The King's Demons Part 1

In 13th century England, King John, possibly under demonic influence, demands a large sum from Lord Ranulf, leading to a trial by combat and the arrival of time-traveling strangers who may hold the key to unraveling the mystery.

The screenplay 'The King's Demons - Part One' is set in 13th century England, during the reign of King John. The story begins with a feast at Lord Ranulf's hall, where King John demands three marks per knight's fee to support the Crusade. When Lord Ranulf claims he has already given his whole fortune to the King, the King's Champion, Sir Gilles, challenges Ranulf's son Hugh to a trial by combat.

Just as the trial is about to take place, a time-traveling trio - the Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough - arrive in a TARDIS, which materializes in the middle of the tournament field. The Doctor attempts to intervene in the trial by combat, suggesting that bloodshed is not necessary.

As the Doctor and his companions try to understand the situation, they discover that King John is acting strangely and that Sir Gilles seems to be exerting a malign influence over him. The Doctor suspects that the King may be an imposter and that something is amiss.

Meanwhile, Turlough is captured by Hugh and taken to the dungeon, while Isabella is taken into custody by Sir Gilles on the King's orders. The Doctor and Tegan try to navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries at court, while also attempting to find Turlough and prevent a catastrophe.

The screenplay explores themes of power, loyalty, and identity, as the characters navigate the treacherous world of medieval politics.

Act 1

The act opens with King John, acting uncharacteristically sullen and demanding, imposing a heavy tax on Lord Ranulf. Ranulf's protestations of poverty lead to a trial by combat between the King's Champion, Sir Gilles, and Ranulf's son, Hugh, establishing immediate conflict and high stakes. The arrival of the TARDIS during the combat introduces the Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough, who quickly become entangled in the court's politics. The Doctor observes King John's bizarre behavior, including his claim of welcoming "demons," and his historical actions not aligning with the current timeline. This leads the Doctor to suspect an imposter. The situation escalates with Turlough's capture by Hugh and Isabella's subsequent arrest by Sir Gilles, both imprisoned in the castle dungeon. The Doctor shares his "imposter" theory with Ranulf, who initially resists but is swayed by the Doctor's conviction and the King's uncharacteristic actions. This theory is dramatically reinforced by the arrival of Geoffrey de Lacy, Ranulf's cousin, who unequivocally states he left the *real* King John in London that very morning, thus confirming the presence of a royal deceiver at Fitzwilliam Castle. The act concludes with the Doctor and Tegan attempting to navigate the treacherous court while Turlough, Isabella, and Hugh remain captive, setting a clear objective for the Doctor to uncover the imposter's identity and purpose.
