Earthshock Part 4

The Doctor and his companions must stop the Cybermen from crashing a freighter into Earth, which would destroy the planet and prevent a united military force from forming to fight against the Cyber race.

The Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa, Adric, and Lieutenant Scott find themselves on a freighter that has been taken over by Cybermen. The Cybermen plan to use the freighter as a bomb to destroy Earth, where a conference is about to take place to form a united military force against the Cyber race. The Doctor and his companions must navigate the ship, evade the Cybermen, and prevent the freighter from crashing into Earth. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including Cybermen patrols, logic puzzles, and time travel. Adric, a young companion, plays a crucial role in solving the logic puzzles and potentially saving the planet. Meanwhile, Nyssa is killed by a Cyberman, and the Doctor and his companions are forced to make difficult decisions to ensure their survival and the survival of the planet. Ultimately, the Doctor and Tegan manage to defeat the Cyberleader and prevent the freighter from crashing into Earth, but not before it travels back in time and potentially alters the course of history.

Act 1

Cybermen consolidate their control over the freighter, revealing their sinister objective: to crash the vessel into Earth. Their target is a crucial inter-planetary conference aiming to unite military forces against the Cyber race. The Doctor quickly deduces the Cybermen's intention to transform the freighter into a flying bomb, designed to destroy the planet and shatter the nascent alliance. As the companions attempt to navigate the ship and evade capture, Tegan becomes separated from Scott's remaining troopers. A desperate attempt by Scott and his team to reach the safety of the TARDIS results in tragedy when a Cyberman ambushes them at the door, killing Nyssa. This devastating loss underscores the immediate and brutal threat posed by the Cybermen. Tegan, subsequently captured, is brought to the bridge, where the Cyberleader uses her as a pawn to manipulate the Doctor. The Cyberleader reveals his intent to evacuate the ship, leaving the Doctor, Tegan, and Adric to perish with the freighter. Despite the Doctor's pleas, Adric is forcibly separated from his friends, remaining on the bridge with Captain Briggs and Lieutenant Berger, tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of disarming the Cyber device. The Cyberleader then takes the Doctor and Tegan to the TARDIS, intending to witness Earth's destruction from a safe distance, believing his victory assured and the Doctor powerless. This act establishes the high stakes, the enemy's clear objective, and the initial, tragic cost of the conflict.

Act 2

Left on the freighter bridge, Adric, Captain Briggs, and Lieutenant Berger frantically search for a way to disable the Cybermen's override system. Adric, leveraging his mathematical genius, discovers the solution lies in solving three complex logic codes embedded within the alien device. While Adric begins the arduous task, Scott and his remaining trooper attempt to create a diversion and hold back advancing Cybermen, providing precious time. Meanwhile, inside the TARDIS, Tegan's emotional distress over Earth's impending doom causes her to impulsively activate console controls, resulting in a violent lurch of the TARDIS. Adric successfully cracks the first logic code, causing a momentary shift in the freighter's trajectory. However, the true horror of the Cybermen's plan unfolds as the freighter suddenly jumps into a time warp, spiraling backwards through history. The Doctor, observing this on the TARDIS scanner, makes a chilling realization: the freighter, despite its temporal displacement, remains locked onto Earth's spatial coordinates. This means the vessel will still collide with Earth, but 65 million years in the past, irrevocably altering the planet's history and potentially causing the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. This revelation elevates the stakes beyond mere planetary destruction to the very fabric of time and history. Adric, undeterred, solves the second logic code. As the ship approaches Earth's gravitational pull, escape pods are deployed. Briggs and Scott urge Adric to abandon the doomed freighter, but Adric, driven by a profound sense of responsibility, refuses to leave, convinced he can still solve the final code and avert disaster, even jumping back onto the bridge after a brief evacuation attempt.

Act 3

Adric remains alone on the freighter bridge, desperately working against the clock to solve the final logic code as the ship hurtles towards Earth. His determination is palpable, a race against an inevitable collision. In the TARDIS, Scott's desperate communication from an escape pod confirms Adric's continued presence on the doomed freighter. The Cyberleader, enraged by the Doctor's defiance, crushes the communicator, severing any last hope of direct contact. The Doctor, seizing an opportunity, confronts the Cyberleader. Using Adric's gold star, he exploits a weakness in the Cyberleader's chest unit, causing it to malfunction and crumble. The Doctor then grabs the Cyberleader's weapon and fires repeatedly, destroying the Cyberleader in a violent explosion. However, this victory is immediately overshadowed by the TARDIS console's damage, rendering it unable to rescue Adric. On the freighter bridge, just as Adric nears a solution, the last surviving Cyberman staggers onto the bridge and fires, destroying the console and with it, Adric's final chance. Trapped and without recourse, Adric faces his fate. The freighter plummets through Earth's atmosphere, culminating in a massive explosion. The Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan watch in horror as the scanner screen goes blank, signifying Adric's ultimate sacrifice. The episode concludes with Nyssa and Tegan weeping, their grief profound, as the closing titles roll silently over an image of Adric's broken gold star, a poignant testament to his bravery and the high cost of saving history.
