Act 1

The narrative opens with immediate peril as Tegan uses a phosphor lamp to repel Tractators, freeing the Doctor and Norna from a forcefield. The Doctor urges Tegan to evacuate Norna while he confronts the creatures, giving Tegan his lamp. Simultaneously, on the surface, Brazen and his Orderlies emerge from the Medical Centre, imposing strict emergency discipline to counter widespread looting and insubordination, with a primary objective to locate the Doctor. Tegan, despite Norna and Range's warnings about the danger, insists on returning for the Doctor, prompting Range to follow her into the tunnels. The Doctor, resourceful, uses a giant globe as a projectile to momentarily scatter the returning Tractators. However, he and Tegan soon fall victim to a Tractator gravity beam, being dragged backward. Range, witnessing this, rushes off for help. During this chaos, Turlough, in a trance-like state, begins to articulate fragmented ancestral memories of the Tractators, describing them as an ancient, destructive 'infection' that plagued his home world. The Doctor, utilizing the lamp given to him by Tegan, strategically throws it to disrupt the gravity beam, allowing them to escape the immediate pull and stand free. This act establishes the immediate threat of the Tractators, the fractured leadership on the surface, and introduces Turlough's mysterious connection to the creatures, while the Doctor and Tegan navigate the initial dangers.

Act 2

Following their escape from the gravity beam, the narrative shifts to the escalating crisis on Frontios and deepening investigations. Brazen, back in the State Room, confronts Cockerill, who openly declares the colony's demise, hinting at Plantagenet's fate. Brazen, suspicious of Cockerill's 'common knowledge,' dismisses him, only for Cockerill to be attacked by looters and then tragically consumed by the earth, a chilling confirmation of the local myths. Meanwhile, Range and Norna discover Captain Revere's map in a cave, proving his prior knowledge of the tunnels and creatures, which Range connects to a long-standing 'conspiracy of silence' regarding mysterious disappearances. The Doctor and Tegan, exploring the tunnels, discover machined chippings, leading the Doctor to deduce the Tractators are highly intelligent beings constructing an extensive underground network with advanced technology. Concurrently, in the Tractator's lair, their leader Gravis reveals their grand plan to the captive Plantagenet: to expand and populate Frontios by using 'captive human minds' as drivers for their excavation machines. Plantagenet is their new, unwilling driver. Brazen, now more open to the truth, brings Range, Norna, and Turlough to the State Room. He interrogates Range about his secret medical records detailing unaccounted deaths. Turlough, still in a trance, further articulates that the Tractators 'need living flesh' and 'minds,' providing crucial insight into their methods. Brazen, confronted with the evidence and Turlough's revelations, finally accepts the horrifying reality of the Tractators' threat and their role in Plantagenet's disappearance.

Act 3

With the true nature of the Tractator threat now undeniable, Brazen shifts from maintaining order to launching a direct counter-offensive. He quickly organizes a strategic, hand-picked force for a below-ground sortie, intending to find Plantagenet and confront the creatures. Range, despite Brazen's initial reluctance for him to leave Norna, insists on joining the mission, highlighting the unreliability of Turlough's mental state underground. While preparations are underway, the Doctor and Tegan, still navigating the labyrinthine tunnels, detect the distinct whirring sound of the Tractators' excavating machine approaching their location, indicating an imminent encounter. Meanwhile, Turlough, wrestling with his internal conflict and the traumatic ancestral memories, undergoes a personal 'decision time' ritual with Norna. He chooses to join the dangerous underground expedition, driven by a sense of fate, despite his earlier reluctance and the potential risks to his fragile mental state. As Range, Brazen, and Turlough descend into the tunnels, a new, unseen threat emerges: two unidentified men are seen peering through a ventilation grill, suggesting further complications or an unseen enemy operating within the colony. The act concludes with the Doctor and Tegan bracing for a direct confrontation with the Tractator machine, while the newly formed ground team embarks on their perilous mission, setting the stage for the climax of the episode.
