concealed knowledge. The Consuls decide to test Seron's integrity through a process called Rapport with the Source, a bioelectronic system crucial to the Traken Union. Kassia manipulates the situation further by volunteering to keep vigil during Seron's Rapport, positioning herself for future actions. This act establishes the initial conflict, introduces the central mystery of Melkur's influence, and sets the stage for a critical test of integrity and power within the Traken Union. The Doctor and Adric are vulnerable but find an ally in Tremas, while Kassia's sinister connection to Melkur deepens, foreshadowing betrayal.

Act 2

Melkur, now revealed to be a sentient, malevolent entity, directly manipulates Kassia, giving her a glowing allegiance band and instructing her to be his 'eyes and ears,' while dismissing the importance of the Keepers and Tremas's succession. Adric, working with Nyssa in Tremas's quarters, performs a Fourier analysis on the energy readings, concluding they originate from a highly advanced, impossible Tardis-like generator, a discovery he urgently needs to share with the Doctor. The Doctor and Tremas, attempting to locate the Doctor's Tardis, discover it has been displaced by a time cone and begin constructing a binary induction system in the vault beneath the Keeper's chamber to retrieve it. As Seron prepares for Rapport, Nyssa attempts to clear the grove of superstitious citizens, demonstrating her authority and revealing Adric's location. Adric then slips into the grove to find the Doctor, revealing his critical findings about the energy emissions. During Seron's Rapport with the Source, the Keeper declares him 'blameless, but doomed,' and reveals a betrayal. Kassia, now fully under Melkur's influence, her eyes and collar glowing red, murders Seron with energy bolts. She then frames the Doctor and Adric for Seron's death, accusing them as Melkur's agents. Tremas, horrified, confronts Kassia, but she remains bound to Melkur. The Fosters pursue the Doctor, Adric, and Tremas, forcing them to retreat into the vault, where they are temporarily trapped but possess the newly constructed backflow inducer, a critical piece of equipment for their escape and understanding of the unfolding crisis.
